NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
On the first day of the week, at the first sign of dawn, they went to the tomb with the spices they hadprepared.1 Il primo giorno dopo il sabato, di buon mattino, si recarono alla tomba, portando con sé gli aromi che avevano preparato.
They found that the stone had been rol ed away from the tomb,2 Trovarono la pietra rotolata via dal sepolcro;
but on entering they could not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3 ma, entrate, non trovarono il corpo del Signore Gesù.
As they stood there puzzled about this, two men in bril iant clothes suddenly appeared at their side.4 Mentre erano ancora incerte, ecco due uomini apparire vicino a loro in vesti sfolgoranti.
Terrified, the women bowed their heads to the ground. But the two said to them, 'Why look among thedead for someone who is alive?5 Essendosi le donne impaurite e avendo chinato il volto a terra, essi dissero loro: "Perché cercate tra i morti colui che è vivo?
He is not here; he has risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee:6 Non è qui, è risuscitato. Ricordatevi come vi parlò quando era ancora in Galilea,
that the Son of man was destined to be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, andrise again on the third day.'7 dicendo che bisognava che il Figlio dell'uomo fosse consegnato in mano ai peccatori, che fosse crocifisso e risuscitasse il terzo giorno".
And they remembered his words.8 Ed esse si ricordarono delle sue parole.

And they returned from the tomb and told al this to the Eleven and to al the others.9 E, tornate dal sepolcro, annunziarono tutto questo agli Undici e a tutti gli altri.
The women were Mary of Magdala, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. And the other womenwith them also told the apostles,10 Erano Maria di Màgdala, Giovanna e Maria di Giacomo. Anche le altre che erano insieme lo raccontarono agli apostoli.
but this story of theirs seemed pure nonsense, and they did not believe them.11 Quelle parole parvero loro come un vaneggiamento e non credettero ad esse.

Peter, however, went off to the tomb, running. He bent down and looked in and saw the linen clothsbut nothing else; he then went back home, amazed at what had happened.12 Pietro tuttavia corse al sepolcro e chinatosi vide solo le bende. E tornò a casa pieno di stupore per l'accaduto.

Now that very same day, two of them were on their way to a vil age cal ed Emmaus, seven miles fromJerusalem,13 Ed ecco in quello stesso giorno due di loro erano in cammino per un villaggio distante circa sette miglia da Gerusalemme, di nome Èmmaus,
and they were talking together about al that had happened.14 e conversavano di tutto quello che era accaduto.
And it happened that as they were talking together and discussing it, Jesus himself came up andwalked by their side;15 Mentre discorrevano e discutevano insieme, Gesù in persona si accostò e camminava con loro.
but their eyes were prevented from recognising him.16 Ma i loro occhi erano incapaci di riconoscerlo.
He said to them, 'What are all these things that you are discussing as you walk along?' They stopped,their faces downcast.17 Ed egli disse loro: "Che sono questi discorsi che state facendo fra voi durante il cammino?". Si fermarono, col volto triste;
Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, 'You must be the only person staying in Jerusalemwho does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.'18 uno di loro, di nome Clèopa, gli disse: "Tu solo sei così forestiero in Gerusalemme da non sapere ciò che vi è accaduto in questi giorni?".
He asked, 'What things?' They answered, 'Al about Jesus of Nazareth, who showed himself aprophet powerful in action and speech before God and the whole people;19 Domandò: "Che cosa?". Gli risposero: "Tutto ciò che riguarda Gesù Nazareno, che fu profeta potente in opere e in parole, davanti a Dio e a tutto il popolo;
and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had himcrucified.20 come i sommi sacerdoti e i nostri capi lo hanno consegnato per farlo condannare a morte e poi l'hanno crocifisso.
Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not al : two whole dayshave now gone by since it al happened;21 Noi speravamo che fosse lui a liberare Israele; con tutto ciò son passati tre giorni da quando queste cose sono accadute.
and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning,22 Ma alcune donne, delle nostre, ci hanno sconvolti; recatesi al mattino al sepolcro
and when they could not find the body, they came back to tel us they had seen a vision of angelswho declared he was alive.23 e non avendo trovato il suo corpo, son venute a dirci di aver avuto anche una visione di angeli, i quali affermano che egli è vivo.
Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but ofhim they saw nothing.'24 Alcuni dei nostri sono andati al sepolcro e hanno trovato come avevan detto le donne, ma lui non l'hanno visto".
Then he said to them, 'You foolish men! So slow to believe al that the prophets have said!25 Ed egli disse loro: "Sciocchi e tardi di cuore nel credere alla parola dei profeti!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer before entering into his glory?'26 Non bisognava che il Cristo sopportasse queste sofferenze per entrare nella sua gloria?".
Then, starting with Moses and going through al the prophets, he explained to them the passagesthroughout the scriptures that were about himself.27 E cominciando da Mosè e da tutti i profeti spiegò loro in tutte le Scritture ciò che si riferiva a lui.
When they drew near to the vil age to which they were going, he made as if to go on;28 Quando furon vicini al villaggio dove erano diretti, egli fece come se dovesse andare più lontano.
but they pressed him to stay with them saying, 'It is nearly evening, and the day is almost over.' So hewent in to stay with them.29 Ma essi insistettero: "Resta con noi perché si fa sera e il giorno già volge al declino". Egli entrò per rimanere con loro.
Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it andhanded it to them.30 Quando fu a tavola con loro, prese il pane, disse la benedizione, lo spezzò e lo diede loro.
And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight.31 Allora si aprirono loro gli occhi e lo riconobbero. Ma lui sparì dalla loro vista.
Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road andexplained the scriptures to us?'32 Ed essi si dissero l'un l'altro: "Non ci ardeva forse il cuore nel petto mentre conversava con noi lungo il cammino, quando ci spiegava le Scritture?".
They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled togetherwith their companions,33 E partirono senz'indugio e fecero ritorno a Gerusalemme, dove trovarono riuniti gli Undici e gli altri che erano con loro,
who said to them, 'The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon.'34 i quali dicevano: "Davvero il Signore è risorto ed è apparso a Simone".
Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at thebreaking of bread.35 Essi poi riferirono ciò che era accaduto lungo la via e come l'avevano riconosciuto nello spezzare il pane.

They were still talking about al this when he himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace bewith you!'36 Mentre essi parlavano di queste cose, Gesù in persona apparve in mezzo a loro e disse: "Pace a voi!".
In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost.37 Stupiti e spaventati credevano di vedere un fantasma.
But he said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts stirring in your hearts?38 Ma egli disse: "Perché siete turbati, e perché sorgono dubbi nel vostro cuore?
See by my hands and my feet that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has noflesh and bones as you can see I have.'39 Guardate le mie mani e i miei piedi: sono proprio io! Toccatemi e guardate; un fantasma non ha carne e ossa come vedete che io ho".
And as he said this he showed them his hands and his feet.40 Dicendo questo, mostrò loro le mani e i piedi.
Their joy was so great that they stil could not believe it, as they were dumbfounded; so he said tothem, 'Have you anything here to eat?'41 Ma poiché per la grande gioia ancora non credevano ed erano stupefatti, disse: "Avete qui qualche cosa da mangiare?".
And they offered him a piece of gril ed fish,42 Gli offrirono una porzione di pesce arrostito;
which he took and ate before their eyes.43 egli lo prese e lo mangiò davanti a loro.

Then he told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was stil with you, that everything writtenabout me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, was destined to be fulfilled.'44 Poi disse: "Sono queste le parole che vi dicevo quando ero ancora con voi: bisogna che si compiano tutte le cose scritte su di me nella Legge di Mosè, nei Profeti e nei Salmi".
He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures,45 Allora aprì loro la mente all'intelligenza delle Scritture e disse:
and he said to them, 'So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from thedead,46 "Così sta scritto: il Cristo dovrà patire e risuscitare dai morti il terzo giorno
and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to al nations,beginning from Jerusalem.47 e nel suo nome saranno predicati a tutte le genti la conversione e il perdono dei peccati, cominciando da Gerusalemme.
You are witnesses to this.48 Di questo voi siete testimoni.
'And now I am sending upon you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city, then, until you areclothed with the power from on high.'49 E io manderò su di voi quello che il Padre mio ha promesso; ma voi restate in città, finché non siate rivestiti di potenza dall'alto".

Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them.50 Poi li condusse fuori verso Betània e, alzate le mani, li benedisse.
Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.51 Mentre li benediceva, si staccò da loro e fu portato verso il cielo.
They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem ful of joy;52 Ed essi, dopo averlo adorato, tornarono a Gerusalemme con grande gioia;
and they were continually in the Temple praising God.53 e stavano sempre nel tempio lodando Dio.
