NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Now it happened that he was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciplessaid, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'1 Un giorno Gesù si trovava in un luogo a pregare e quando ebbe finito uno dei discepoli gli disse: "Signore, insegnaci a pregare, come anche Giovanni ha insegnato ai suoi discepoli".
He said to them, 'When you pray, this is what to say: Father, may your name be held holy, yourkingdom come;2 Ed egli disse loro: "Quando pregate, dite:

Padre, sia santificato il tuo nome,
venga il tuo regno;
give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins,3 dacci ogni giorno il nostro pane quotidiano,
for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.'4 e perdonaci i nostri peccati,
perché anche noi perdoniamo ad ogni nostro debitore,
e non ci indurre in tentazione".

He also said to them, 'Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night tosay, "My friend, lend me three loaves,5 Poi aggiunse: "Se uno di voi ha un amico e va da lui a mezzanotte a dirgli: Amico, prestami tre pani,
because a friend of mine on his travels has just arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him;"6 perché è giunto da me un amico da un viaggio e non ho nulla da mettergli davanti;
and the man answers from inside the house, "Do not bother me. The door is bolted now, and mychildren are with me in bed; I cannot get up to give it to you."7 e se quegli dall'interno gli risponde: Non m'importunare, la porta è già chiusa e i miei bambini sono a letto con me, non posso alzarmi per darteli;
I tel you, if the man does not get up and give it to him for friendship's sake, persistence wil make himget up and give his friend al he wants.8 vi dico che, se anche non si alzerà a darglieli per amicizia, si alzerà a dargliene quanti gliene occorrono almeno per la sua insistenza.

'So I say to you: Ask, and it wil be given to you; search, and you wil find; knock, and the door wil beopened to you.9 Ebbene io vi dico: Chiedete e vi sarà dato, cercate e troverete, bussate e vi sarà aperto.
For everyone who asks receives; everyone who searches finds; everyone who knocks wil have thedoor opened.10 Perché chi chiede ottiene, chi cerca trova, e a chi bussa sarà aperto.
What father among you, if his son asked for a fish, would hand him a snake?11 Quale padre tra voi, se il figlio gli chiede un pane, gli darà una pietra? O se gli chiede un pesce, gli darà al posto del pesce una serpe?
Or if he asked for an egg, hand him a scorpion?12 O se gli chiede un uovo, gli darà uno scorpione?
If you then, evil as you are, know how to give your children what is good, how much more wil theheavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!'13 Se dunque voi, che siete cattivi, sapete dare cose buone ai vostri figli, quanto più il Padre vostro celeste darà lo Spirito Santo a coloro che glielo chiedono!".

He was driving out a devil and it was dumb; and it happened that when the devil had gone out thedumb man spoke, and the people were amazed.14 Gesù stava scacciando un demonio che era muto. Uscito il demonio, il muto cominciò a parlare e le folle rimasero meravigliate.
But some of them said, 'It is through Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that he drives devils out.'15 Ma alcuni dissero: "È in nome di Beelzebùl, capo dei demòni, che egli scaccia i demòni".
Others asked him, as a test, for a sign from heaven;16 Altri poi, per metterlo alla prova, gli domandavano un segno dal cielo.
but, knowing what they were thinking, he said to them, 'Any kingdom which is divided against itself isheading for ruin, and house col apses against house.17 Egli, conoscendo i loro pensieri, disse: "Ogni regno diviso in se stesso va in rovina e una casa cade sull'altra.
So, too, with Satan: if he is divided against himself, how can his kingdom last? - since you claim thatit is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out.18 Ora, se anche satana è diviso in se stesso, come potrà stare in piedi il suo regno? Voi dite che io scaccio i demòni in nome di Beelzebùl.
Now if it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out, through whom do your own sons drive them out?They shall be your judges, then.19 Ma se io scaccio i demòni in nome di Beelzebùl, i vostri discepoli in nome di chi li scacciano? Perciò essi stessi saranno i vostri giudici.
But if it is through the finger of God that I drive devils out, then the kingdom of God has indeed caughtyou unawares.20 Se invece io scaccio i demòni con il dito di Dio, è dunque giunto a voi il regno di Dio.
So long as a strong man fully armed guards his own home, his goods are undisturbed;21 Quando un uomo forte, bene armato, fa la guardia al suo palazzo, tutti i suoi beni stanno al sicuro.
but when someone stronger than himself attacks and defeats him, the stronger man takes away allthe weapons he relied on and shares out his spoil.22 Ma se arriva uno più forte di lui e lo vince, gli strappa via l'armatura nella quale confidava e ne distribuisce il bottino.

'Anyone who is not with me is against me; and anyone who does not gather in with me throws away.23 Chi non è con me, è contro di me; e chi non raccoglie con me, disperde.

'When an unclean spirit goes out of someone it wanders through waterless country looking for aplace to rest, and not finding one it says, "I wil go back to the home I came from."24 Quando lo spirito immondo esce dall'uomo, si aggira per luoghi aridi in cerca di riposo e, non trovandone, dice: Ritornerò nella mia casa da cui sono uscito.
But on arrival, finding it swept and tidied,25 Venuto, la trova spazzata e adorna.
it then goes off and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and set uphouse there, and so that person ends up worse off than before.'26 Allora va, prende con sé altri sette spiriti peggiori di lui ed essi entrano e vi alloggiano e la condizione finale di quell'uomo diventa peggiore della prima".

It happened that as he was speaking, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, 'Blessed thewomb that bore you and the breasts that fed you!'27 Mentre diceva questo, una donna alzò la voce di mezzo alla folla e disse: "Beato il ventre che ti ha portato e il seno da cui hai preso il latte!".
But he replied, 'More blessed stil are those who hear the word of God and keep it!'28 Ma egli disse: "Beati piuttosto coloro che ascoltano la parola di Dio e la osservano!".

The crowds got even bigger and he addressed them, 'This is an evil generation; it is asking for a sign.The only sign it wil be given is the sign of Jonah.29 Mentre le folle si accalcavano, Gesù cominciò a dire: "Questa generazione è una generazione malvagia; essa cerca un segno, ma non le sarà dato nessun segno fuorché il segno di Giona.
For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so wil the Son of man be a sign to thisgeneration.30 Poiché come Giona fu un segno per quelli di Nìnive, così anche il Figlio dell'uomo lo sarà per questa generazione.
On Judgement Day the Queen of the South will stand up against the people of this generation and betheir condemnation, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, look,there is something greater than Solomon here.31 La regina del sud sorgerà nel giudizio insieme con gli uomini di questa generazione e li condannerà; perché essa venne dalle estremità della terra per ascoltare la sapienza di Salomone. Ed ecco, ben più di Salomone c'è qui.
On Judgement Day the men of Nineveh wil appear against this generation and be its condemnation,because when Jonah preached they repented; and, look, there is something greater than Jonah here.32 Quelli di Nìnive sorgeranno nel giudizio insieme con questa generazione e la condanneranno; perché essi alla predicazione di Giona si convertirono. Ed ecco, ben più di Giona c'è qui.

'No one lights a lamp and puts it in some hidden place or under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand so that people may see the light when they come in.33 Nessuno accende una lucerna e la mette in luogo nascosto o sotto il moggio, ma sopra il lucerniere, perché quanti entrano vedano la luce.
The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is clear, your whole body, too, is fil ed with light; butwhen it is diseased your body, too, wil be darkened.34 La lucerna del tuo corpo è l'occhio. Se il tuo occhio è sano, anche il tuo corpo è tutto nella luce; ma se è malato, anche il tuo corpo è nelle tenebre.
See to it then that the light inside you is not darkness.35 Bada dunque che la luce che è in te non sia tenebra.
If, therefore, your whole body is fil ed with light, and not darkened at all, it wil be light entirely, aswhen the lamp shines on you with its rays.'36 Se il tuo corpo è tutto luminoso senza avere alcuna parte nelle tenebre, tutto sarà luminoso, come quando la lucerna ti illumina con il suo bagliore".

He had just finished speaking when a Pharisee invited him to dine at his house. He went in and satdown at table.37 Dopo che ebbe finito di parlare, un fariseo lo invitò a pranzo. Egli entrò e si mise a tavola.
The Pharisee saw this and was surprised that he had not first washed before the meal.38 Il fariseo si meravigliò che non avesse fatto le abluzioni prima del pranzo.
But the Lord said to him, 'You Pharisees! You clean the outside of cup and plate, while insideyourselves you are fil ed with extortion and wickedness.39 Allora il Signore gli disse: "Voi farisei purificate l'esterno della coppa e del piatto, ma il vostro interno è pieno di rapina e di iniquità.
Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside too?40 Stolti! Colui che ha fatto l'esterno non ha forse fatto anche l'interno?
Instead, give alms from what you have and, look, everything wil be clean for you.41 Piuttosto date in elemosina quel che c'è dentro, ed ecco, tutto per voi sarà mondo.
But alas for you Pharisees, because you pay your tithe of mint and rue and al sorts of garden herbsand neglect justice and the love of God! These you should have practised, without neglecting the others.42 Ma guai a voi, farisei, che pagate la decima della menta, della ruta e di ogni erbaggio, e poi trasgredite la giustizia e l'amore di Dio. Queste cose bisognava curare senza trascurare le altre.
Alas for you Pharisees, because you like to take the seats of honour in the synagogues and to begreeted respectful y in the market squares!43 Guai a voi, farisei, che avete cari i primi posti nelle sinagoghe e i saluti sulle piazze.
Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that people walk on without knowing it!'44 Guai a voi perché siete come quei sepolcri che non si vedono e la gente vi passa sopra senza saperlo".
A lawyer then spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'when you speak like this you insult us too.'45 Uno dei dottori della legge intervenne: "Maestro, dicendo questo, offendi anche noi".
But he said, 'Alas for you lawyers as wel , because you load on people burdens that are unendurable,burdens that you yourselves do not touch with your fingertips.46 Egli rispose: "Guai anche a voi, dottori della legge, che caricate gli uomini di pesi insopportabili, e quei pesi voi non li toccate nemmeno con un dito!
'Alas for you because you build tombs for the prophets, the people your ancestors kil ed!47 Guai a voi, che costruite i sepolcri dei profeti, e i vostri padri li hanno uccisi.
In this way you both witness to what your ancestors did and approve it; they did the killing, you do thebuilding.48 Così voi date testimonianza e approvazione alle opere dei vostri padri: essi li uccisero e voi costruite loro i sepolcri.
'And that is why the Wisdom of God said, "I wil send them prophets and apostles; some they willslaughter and persecute,49 Per questo la sapienza di Dio ha detto: Manderò a loro profeti e apostoli ed essi li uccideranno e perseguiteranno;
so that this generation wil have to answer for every prophet's blood that has been shed since thefoundation of the world,50 perché sia chiesto conto a questa generazione del sangue di tutti i profeti, versato fin dall'inizio del mondo,
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the Temple."Yes, I tel you, this generation wil have to answer for it all.51 dal sangue di Abele fino al sangue di Zaccaria, che fu ucciso tra l'altare e il santuario. Sì, vi dico, ne sarà chiesto conto a questa generazione.
'Alas for you lawyers who have taken away the key of knowledge! You have not gone in yourselvesand have prevented others from going in who wanted to.'52 Guai a voi, dottori della legge, che avete tolto la chiave della scienza. Voi non siete entrati, e a quelli che volevano entrare l'avete impedito".
When he left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began a furious attack on him and tried to forceanswers from him on innumerable questions,53 Quando fu uscito di là, gli scribi e i farisei cominciarono a trattarlo ostilmente e a farlo parlare su molti argomenti,
lying in wait to catch him out in something he might say.54 tendendogli insidie, per sorprenderlo in qualche parola uscita dalla sua stessa bocca.
