NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
1 Rid yourselves, then, of al spite, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and carping criticism.1 Deposta dunque ogni malizia e ogni frode e ipocrisia, le gelosie e ogni maldicenza,
2 Like new-born babies al your longing should be for milk -- the unadulterated spiritual milk -- which willhelp you to grow up to salvation,2 come bambini appena nati bramate il puro latte spirituale, per crescere con esso verso la salvezza:
3 at any rate if you have tasted that the Lord is good .3 se davvero 'avete già gustato come è buono il Signore'.

4 He is the living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen by God and precious to him; set yourselvesclose to him4 Stringendovi a lui, pietra viva, rigettata dagli uomini, ma scelta e preziosa davanti a Dio,
5 so that you, too, may be living stones making a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer the spiritualsacrifices made acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.5 anche voi venite impiegati come pietre vive per la costruzione di un edificio spirituale, per un sacerdozio santo, per offrire sacrifici spirituali graditi a Dio, per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.
6 As scripture says: Now I am laying a stone in Zion, a chosen, precious cornerstone and no one whorelies on this wil be brought to disgrace.6 Si legge infatti nella Scrittura:

'Ecco io pongo in Sion
una pietra angolare, scelta, preziosa
e chi crede in essa non resterà confuso'.

7 To you believers it brings honour. But for unbelievers, it is rather a stone which the builders rejectedthat became a cornerstone,7 Onore dunque a voi che credete; ma per gli increduli

'la pietra che i costruttori hanno scartato
è divenuta la pietra angolare,'
8 a stumbling stone, a rock to trip people up. They stumble over it because they do not believe in theWord; it was the fate in store for them.8 'sasso d'inciampo e pietra di scandalo'.

Loro v'inciampano perché non credono alla parola; a questo sono stati destinati.
9 But you are a chosen race, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a people to be a personal possession tosing the praises of God who cal ed you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.9 Ma voi siete 'la stirpe eletta, il sacerdozio regale, la nazione santa, il popolo che Dio si è acquistato perché proclami le opere meravigliose' di lui che vi ha chiamato dalle tenebre alla sua ammirabile luce;
10 Once you were a non-people and now you are the People of God; once you were outside his pity; nowyou have received pity.10 voi, che un tempo eravate 'non popolo', ora invece siete 'il popolo di Dio; voi, un tempo esclusi dalla misericordia', ora invece 'avete ottenuto misericordia'.

11 I urge you, my dear friends, as strangers and nomads, to keep yourselves free from the disorderednatural inclinations that attack the soul.11 Carissimi, io vi esorto come stranieri e pellegrini ad astenervi dai desideri della carne che fanno guerra all'anima.
12 Always behave honourably among gentiles so that they can see for themselves what moral lives youlead, and when the day of reckoning comes, give thanks to God for the things which now make them denounceyou as criminals.12 La vostra condotta tra i pagani sia irreprensibile, perché mentre vi calunniano come malfattori, al vedere le vostre buone opere giungano a glorificare Dio nel giorno del giudizio.

13 For the sake of the Lord, accept the authority of every human institution: the emperor, as the supremeauthority,13 State sottomessi ad ogni istituzione umana per amore del Signore: sia al re come sovrano,
14 and the governors as commissioned by him to punish criminals and praise those who do good.14 sia ai governatori come ai suoi inviati per punire i malfattori e premiare i buoni.
15 It is God's will that by your good deeds you should silence the ignorant talk of fools.15 Perché questa è la volontà di Dio: che, operando il bene, voi chiudiate la bocca all'ignoranza degli stolti.
16 You are slaves of no one except God, so behave like free people, and never use your freedom as acover for wickedness.16 Comportatevi come uomini liberi, non servendovi della libertà come di un velo per coprire la malizia, ma come servitori di Dio.
17 Have respect for everyone and love for your fel ow-believers; fear God and honour the emperor.17 Onorate tutti, amate i vostri fratelli, temete Dio, onorate il re.

18 Slaves, you should obey your masters respectful y, not only those who are kind and reasonable butalso those who are difficult to please.18 Domestici, state soggetti con profondo rispetto ai vostri padroni, non solo a quelli buoni e miti, ma anche a quelli difficili.
19 You see, there is merit if, in awareness of God, you put up with the pains of undeserved punishment;19 È una grazia per chi conosce Dio subire afflizioni, soffrendo ingiustamente;
20 but what glory is there in putting up with a beating after you have done something wrong? The merit inthe sight of God is in putting up with it patiently when you are punished for doing your duty.20 che gloria sarebbe infatti sopportare il castigo se avete mancato? Ma se facendo il bene sopporterete con pazienza la sofferenza, ciò sarà gradito davanti a Dio.
21 This, in fact, is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you and left an example for youto fol ow in his steps.21 A questo infatti siete stati chiamati, poiché

anche Cristo patì per voi,
lasciandovi un esempio, perché ne seguiate le orme:
22 He had done nothing wrong, and had spoken no deceit.22 egli 'non commise peccato'
e 'non si trovò inganno sulla sua bocca',
23 He was insulted and did not retaliate with insults; when he was suffering he made no threats but puthis trust in the upright judge.23 oltraggiato non rispondeva con oltraggi,
e soffrendo non minacciava vendetta,
ma rimetteva la sua causa a colui che giudica con giustizia.
24 He was bearing our sins in his own body on the cross, so that we might die to our sins and live foruprightness; through his bruises you have been healed.24 'Egli' portò i nostri 'peccati' nel suo corpo
sul legno della croce,
perché, non vivendo più per il peccato,
vivessimo per la giustizia;
25 You had gone astray like sheep but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of yoursouls.25 'dalle' sue 'piaghe siete stati guariti'.
Eravate 'erranti come pecore',
ma ora siete tornati al pastore
e guardiano delle vostre anime.
