NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
As there were false prophets in the past history of our people, so you too wil have your false teachers,who wil insinuate their own disruptive views and, by disowning the Lord who bought them freedom, wil bringupon themselves speedy destruction.1 Ci sono stati anche falsi profeti tra il popolo, come pure ci saranno in mezzo a voi falsi maestri che introdurranno eresie perniciose, rinnegando il Signore che li ha riscattati e attirandosi una pronta rovina.
Many wil copy their debauched behaviour, and the Way of Truth wil be brought into disrepute on theiraccount.2 Molti seguiranno le loro dissolutezze e per colpa loro la via della verità sarà coperta di impropèri.
In their greed they wil try to make a profit out of you with untrue tales. But the judgement made uponthem long ago is not idle, and the destruction awaiting them is for ever on the watch.3 Nella loro cupidigia vi sfrutteranno con parole false; ma la loro condanna è già da tempo all'opera e la loro rovina è in agguato.

When angels sinned, God did not spare them: he sent them down into the underworld and consignedthem to the dark abyss to be held there until the Judgement.4 Dio infatti non risparmiò gli angeli che avevano peccato, ma li precipitò negli abissi tenebrosi dell'inferno, serbandoli per il giudizio;
He did not spare the world in ancient times: he saved only Noah, the preacher of uprightness, alongwith seven others, when he sent the Flood over a world of sinners.5 non risparmiò il mondo antico, ma tuttavia con altri sette salvò Noè, banditore di giustizia, mentre faceva piombare il diluvio su un mondo di empi;
He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by reducing them to ashes as a warning to futuresinners;6 condannò alla distruzione le città di Sòdoma e Gomorra, riducendole in cenere, ponendo un esempio a quanti sarebbero vissuti empiamente.
but rescued Lot, an upright man who had been sickened by the debauched way in which these vilepeople behaved-7 Liberò invece il giusto Lot, angustiato dal comportamento immorale di quegli scellerati.
for that upright man, living among them, was outraged in his upright soul by the crimes that he saw andheard every day.8 Quel giusto infatti, per ciò che vedeva e udiva mentre abitava in mezzo a loro, si tormentava ogni giorno nella sua anima giusta per tali ignominie.
Al this shows that the Lord is well able to rescue the good from their trials, and hold the wicked for theirpunishment until the Day of Judgement,9 Il Signore sa liberare i pii dalla prova e serbare gli empi per il castigo nel giorno del giudizio,
especially those who follow the desires of their corrupt human nature and have no respect for theLord's authority. Such self-wil ed people with no reverence are not afraid of offending against the glorious ones,10 soprattutto coloro che nelle loro impure passioni vanno dietro alla carne e disprezzano il Signore.

Temerari, arroganti, non temono d'insultare gli esseri gloriosi decaduti,
but the angels in their greater strength and power make no complaint or accusation against them inthe Lord's presence.11 mentre gli angeli, a loro superiori per forza e potenza, non portano contro di essi alcun giudizio offensivo davanti al Signore.
But these people speak evil of what they do not understand; they are like brute beasts, born only to becaught and kil ed, and like beasts they wil be destroyed, being injured in return for the injuries they haveinflicted.12 Ma costoro, come animali irragionevoli nati per natura a essere presi e distrutti, mentre bestemmiano quel che ignorano, saranno distrutti nella loro corruzione,
Debauchery even by day they make their pleasure; they are unsightly blots, and amuse themselves bytheir trickery even when they are sharing your table;13 subendo il castigo come salario dell'iniquità. Essi stimano felicità il piacere d'un giorno; sono tutta sporcizia e vergogna; si dilettano dei loro inganni mentre fan festa con voi;
with their eyes always looking for adultery, people with an insatiable capacity for sinning, they wilseduce any but the most stable soul. Where greed is concerned they are at their peak of fitness. They are undera curse.14 han gli occhi pieni di disonesti desideri e sono insaziabili di peccato, adescano le anime instabili, hanno il cuore rotto alla cupidigia, figli di maledizione!
They have left the right path and wandered off to fol ow the path of Balaam son of Bosor, who set hisheart on a dishonest reward, but soon had his fault pointed out to him:15 Abbandonata la retta via, si sono smarriti seguendo la via di Balaàm di Bosòr, che amò un salario di iniquità,
a dumb beast of burden, speaking with a human voice, put a stop to the madness of the prophet.16 ma fu ripreso per la sua malvagità: un muto giumento, parlando con voce umana, impedì la demenza del profeta.
People like this are dried-up springs, fogs swirling in the wind, and the gloom of darkness is stored upfor them.17 Costoro sono come fonti senz'acqua e come nuvole sospinte dal vento: a loro è riserbata l'oscurità delle tenebre.
With their high-sounding but empty talk they tempt back people who have scarcely escaped fromthose who live in error, by playing on the disordered desires of their human nature and by debaucheries.18 Con discorsi gonfiati e vani adescano mediante le licenziose passioni della carne coloro che si erano appena allontanati da quelli che vivono nell'errore.
They may promise freedom but are themselves slaves to corruption; because if anyone lets himself bedominated by anything, then he is a slave to it;19 Promettono loro libertà, ma essi stessi sono schiavi della corruzione. Perché uno è schiavo di ciò che l'ha vinto.
and anyone who has escaped the pol ution of the world by coming to know our Lord and SaviourJesus Christ, and who then allows himself to be entangled and mastered by it a second time, ends up by beingworse than he was before.20 Se infatti, dopo aver fuggito le corruzioni del mondo per mezzo della conoscenza del Signore e salvatore Gesù Cristo, ne rimangono di nuovo invischiati e vinti, la loro ultima condizione è divenuta peggiore della prima.
It would have been better for them never to have learnt the way of uprightness, than to learn it andthen desert the holy commandment that was entrusted to them.21 Meglio sarebbe stato per loro non aver conosciuto la via della giustizia, piuttosto che, dopo averla conosciuta, voltar le spalle al santo precetto che era stato loro dato.
What they have done is exactly as the proverb rightly says: The dog goes back to its vomit and: Assoon as the sow has been washed, it wal ows in the mud.22 Si è verificato per essi il proverbio:

'Il cane è tornato al suo vomito'
e la scrofa lavata è tornata ad avvoltolarsi nel brago.
