NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.1 Gesù si avviò allora verso il monte degli Ulivi.
At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as al the people came to him, he sat down andbegan to teach them.2 Ma all'alba si recò di nuovo nel tempio e tutto il popolo andava da lui ed egli, sedutosi, li ammaestrava.
The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; andmaking her stand there in the middle3 Allora gli scribi e i farisei gli conducono una donna sorpresa in adulterio e, postala nel mezzo,
they said to Jesus, 'Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery,4 gli dicono: "Maestro, questa donna è stata sorpresa in flagrante adulterio.
and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?'5 Ora Mosè, nella Legge, ci ha comandato di lapidare donne come questa. Tu che ne dici?".
They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down andstarted writing on the ground with his finger.6 Questo dicevano per metterlo alla prova e per avere di che accusarlo.
As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, 'Let the one among you who isguiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.'7 E siccome insistevano nell'interrogarlo, alzò il capo e disse loro: "Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli per primo la pietra contro di lei".
Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.8 E chinatosi di nuovo, scriveva per terra.
When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had goneand Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle.9 Ma quelli, udito ciò, se ne andarono uno per uno, cominciando dai più anziani fino agli ultimi.
Rimase solo Gesù con la donna là in mezzo.
Jesus again straightened up and said, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?'10 Alzatosi allora Gesù le disse: "Donna, dove sono? Nessuno ti ha condannata?".
'No one, sir,' she replied. 'Neither do I condemn you,' said Jesus. 'Go away, and from this moment sinno more.'11 Ed essa rispose: "Nessuno, Signore".

When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who fol ows me wilnot be walking in the dark, but wil have the light of life.12 Di nuovo Gesù parlò loro: "Io sono la luce del mondo; chi segue me, non camminerà nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce della vita".

At this the Pharisees said to him, 'You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not true.'13 Gli dissero allora i farisei: "Tu dai testimonianza di te stesso; la tua testimonianza non è vera".
Jesus replied: Even though I am testifying on my own behalf, my testimony is stil true, because I knowwhere I have come from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.14 Gesù rispose: "Anche se io rendo testimonianza di me stesso, la mia testimonianza è vera, perché so da dove vengo e dove vado. Voi invece non sapete da dove vengo o dove vado.
You judge by human standards; I judge no one,15 Voi giudicate secondo la carne; io non giudico nessuno.
but if I judge, my judgement will be true, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me;16 E anche se giudico, il mio giudizio è vero, perché non sono solo, ma io e il Padre che mi ha mandato.
and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.17 Nella vostra Legge sta scritto che la testimonianza di due persone è vera:
I testify on my own behalf, but the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf, too.18 orbene, sono io che do testimonianza di me stesso, ma anche il Padre, che mi ha mandato, mi dà testimonianza".
They asked him, 'Where is your Father then?' Jesus answered: You do not know me, nor do you knowmy Father; if you did know me, you would know my Father as wel .19 Gli dissero allora: "Dov'è tuo padre?". Rispose Gesù: "Voi non conoscete né me né il Padre; se conosceste me, conoscereste anche il Padre mio".
He spoke these words in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple.
Again he said to them: I am going away; you will look for me and you wil die in your sin. Where I amgoing, you cannot come.21 Di nuovo Gesù disse loro: "Io vado e voi mi cercherete, ma morirete nel vostro peccato. Dove vado io, voi non potete venire".
So the Jews said to one another, 'Is he going to kil himself, that he says, "Where I am going, youcannot come?" '22 Dicevano allora i Giudei: "Forse si ucciderà, dal momento che dice: Dove vado io, voi non potete venire?".
Jesus went on: You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.23 E diceva loro: "Voi siete di quaggiù, io sono di lassù; voi siete di questo mondo, io non sono di questo mondo.
I have told you already: You wil die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you wil die inyour sins.24 Vi ho detto che morirete nei vostri peccati; se infatti non credete che io sono, morirete nei vostri peccati".
So they said to him, 'Who are you?' Jesus answered: What I have told you from the outset.25 Gli dissero allora: "Tu chi sei?".
About you I have much to say and much to judge; but the one who sent me is true, and what I declareto the world I have learnt from him.26 Avrei molte cose da dire e da giudicare sul vostro conto; ma colui che mi ha mandato è veritiero, ed io dico al mondo le cose che ho udito da lui".
They did not recognise that he was talking to them about the Father.27 Non capirono che egli parlava loro del Padre.
So Jesus said: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you wil know that I am He and that I donothing of my own accord. What I say is what the Father has taught me;28 Disse allora Gesù: "Quando avrete innalzato il Figlio dell'uomo, allora saprete che Io Sono e non faccio nulla da me stesso, ma come mi ha insegnato il Padre, così io parlo.
he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.29 Colui che mi ha mandato è con me e non mi ha lasciato solo perché io faccio sempre le cose che gli sono gradite".
As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.30 A queste sue parole, molti credettero in lui.

To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: If you make my word your home you wil indeed be mydisciples;31 Gesù allora disse a quei Giudei che avevano creduto in lui: "Se rimanete fedeli alla mia parola, sarete davvero miei discepoli;
you wil come to know the truth, and the truth wil set you free.32 conoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi".
They answered, 'We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone;what do you mean, "You wil be set free?" '33 Gli risposero: "Noi siamo discendenza di Abramo e non siamo mai stati schiavi di nessuno. Come puoi tu dire: Diventerete liberi?".
Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave.34 Gesù rispose: "In verità, in verità vi dico: chiunque commette il peccato è schiavo del peccato.
Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever.35 Ora lo schiavo non resta per sempre nella casa, ma il figlio vi resta sempre;
So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.36 se dunque il Figlio vi farà liberi, sarete liberi davvero.
I know that you are descended from Abraham; but you want to kil me because my word finds no placein you.37 So che siete discendenza di Abramo.
What I speak of is what I have seen at my Father's side, and you too put into action the lessons youhave learnt from your father.38 Io dico quello che ho visto presso il Padre; anche voi dunque fate quello che avete ascoltato dal padre vostro!".
They repeated, 'Our father is Abraham.' Jesus said to them: If you are Abraham's children, do asAbraham did.39 Gli risposero: "Il nostro padre è Abramo".
As it is, you want to kill me, a man who has told you the truth as I have learnt it from God; that is notwhat Abraham did.40 Ora invece cercate di uccidere me, che vi ho detto la verità udita da Dio; questo, Abramo non l'ha fatto.
You are doing your father's work. They replied, 'We were not born illegitimate, the only father we haveis God.'41 Voi fate le opere del padre vostro". Gli risposero: "Noi non siamo nati da prostituzione, noi abbiamo un solo Padre, Dio!".
Jesus answered: If God were your father, you would love me, since I have my origin in God and havecome from him; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.42 Disse loro Gesù: "Se Dio fosse vostro Padre, certo mi amereste, perché da Dio sono uscito e vengo; non sono venuto da me stesso, ma lui mi ha mandato.
Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot bear to listen to my words.43 Perché non comprendete il mio linguaggio?
You are from your father, the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murdererfrom the start; he was never grounded in the truth; there is no truth in him at all. When he lies he is speaking trueto his nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.44 voi che avete per padre il diavolo, e volete compiere i desideri del padre vostro.
But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.45 A me, invece, voi non credete, perché dico la verità.
Can any of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?46 Chi di voi può convincermi di peccato?
Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God; the reason why you do not listen is that you arenot from God.47 Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio: per questo voi non le ascoltate, perché non siete da Dio".
The Jews replied, 'Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and possessed by a devil?'Jesus answered:48 Gli risposero i Giudei: "Non diciamo con ragione noi che sei un Samaritano e hai un demonio?".
I am not possessed; but I honour my Father, and you deny me honour.49 Rispose Gesù: "Io non ho un demonio, ma onoro il Padre mio e voi mi disonorate.
I do not seek my own glory; there is someone who does seek it and is the judge of it.50 Io non cerco la mia gloria; vi è chi la cerca e giudica.
In al truth I tel you, whoever keeps my word wil never see death.51 In verità, in verità vi dico: se uno osserva la mia parola, non vedrà mai la morte".
The Jews said, 'Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead, and yet you say, "Whoever keeps my word wil never know the taste of death."52 Gli dissero i Giudei: "Ora sappiamo che hai un demonio. Abramo è morto, come anche i profeti, e tu dici: "Chi osserva la mia parola non conoscerà mai la morte".
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are youclaiming to be?'53 Sei tu più grande del nostro padre Abramo, che è morto?
Jesus answered: If I were to seek my own glory my glory would be worth nothing; in fact, my glory isconferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, 'He is our God,'54 Rispose Gesù: "Se io glorificassi me stesso, la mia gloria non sarebbe nulla; chi mi glorifica è il Padre mio, del quale voi dite: "È nostro Dio!",
although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say, 'I do not know him,' I should be aliar, as you yourselves are. But I do know him, and I keep his word.55 e non lo conoscete.
Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.56 Abramo, vostro padre, esultò nella speranza di vedere il mio giorno; lo vide e se ne rallegrò".
The Jews then said, 'You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!'57 Gli dissero allora i Giudei: "Non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai visto Abramo?".
Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.58 Rispose loro Gesù: "In verità, in verità vi dico: prima che Abramo fosse, Io Sono".
At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.59 Allora raccolsero pietre per scagliarle contro di lui; ma Gesù si nascose e uscì dal tempio.
