NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
It was just about this time that some people arrived and told him about the Galileans whose bloodPilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. At this he said to them,1 In quello stesso tempo si presentarono alcuni a riferirgli circa quei Galilei, il cui sangue Pilato aveva mescolato con quello dei loro sacrifici.
'Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than any others, that this should havehappened to them?2 Prendendo la parola, Gesù rispose: "Credete che quei Galilei fossero più peccatori di tutti i Galilei, per aver subito tale sorte?
They were not, I tel you. No; but unless you repent you wil al perish as they did.3 No, vi dico, ma se non vi convertite, perirete tutti allo stesso modo.
Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fel , kil ing them al ? Do you suppose that they weremore guilty than al the other people living in Jerusalem?4 O quei diciotto, sopra i quali rovinò la torre di Sìloe e li uccise, credete che fossero più colpevoli di tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme?
They were not, I tel you. No; but unless you repent you wil al perish as they did.'5 No, vi dico, ma se non vi convertite, perirete tutti allo stesso modo".

He told this parable, 'A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on itbut found none.6 Disse anche questa parabola: "Un tale aveva un fico piantato nella vigna e venne a cercarvi frutti, ma non ne trovò.
He said to his vinedresser, "For three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree andfinding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?"7 Allora disse al vignaiolo: Ecco, son tre anni che vengo a cercare frutti su questo fico, ma non ne trovo. Taglialo. Perché deve sfruttare il terreno?
"Sir," the man replied, "leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it:8 Ma quegli rispose: Padrone, lascialo ancora quest'anno finché io gli zappi attorno e vi metta il concime
it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down." '9 e vedremo se porterà frutto per l'avvenire; se no, lo taglierai".

One Sabbath day he was teaching in one of the synagogues,10 Una volta stava insegnando in una sinagoga il giorno di sabato.
and there before him was a woman who for eighteen years had been possessed by a spirit thatcrippled her; she was bent double and quite unable to stand upright.11 C'era là una donna che aveva da diciotto anni uno spirito che la teneva inferma; era curva e non poteva drizzarsi in nessun modo.
When Jesus saw her he cal ed her over and said, 'Woman, you are freed from your disability,'12 Gesù la vide, la chiamò a sé e le disse: "Donna, sei libera dalla tua infermità",
and he laid his hands on her. And at once she straightened up, and she glorified God.13 e le impose le mani. Subito quella si raddrizzò e glorificava Dio.
But the president of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and headdressed all those present saying, 'There are six days when work is to be done. Come and be healed on one ofthose days and not on the Sabbath.'14 Ma il capo della sinagoga, sdegnato perché Gesù aveva operato quella guarigione di sabato, rivolgendosi alla folla disse: "Ci sono sei giorni in cui si deve lavorare; in quelli dunque venite a farvi curare e non in giorno di sabato".
But the Lord answered him and said, 'Hypocrites! Is there one of you who does not untie his ox or hisdonkey from the manger on the Sabbath and take it out for watering?15 Il Signore replicò: "Ipocriti, non scioglie forse, di sabato, ciascuno di voi il bue o l'asino dalla mangiatoia, per condurlo ad abbeverarsi?
And this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has held bound these eighteen years -- was itnot right to untie this bond on the Sabbath day?'16 E questa figlia di Abramo, che satana ha tenuto legata diciott'anni, non doveva essere sciolta da questo legame in giorno di sabato?".
When he said this, all his adversaries were covered with confusion, and al the people were overjoyedat al the wonders he worked.17 Quando egli diceva queste cose, tutti i suoi avversari si vergognavano, mentre la folla intera esultava per tutte le meraviglie da lui compiute.

He went on to say, 'What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with?18 Diceva dunque: "A che cosa è simile il regno di Dio, e a che cosa lo rassomiglierò?
It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his garden: it grew and became a tree, andthe birds of the air sheltered in its branches.'19 È simile a un granellino di senapa, che un uomo ha preso e gettato nell'orto; poi è cresciuto e diventato un arbusto, e gli uccelli del cielo si sono posati tra i suoi rami".

Again he said, 'What shall I compare the kingdom of God with?20 E ancora: "A che cosa rassomiglierò il regno di Dio?
It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour til it was leavened althrough.'21 È simile al lievito che una donna ha preso e nascosto in tre staia di farina, finché sia tutta fermentata".

Through towns and vil ages he went teaching, making his way to Jerusalem.22 Passava per città e villaggi, insegnando, mentre camminava verso Gerusalemme.
Someone said to him, 'Sir, wil there be only a few saved?' He said to them,23 Un tale gli chiese: "Signore, sono pochi quelli che si salvano?". Rispose:
'Try your hardest to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many wil try to enter and wil notsucceed.24 "Sforzatevi di entrare per la porta stretta, perché molti, vi dico, cercheranno di entrarvi, ma non ci riusciranno.
'Once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you may find yourself standingoutside knocking on the door, saying, "Lord, open to us," but he will answer, "I do not know where you comefrom."25 Quando il padrone di casa si alzerà e chiuderà la porta, rimasti fuori, comincerete a bussare alla porta, dicendo: Signore, aprici. Ma egli vi risponderà: Non vi conosco, non so di dove siete.
Then you wil start saying, "We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets,"26 Allora comincerete a dire: Abbiamo mangiato e bevuto in tua presenza e tu hai insegnato nelle nostre piazze.
but he wil reply, "I do not know where you come from; away from me, al evil doers!"27 Ma egli dichiarerà: Vi dico che non so di dove siete. Allontanatevi da me voi tutti operatori d'iniquità!
'Then there wil be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob andal the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrown out.28 Là ci sarà pianto e stridore di denti quando vedrete Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe e tutti i profeti nel regno di Dio e voi cacciati fuori.
And people from east and west, from north and south, wil come and sit down at the feast in thekingdom of God.29 Verranno da oriente e da occidente, da settentrione e da mezzogiorno e siederanno a mensa nel regno di Dio.
'Look, there are those now last who will be first, and those now first who wil be last.'30 Ed ecco, ci sono alcuni tra gli ultimi che saranno primi e alcuni tra i primi che saranno ultimi".

Just at this time some Pharisees came up. 'Go away,' they said. 'Leave this place, because Herodmeans to kill you.'31 In quel momento si avvicinarono alcuni farisei a dirgli: "Parti e vattene via di qui, perché Erode ti vuole uccidere".
He replied, 'You may go and give that fox this message: Look! Today and tomorrow I drive out devilsand heal, and on the third day I attain my end.32 Egli rispose: "Andate a dire a quella volpe: Ecco, io scaccio i demòni e compio guarigioni oggi e domani; e il terzo giorno avrò finito.
But for today and tomorrow and the next day I must go on, since it would not be right for a prophet todie outside Jerusalem.33 Però è necessario che oggi, domani e il giorno seguente io vada per la mia strada, perché non è possibile che un profeta muoia fuori di Gerusalemme.

'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kil the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!34 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi coloro che sono mandati a te, quante volte ho voluto raccogliere i tuoi figli come una gallina la sua covata sotto le ali e voi non avete voluto!
Look! Your house wil be left to you. Yes, I promise you, you shal not see me till the time comeswhen you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord!'35 Ecco, 'la vostra casa vi viene lasciata deserta'! Vi dico infatti che non mi vedrete più fino al tempo in cui direte: 'Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore!'".
