Paul, by the wil of God an apostle of Christ Jesus, and Timothy, our brother, to the church of God inCorinth and to al God's holy people in the whole of Achaia.1 Paolo, apostolo di Gesù Cristo per volontà di Dio, e il fratello Timòteo, alla chiesa di Dio che è in Corinto e a tutti i santi dell'intera Acaia:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.2 grazia a voi e pace da Dio Padre nostro e dal Signore Gesù Cristo.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merciful Father and the God who givesevery possible encouragement;3 Sia benedetto Dio, Padre del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo, Padre misericordioso e Dio di ogni consolazione,
he supports us in every hardship, so that we are able to come to the support of others, in everyhardship of theirs because of the encouragement that we ourselves receive from God.4 il quale ci consola in ogni nostra tribolazione perché possiamo anche noi consolare quelli che si trovano in qualsiasi genere di afflizione con la consolazione con cui siamo consolati noi stessi da Dio.
For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow into our lives; so too does the encouragement we receive through Christ.5 Infatti, come abbondano le sofferenze di Cristo in noi, così, per mezzo di Cristo, abbonda anche la nostra consolazione.
So if we have hardships to undergo, this wil contribute to your encouragement and your salvation; if wereceive encouragement, this is to gain for you the encouragement which enables you to bear with perseverancethe same sufferings as we do.6 Quando siamo tribolati, è per la vostra consolazione e salvezza; quando siamo confortati, è per la vostra consolazione, la quale si dimostra nel sopportare con forza le medesime sofferenze che anche noi sopportiamo.
So our hope for you is secure in the knowledge that you share the encouragement we receive, no lessthan the sufferings we bear.7 La nostra speranza nei vostri riguardi è ben salda, convinti che come siete partecipi delle sofferenze così lo siete anche della consolazione.
So in the hardships we underwent in Asia, we want you to be quite certain, brothers, that we wereunder extraordinary pressure, beyond our powers of endurance, so that we gave up al hope even of surviving.8 Non vogliamo infatti che ignoriate, fratelli, come la tribolazione che ci è capitata in Asia ci ha colpiti oltre misura, al di là delle nostre forze, sì da dubitare anche della vita.
In fact we were carrying the sentence of death within our own selves, so that we should be forced totrust not in ourselves but in God, who raises the dead.9 Abbiamo addirittura ricevuto su di noi la sentenza di morte per imparare a non riporre fiducia in noi stessi, ma nel Dio che risuscita i morti.
He did save us from such a death and will save us -- we are relying on him to do so.10 Da quella morte però egli ci ha liberato e ci libererà, per la speranza che abbiamo riposto in lui, che ci libererà ancora,
Your prayer for us wil contribute to this, so that, for God's favour shown to us as the result of theprayers of so many, thanks too may be given by many on our behalf.11 grazie alla vostra cooperazione nella preghiera per noi, affinché, per il favore divino ottenutoci da molte persone, siano rese grazie per noi da parte di molti.

There is one thing that we are proud of, namely our conscientious conviction that we have alwaysbehaved towards everyone, and especial y towards you, with that unal oyed holiness that comes from God,relying not on human reasoning but on the grace of God.12 Questo infatti è il nostro vanto: la testimonianza della coscienza di esserci comportati nel mondo, e particolarmente verso di voi, con la santità e sincerità che vengono da Dio, non con la sapienza della carne ma con la grazia di Dio.
In our writing, there is nothing that you cannot read clearly and understand;13 Non vi scriviamo in maniera diversa da quello che potete leggere o comprendere; spero che comprenderete sino alla fine,
and it is my hope that, just as you have already understood us partial y, so you wil understand fullythat you can be as proud of us as we shal be of you when the Day of our Lord Jesus comes.14 come ci avete già compresi in parte, che noi siamo il vostro vanto, come voi sarete il nostro, nel giorno del Signore nostro Gesù.

It was with this assurance that I had been meaning to come to you first, so that you would benefitdoubly;15 Con questa convinzione avevo deciso in un primo tempo di venire da voi, perché riceveste una seconda grazia,
both to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and then to return to you again from Macedonia, so thatyou could set me on my way to Judaea.16 e da voi passare in Macedonia, per ritornare nuovamente dalla Macedonia in mezzo a voi ed avere da voi il commiato per la Giudea.
Since that was my purpose, do you think I lightly changed my mind? Or that my plans are based onordinary human promptings and I have in my mind Yes, yes at the same time as No, no?17 Forse in questo progetto mi sono comportato con leggerezza? O quello che decido lo decido secondo la carne, in maniera da dire allo stesso tempo "sì, sì" e "no, no"?
As surely as God is trustworthy, what we say to you is not both Yes and No.18 Dio è testimone che la nostra parola verso di voi non è "sì" e "no".
The Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed to you by us, that is, by me and by Silvanus andTimothy, was never Yes-and-No; his nature is al Yes.19 Il Figlio di Dio, Gesù Cristo che abbiamo predicato tra voi, io, Silvano e Timoteo, non fu "sì" e "no", ma in lui c'è stato il "sì".
For in him is found the Yes to al God's promises and therefore it is 'through him' that we answer'Amen' to give praise to God.20 E in realtà tutte le promesse di Dio in lui sono divenute "sì". Per questo sempre attraverso lui sale a Dio il nostro "Amen" per la sua gloria.
It is God who gives us, with you, a sure place in Christ21 È Dio stesso che ci conferma, insieme a voi, in Cristo, e ci ha conferito l'unzione,
and has both anointed us and marked us with his seal, giving us as pledge the Spirit in our hearts.22 ci ha impresso il sigillo e ci ha dato la caparra dello Spirito nei nostri cuori.
By my life I cal on God to be my witness that it was only to spare you that I did not come to Corinthagain.23 Io chiamo Dio a testimone sulla mia vita, che solo per risparmiarvi non sono più venuto a Corinto.
We have no wish to lord it over your faith, but to work with you for your joy; for your stand in the faith isfirm.24 Noi non intendiamo far da padroni sulla vostra fede; siamo invece i collaboratori della vostra gioia, perché nella fede voi siete già saldi.
