NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
The first covenant also had its laws governing worship and its sanctuary, a sanctuary on this earth.1 Certo, anche la prima alleanza aveva norme per il culto e un santuario terreno.
There was a tent which comprised two compartments: the first, in which the lamp-stand, the table andthe loaves of permanent offering were kept, was cal ed the Holy Place;2 Fu costruita infatti una Tenda: la prima, nella quale vi erano il candelabro, la tavola e i pani dell'offerta: essa veniva chiamata il Santo.
then beyond the second veil, a second compartment which was called the Holy of Holies3 Dietro il secondo velo poi c'era una Tenda, detta Santo dei Santi, con
to which belonged the gold altar of incense, and the ark of the covenant, plated al over with gold. Inthis were kept the gold jar containing the manna, Aaron's branch that grew the buds, and the tables of thecovenant.4 l'altare d'oro per i profumi e l'arca dell'alleanza tutta ricoperta d'oro, nella quale si trovavano un'urna d'oro contenente la manna, la verga di Aronne che aveva fiorito e le tavole dell'alleanza.
On top of it were the glorious winged creatures, overshadowing the throne of mercy. This is not the timeto go into detail about this.5 E sopra l'arca stavano i cherubini della gloria, che facevano ombra al luogo dell'espiazione. Di tutte queste cose non è necessario ora parlare nei particolari.
Under these provisions, priests go regularly into the outer tent to carry out their acts of worship,6 Disposte in tal modo le cose, nella prima Tenda entrano sempre i sacerdoti per celebrarvi il culto;
but the second tent is entered only once a year, and then only by the high priest who takes in the bloodto make an offering for his own and the people's faults of inadvertence.7 nella seconda invece solamente il sommo sacerdote, una volta all'anno, e non senza portarvi del sangue, che egli offre per se stesso e per i peccati involontari del popolo.
By this, the Holy Spirit means us to see that as long as the old tent stands, the way into the holy placeis not opened up;8 Lo Spirito Santo intendeva così mostrare che non era ancora aperta la via del santuario, finché sussisteva la prima Tenda.
it is a symbol for this present time. None of the gifts and sacrifices offered under these regulations canpossibly bring any worshipper to perfection in his conscience;9 Essa infatti è una figura per il tempo attuale, offrendosi sotto di essa doni e sacrifici che non possono rendere perfetto, nella sua coscienza, l'offerente,
they are rules about outward life, connected with food and drink and washing at various times, whichare in force only until the time comes to set things right.10 trattandosi solo di cibi, di bevande e di varie abluzioni, tutte prescrizioni umane, valide fino al tempo in cui sarebbero state riformate.
But now Christ has come, as the high priest of al the blessings which were to come. He has passedthrough the greater, the more perfect tent, not made by human hands, that is, not of this created order;11 Cristo invece, venuto come sommo sacerdote di beni futuri, attraverso una Tenda più grande e più perfetta, non costruita da mano di uomo, cioè non appartenente a questa creazione,
and he has entered the sanctuary once and for all, taking with him not the blood of goats and bulcalves, but his own blood, having won an eternal redemption.12 non con sangue di capri e di vitelli, ma con il proprio sangue entrò una volta per sempre nel santuario, procurandoci così una redenzione eterna.
The blood of goats and bul s and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkled on those who have incurreddefilement, may restore their bodily purity.13 Infatti, se il sangue dei capri e dei vitelli e la cenere di una giovenca, sparsi su quelli che sono contaminati, li santificano, purificandoli nella carne,
How much more wil the blood of Christ, who offered himself, blameless as he was, to God throughthe eternal Spirit, purify our conscience from dead actions so that we can worship the living God.14 quanto più il sangue di Cristo, che con uno Spirito eterno offrì se stesso senza macchia a Dio, purificherà la nostra coscienza dalla opere morte, per servire il Dio vivente?

This makes him the mediator of a new covenant, so that, now that a death has occurred to redeem thesins committed under an earlier covenant, those who have been cal ed to an eternal inheritance may receive thepromise.15 Per questo egli è mediatore di una nuova alleanza, perché, essendo ormai intervenuta la sua morte per la rendenzione delle colpe commesse sotto la prima alleanza, coloro che sono stati chiamati ricevano l'eredità eterna che è stata promessa.
Now wherever a wil is in question, the death of the testator must be established;16 Dove infatti c'è un testamento, è necessario che sia accertata la morte del testatore,
a testament comes into effect only after a death, since it has no force while the testator is stil alive.17 perché un testamento ha valore solo dopo la morte e rimane senza effetto finché il testatore vive.
That is why even the earlier covenant was inaugurated with blood,18 Per questo neanche la prima alleanza fu inaugurata senza sangue.
and why, after Moses had promulgated al the commandments of the Law to the people, he took thecalves' blood, the goats' blood and some water, and with these he sprinkled the book itself and all the people, using scarlet wool and hyssop;19 Infatti dopo che tutti i comandamenti furono promulgati a tutto il popolo da Mosè, secondo la legge, questi, preso il sangue dei vitelli e dei capri con acqua, lana scarlatta e issòpo, ne asperse il libro stesso e tutto il popolo,
saying as he did so: This is the blood of the covenant that God has made with you.20 dicendo: 'Questo è il sangue dell'alleanza che Dio ha stabilito per voi'.
And he sprinkled both the tent and all the liturgical vessels with blood in the same way.21 Alla stessa maniera asperse con il sangue anche la Tenda e tutti gli arredi del culto.
In fact, according to the Law, practical y every purification takes place by means of blood; and if thereis no shedding of blood, there is no remission.22 Secondo la legge, infatti, quasi tutte le cose vengono purificate con il sangue e senza spargimento di sangue non esiste perdono.
Only the copies of heavenly things are purified in this way; the heavenly things themselves have to bepurified by a higher sort of sacrifice than this.23 Era dunque necessario che i simboli delle realtà celesti fossero purificati con tali mezzi; le realtà celesti poi dovevano esserlo con sacrifici superiori a questi.
It is not as though Christ had entered a man-made sanctuary which was merely a model of the realone; he entered heaven itself, so that he now appears in the presence of God on our behalf.24 Cristo infatti non è entrato in un santuario fatto da mani d'uomo, figura di quello vero, ma nel cielo stesso, per comparire ora al cospetto di Dio in nostro favore,
And he does not have to offer himself again and again, as the high priest goes into the sanctuary yearafter year with the blood that is not his own,25 e non per offrire se stesso più volte, come il sommo sacerdote che entra nel santuario ogni anno con sangue altrui.
or else he would have had to suffer over and over again since the world began. As it is, he has madehis appearance once and for al , at the end of the last age, to do away with sin by sacrificing himself.26 In questo caso, infatti, avrebbe dovuto soffrire più volte dalla fondazione del mondo.
so Christ too, having offered himself only once to bear the sin of many, will manifest himself a secondtime, sin being no more, to those who are waiting for him, to bring them salvation.28 così Cristo, dopo essersi offerto una volta per tutte allo scopo di togliere i peccati di molti, apparirà una seconda volta, senza alcuna relazione col peccato, a coloro che l'aspettano per la loro salvezza.
