NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Next, brothers, we will tel you of the grace of God which has been granted to the churches ofMacedonia,1 Vogliamo poi farvi nota, fratelli, la grazia di Dio concessa alle Chiese della Macedonia:
and how, throughout continual ordeals of hardship, their unfailing joy and their intense poverty haveoverflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.2 nonostante la lunga prova della tribolazione, la loro grande gioia e la loro estrema povertà si sono tramutate nella ricchezza della loro generosità.
I can testify that it was of their own accord that they made their gift, which was not merely as far as theirresources would al ow, but wel beyond their resources;3 Posso testimoniare infatti che hanno dato secondo i loro mezzi e anche al di là dei loro mezzi, spontaneamente,
and they had kept imploring us most insistently for the privilege of a share in the fellowship of service toGod's holy people-4 domandandoci con insistenza la grazia di prendere parte a questo servizio a favore dei santi.
it was not something that we expected of them, but it began by their offering themselves to the Lordand to us at the prompting of the wil of God.5 Superando anzi le nostre stesse speranze, si sono offerti prima di tutto al Signore e poi a noi, secondo la volontà di Dio;
In the end we urged Titus, since he had already made a beginning, also to bring this work of generosityto completion among you.6 cosicché abbiamo pregato Tito di portare a compimento fra voi quest'opera generosa, dato che lui stesso l'aveva incominciata.
More, as you are rich in everything-faith, eloquence, understanding, concern for everything, and lovefor us too -- then make sure that you excel in this work of generosity too.7 E come vi segnalate in ogni cosa, nella fede, nella parola, nella scienza, in ogni zelo e nella carità che vi abbiamo insegnato, così distinguetevi anche in quest'opera generosa.
I am not saying this as an order, but testing the genuineness of your love against the concern of others.8 Non dico questo per farvene un comando, ma solo per mettere alla prova la sincerità del vostro amore con la premura verso gli altri.
You are wel aware of the generosity which our Lord Jesus Christ had, that, although he was rich, hebecame poor for your sake, so that you should become rich through his poverty.9 Conoscete infatti la grazia del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo: da ricco che era, si è fatto povero per voi, perché voi diventaste ricchi per mezzo della sua povertà.
I will give you my considered opinion in the matter; this wil be the right course for you as you were thefirst, a year ago, not only to take any action but also even to conceive the project.10 E a questo riguardo vi do un consiglio: si tratta di cosa vantaggiosa per voi, che fin dall'anno passato siete stati i primi, non solo a intraprenderla ma a desiderarla.
Now, then, complete the action as wel , so that the fulfilment may -- so far as your resources permit --be proportionate to your enthusiasm for the project.11 Ora dunque realizzatela, perché come vi fu la prontezza del volere, così anche vi sia il compimento, secondo i vostri mezzi.
As long as the enthusiasm is there, the basis on which it is acceptable is what someone has, not whatsomeone does not have.12 Se infatti c'è la buona volontà, essa riesce gradita secondo quello che uno possiede e non secondo quello che non possiede.
It is not that you ought to relieve other people's needs and leave yourselves in hardship; but thereshould be a fair balance-13 Qui non si tratta infatti di mettere in ristrettezza voi per sollevare gli altri, ma di fare uguaglianza.
your surplus at present may fil their deficit, and another time their surplus may fil your deficit. Sothere may be a fair balance;14 Per il momento la vostra abbondanza supplisca alla loro indigenza, perché anche la loro abbondanza supplisca alla vostra indigenza, e vi sia uguaglianza, come sta scritto:

as scripture says: No one who had collected more had too much, no one who col ected less had toolittle.15 'Colui che raccolse molto non abbondò,
e colui che raccolse poco non ebbe di meno'.

Thank God for putting into Titus' heart the same sincere concern for you.16 Siano pertanto rese grazie a Dio che infonde la medesima sollecitudine per voi nel cuore di Tito!
He certainly took our urging to heart; but greater still was his own enthusiasm, and he went off to youof his own accord.17 Egli infatti ha accolto il mio invito e ancor più pieno di zelo è partito spontaneamente per venire da voi.
We have sent with him the brother who is praised as an evangelist in al the churches18 Con lui abbiamo inviato pure il fratello che ha lode in tutte le Chiese a motivo del vangelo;
and who, what is more, was elected by the churches to be our travel ing companion in this work ofgenerosity, a work to be administered by us for the glory of the Lord and our complete satisfaction.19 egli è stato designato dalle Chiese come nostro compagno in quest'opera di carità, alla quale ci dedichiamo per la gloria del Signore, e per dimostrare anche l'impulso del nostro cuore.
We arranged it this way so that no one should be able to make any accusation against us about thislarge sum we are administering.20 Con ciò intendiamo evitare che qualcuno possa biasimarci per questa abbondanza che viene da noi amministrata.
And so we have been careful to do right not only in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of people.21 'Ci preoccupiamo' infatti 'di comportarci bene' non soltanto 'davanti al Signore', ma 'anche' davanti 'agli uomini'.
Along with these, we have sent a brother of ours whose eagerness we have tested over and overagain in many ways and who is now all the more eager because he has so much faith in you.22 Con loro abbiamo inviato anche il nostro fratello, di cui abbiamo più volte sperimentato lo zelo in molte circostanze; egli è ora più zelante che mai per la grande fiducia che ha in voi.
If Titus is in question -- he is my own partner and fellow-worker in your interests; and if our brothers --they are the emissaries of the churches and the glory of Christ.23 Quanto a Tito, egli è mio compagno e collaboratore presso di voi; quanto ai nostri fratelli, essi sono delegati delle Chiese e gloria di Cristo.
So then, in full view of al the churches, give proof that you love them, and that we were right to boastof you to them.24 Date dunque a loro la prova del vostro affetto e della legittimità del nostro vanto per voi davanti a tutte le Chiese.
