1 When it had been decided that we should sail to Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handedover to a centurion cal ed Julius, of the Augustan cohort.	1 Quando fu deciso che ci imbarcassimo per l'Italia, consegnarono Paolo, insieme ad alcuni altri prigionieri, a un centurione di nome Giulio della coorte Augusta.
2 We boarded a vessel from Adramyttium bound for ports on the Asiatic coast and put to sea; we hadAristarchus with us, a Macedonian of Thessalonica.	2 Salimmo su una nave di Adramitto, che stava per partire verso i porti della provincia d'Asia e salpammo, avendo con noi Aristarco, un Macèdone di Tessalonica.
3 Next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius was considerate enough to al ow Paul to go to his friends to belooked after.	3 Il giorno dopo facemmo scalo a Sidone e Giulio, con gesto cortese verso Paolo, gli permise di recarsi dagli amici e di riceverne le cure.
4 From there we put to sea again, but as the winds were against us we sailed under the lee of Cyprus,	4 Salpati di là, navigammo al riparo di Cipro a motivo dei venti contrari
5 then across the open sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia, taking a fortnight to reach Myra in Lycia.	5 e, attraversato il mare della Cilicia e della Panfilia, giungemmo a Mira di Licia.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship leaving for Italy and put us aboard.	6 Qui il centurione trovò una nave di Alessandria in partenza per l'Italia e ci fece salire a bordo.
7 For some days we made little headway, and we had difficulty in making Cnidus. The wind would notal ow us to touch there, so we sailed under the lee of Crete off Cape Salmone	7 Navigammo lentamente parecchi giorni, giungendo a fatica all'altezza di Cnido. Poi, siccome il vento non ci permetteva di approdare, prendemmo a navigare al riparo di Creta, dalle parti di Salmóne,
8 and struggled along the coast until we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.	8 e costeggiandola a fatica giungemmo in una località chiamata Buoni Porti, vicino alla quale era la città di Lasèa.
9 A great deal of time had been lost, and navigation was already hazardous, since it was now wel afterthe time of the Fast, so Paul gave them this warning,	9 Essendo trascorso molto tempo ed essendo ormai pericolosa la navigazione poiché era già passata la festa dell'Espiazione, Paolo li ammoniva dicendo:
10 'Friends, I can see this voyage will be dangerous and that we wil run considerable risk of losing notonly the cargo and the ship but also our lives as well.'	10 "Vedo, o uomini, che la navigazione comincia a essere di gran rischio e di molto danno non solo per il carico e per la nave, ma anche per le nostre vite".
11 But the centurion took more notice of the captain and the ship's owner than of what Paul was saying;	11 Il centurione però dava più ascolto al pilota e al capitano della nave che alle parole di Paolo.
12 and since the harbour was unsuitable for wintering, the majority were for putting out from there in thehope of wintering at Phoenix -- a harbour in Crete, facing south-west and north-west.	12 E poiché quel porto era poco adatto a trascorrervi l'inverno, i più furono del parere di salpare di là nella speranza di andare a svernare a Fenice, un porto di Creta esposto a libeccio e a maestrale.
13 A southerly breeze sprang up and, thinking their objective as good as reached, they weighed anchorand began to sail past Crete, close inshore.	13 Appena cominciò a soffiare un leggero scirocco, convinti di potere ormai realizzare il progetto, levarono le ancore e costeggiavano da vicino Creta.
14 But it was not long before a hurricane, the 'north-easter' as they cal it, burst on them from across theisland.	14 Ma dopo non molto tempo si scatenò contro l'isola un vento d'uragano, detto allora "Euroaquilone".
15 The ship was caught and could not keep head to wind, so we had to give way to the wind and letourselves be driven.	15 La nave fu travolta nel turbine e, non potendo più resistere al vento, abbandonati in sua balìa, andavamo alla deriva.
16 We ran under the lee of a smal island called Cauda and managed with some difficulty to bring theship's boat under control.	16 Mentre passavamo sotto un isolotto chiamato Càudas, a fatica riuscimmo a padroneggiare la scialuppa;
17 Having hauled it up they used it to undergird the ship; then, afraid of running aground on the Syrtisbanks, they floated out the sea-anchor and so let themselves drift.	17 la tirarono a bordo e adoperarono gli attrezzi per fasciare di gòmene la nave. Quindi, per timore di finire incagliati nelle Sirti, calarono il galleggiante e si andava così alla deriva.
18 As we were thoroughly storm-bound, the next day they began to jettison the cargo,	18 Sbattuti violentemente dalla tempesta, il giorno seguente cominciarono a gettare a mare il carico;
19 and the third day they threw the ship's gear overboard with their own hands.	19 il terzo giorno con le proprie mani buttarono via l'attrezzatura della nave.
20 For a number of days both the sun and the stars were invisible and the storm raged unabated until atlast we gave up al hope of surviving.	20 Da vari giorni non comparivano più né sole, né stelle e la violenta tempesta continuava a infuriare, per cui ogni speranza di salvarci sembrava ormai perduta.
21 Then, when they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among the men. 'Friends,' hesaid, 'you should have listened to me and not put out from Crete. You would have spared yourselves al thisdamage and loss.	21 Da molto tempo non si mangiava, quando Paolo, alzatosi in mezzo a loro, disse: "Sarebbe stato bene, o uomini, dar retta a me e non salpare da Creta; avreste evitato questo pericolo e questo danno.
22 But now I ask you not to give way to despair. There wil be no loss of life at al , only of the ship.	22 Tuttavia ora vi esorto a non perdervi di coraggio, perché non ci sarà alcuna perdita di vite in mezzo a voi, ma solo della nave.
23 Last night there appeared beside me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,	23 Mi è apparso infatti questa notte un angelo del Dio al quale appartengo e che servo,
24 and he said, "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to appear before Caesar, and God grants youthe safety of al who are sailing with you."	24 dicendomi: Non temere, Paolo; tu devi comparire davanti a Cesare ed ecco, Dio ti ha fatto grazia di tutti i tuoi compagni di navigazione.
25 So take courage, friends; I trust in God that things will turn out just as I was told;	25 Perciò non perdetevi di coraggio, uomini; ho fiducia in Dio che avverrà come mi è stato annunziato.
26 but we are to be stranded on some island.'	26 Ma è inevitabile che andiamo a finire su qualche isola".
27 On the fourteenth night we were being driven one way and another in the Adriatic, when aboutmidnight the crew sensed that land of some sort was near.	27 Come giunse la quattordicesima notte da quando andavamo alla deriva nell'Adriatico, verso mezzanotte i marinai ebbero l'impressione che una qualche terra si avvicinava.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; after a short interval they sounded again and foundfifteen fathoms.	28 Gettato lo scandaglio, trovarono venti braccia; dopo un breve intervallo, scandagliando di nuovo, trovarono quindici braccia.
29 Then, afraid that we might run aground somewhere on a reef, they dropped four anchors from thestern and prayed for daylight.	29 Nel timore di finire contro gli scogli, gettarono da poppa quattro ancore, aspettando con ansia che spuntasse il giorno.
30 When the crew tried to escape from the ship and lowered the ship's boat into the sea as though theymeant to lay out anchors from the bows, Paul said to the centurion and his men,	30 Ma poiché i marinai cercavano di fuggire dalla nave e già stavano calando la scialuppa in mare, col pretesto di gettare le ancore da prora, Paolo disse al centurione e ai soldati:
31 'Unless those men stay on board you cannot hope to be saved.'	31 "Se costoro non rimangono sulla nave, voi non potrete mettervi in salvo".
32 So the soldiers cut the boat's ropes and let it drop away.	32 Allora i soldati recisero le gòmene della scialuppa e la lasciarono cadere in mare.
33 Just before daybreak Paul urged them al to have something to eat. 'For fourteen days', he said, 'youhave been in suspense, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 Finché non spuntò il giorno, Paolo esortava tutti a prendere cibo: "Oggi è il quattordicesimo giorno che passate digiuni nell'attesa, senza prender nulla.
34 I urge you to have something to eat; your safety depends on it. Not a hair of any of your heads wil belost.'	34 Per questo vi esorto a prender cibo; è necessario per la vostra salvezza. Neanche un capello del vostro capo andrà perduto".
35 With these words he took some bread, gave thanks to God in view of them al , broke it and began toeat.	35 Ciò detto, prese il pane, rese grazie a Dio davanti a tutti, lo spezzò e cominciò a mangiare.
36 They al plucked up courage and took something to eat themselves.	36 Tutti si sentirono rianimati, e anch'essi presero cibo.
37 In al we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on board that ship.	37 Eravamo complessivamente sulla nave duecentosettantasei persone.
38 When they had eaten what they wanted they lightened the ship by throwing the corn overboard intothe sea.	38 Quando si furono rifocillati, alleggerirono la nave, gettando il frumento in mare.
39 When day came they did not recognise the land, but they could make out a bay with a beach; theyplanned to run the ship aground on this if they could.	39 Fattosi giorno non riuscivano a riconoscere quella terra, ma notarono un'insenatura con spiaggia e decisero, se possibile, di spingere la nave verso di essa.
40 They slipped the anchors and let them fal into the sea, and at the same time loosened the lashings ofthe rudders; then, hoisting the foresail to the wind, they headed for the beach.	40 Levarono le ancore e le lasciarono andare in mare; al tempo stesso allentarono i legami dei timoni e spiegata al vento la vela maestra, mossero verso la spiaggia.
41 But the cross-currents carried them into a shoal and the vessel ran aground. The bows were wedgedin and stuck fast, while the stern began to break up with the pounding of the waves.	41 Ma incapparono in una secca e la nave vi si incagliò; mentre la prua arenata rimaneva immobile, la poppa minacciava di sfasciarsi sotto la violenza delle onde.
42 The soldiers planned to kil the prisoners for fear that any should swim off and escape.	42 I soldati pensarono allora di uccidere i prigionieri, perché nessuno sfuggisse gettandosi a nuoto,
43 But the centurion was determined to bring Paul safely through and would not let them carry out theirplan. He gave orders that those who could swim should jump overboard first and so get ashore,	43 ma il centurione, volendo salvare Paolo, impedì loro di attuare questo progetto; diede ordine che si gettassero per primi quelli che sapevano nuotare e raggiunsero la terra;
44 and the rest fol ow either on planks or on pieces of wreckage. In this way it happened that al camesafe and sound to land.	44 poi gli altri, chi su tavole, chi su altri rottami della nave. E così tutti poterono mettersi in salvo a terra.
