NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had a series of dreams; he was perturbed by this andsleep deserted him.1 Nel secondo anno del suo regno, Nabucodònosor fece un sogno e il suo animo ne fu tanto agitato da non poter più dormire.
The king then had magicians and soothsayers, sorcerers and Chaldaeans summoned to tel him whathis dreams meant. They arrived and stood in the king's presence.2 Allora il re ordinò che fossero chiamati i maghi, gli astrologi, gli incantatori e i caldei a spiegargli i sogni. Questi vennero e si presentarono al re.
The king said to them, 'I have had a dream, and my mind is troubled by a wish to understand it.'3 Egli disse loro: "Ho fatto un sogno e il mio animo si è tormentato per trovarne la spiegazione".
The Chaldaeans answered the king: 'May your majesty live for ever! Tel your servants the dream, andwe shal reveal its meaning for you.'4 I caldei risposero al re: "Re, vivi per sempre. Racconta il sogno ai tuoi servi e noi te ne daremo la spiegazione".
The king answered the Chaldaeans, 'This is my firm resolve: if you cannot tel me what I dreamt andwhat it means, I shal have you torn limb from limb and your houses turned into dunghil s.5 Rispose il re ai caldei: "Questa è la mia decisione: se voi non mi rivelate il sogno e la sua spiegazione sarete fatti a pezzi e le vostre case saranno ridotte in letamai.
If, on the other hand, you can tel me what I dreamt and what it means, I shal give you presents, rewards and high honour. So tel me what I dreamt and what it means.'6 Se invece mi rivelerete il sogno e me ne darete la spiegazione, riceverete da me doni, regali e grandi onori. Ditemi dunque il sogno e la sua spiegazione".
A second time they said, 'Let the king tel his dream to his servants, and we shal reveal its meaning.'7 Essi replicarono: "Esponga il re il sogno ai suoi servi e noi ne daremo la spiegazione".
But the king retorted, 'It is plain to me that you are trying to gain time, knowing my proclaimed resolve.8 Rispose il re: "Comprendo bene che voi volete guadagnar tempo, perché avete inteso la mia decisione.
If you do not interpret my dream for me, there will be but one sentence passed on you al ; you haveagreed among yourselves to make me misleading and tortuous speeches while the time goes by. So tel mewhat my dream was, and then I shal know whether you can interpret it.'9 Se non mi dite qual era il mio sogno, una sola sarà la vostra sorte. Vi siete messi d'accordo per darmi risposte astute e false in attesa che le circostanze si mutino. Perciò ditemi il sogno e io saprò che voi siete in grado di darmene anche la spiegazione".
The Chaldaeans answered the king, 'Nobody in the world could explain the king's problem; what ismore, no other king, governor or chief would think of putting such a question to any magician, soothsayer orChaldaean.10 I caldei risposero davanti al re: "Non c'è nessuno al mondo che possa soddisfare la richiesta del re: difatti nessun re, per quanto potente e grande, ha mai domandato una cosa simile ad un mago, indovino o caldeo.
The question the king asks is difficult, and no one can find the king an answer to it, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals.'11 La richiesta del re è tanto difficile, che nessuno ne può dare al re la risposta, se non gli dèi la cui dimora è lontano dagli uomini".
At this the king flew into a rage and ordered al the Babylonian sages to be put to death.12 Allora il re, acceso di furore, ordinò che tutti i saggi di Babilonia fossero messi a morte.
On publication of the decree to have the sages killed, search was made for Daniel and hiscompanions to have them put to death.13 Il decreto fu pubblicato e già i saggi venivano uccisi; anche Daniele e i suoi compagni erano ricercati per essere messi a morte.

Then, with shrewd and cautious words, Daniel approached Arioch, the king's chief executioner, whenhe was on his way to kil the Babylonian sages.14 Ma Daniele rivolse parole piene di saggezza e di prudenza ad Ariòch, capo delle guardie del re, che stava per uccidere i saggi di Babilonia,
To this royal official Arioch he said, 'Why has the king issued such a harsh decree?' Arioch explainedmatters to Daniel,15 e disse ad Ariòch, ufficiale del re: "Perché il re ha emanato un decreto così severo?". Ariòch ne spiegò il motivo a Daniele.
and Daniel went off to ask the king for a stay of execution to give him the opportunity of revealing his interpretation to the king.16 Egli allora entrò dal re e pregò che gli si concedesse tempo: egli avrebbe dato la spiegazione dei sogni al re.
Daniel then went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah what had happened,17 Poi Daniele andò a casa e narrò la cosa ai suoi compagni, Anania, Misaele e Azaria,
urging them to beg the God of heaven to show his mercy and explain the mysterious secret, so thatDaniel and his friends might be spared the fate of the other Babylonian sages.18 ed essi implorarono misericordia dal Dio del cielo riguardo a questo mistero, perché Daniele e i suoi compagni non fossero messi a morte insieme con tutti gli altri saggi di Babilonia.
The mystery was then revealed to Daniel in a night-vision, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven.19 Allora il mistero fu svelato a Daniele in una visione notturna; perciò Daniele benedisse il Dio del cielo:

This is what Daniel said: May the name of God be blessed for ever and ever, since wisdom and powerare his alone.20 "Sia benedetto il nome di Dio di secolo in secolo,
perché a lui appartengono la sapienza e la potenza.

It is he who controls the procession of times and seasons, who makes and unmakes kings, whoconfers wisdom on the wise, and knowledge on those with discernment,21 Egli alterna tempi e stagioni, depone i re e li innalza,
concede la sapienza ai saggi,
agli intelligenti il sapere.

who uncovers depths and mysteries, who knows what lies in darkness; and light dwel s with him.22 Svela cose profonde e occulte
e sa quel che è celato nelle tenebre
e presso di lui è la luce.

To you, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise for having given me wisdom and strength: to meyou have explained what we asked you, to us you have explained the king's problem.23 Gloria e lode a te, Dio dei miei padri,
che mi hai concesso la sapienza e la forza,
mi hai manifestato ciò che ti abbiamo domandato
e ci hai illustrato la richiesta del re".

So Daniel went to see Arioch, whom the king had made responsible for putting the Babylonian sagesto death. Going in, he said, 'Do not put the Babylonian sages to death. Take me into the king's presence and Iwil reveal the meaning to the king.'24 Allora Daniele si recò da Ariòch, al quale il re aveva affidato l'incarico di uccidere i saggi di Babilonia, e presentatosi gli disse: "Non uccidere i saggi di Babilonia, ma conducimi dal re e io gli farò conoscere la spiegazione del sogno".
Arioch lost no time in bringing Daniel to the king. 'Among the exiles from Judah,' he said, 'I havediscovered a man who can reveal the meaning to the king.'25 Ariòch condusse in fretta Daniele alla presenza del re e gli disse: "Ho trovato un uomo fra i Giudei deportati, il quale farà conoscere al re la spiegazione del sogno".
The king said to Daniel (who had been given the name Belteshazzar), 'Can you tel me what I dreamtand what it means?'26 Il re disse allora a Daniele, chiamato Baltazzàr: "Puoi tu davvero rivelarmi il sogno che ho fatto e darmene la spiegazione?".
Facing the king, Daniel replied, 'None of the sages, soothsayers, magicians or exorcists has beenable to tell the king the truth of the mystery which the king has propounded;27 Daniele, davanti al re, rispose: "Il mistero di cui il re chiede la spiegazione non può essere spiegato né da saggi, né da astrologi, né da maghi, né da indovini;
but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries and who has shown King Nebuchadnezzar whatis to take place in the final days.
'Your Majesty, on your bed your thoughts turned to what would happen in the future, and the Revealerof Mysteries disclosed to you what is to take place.29 O re, i pensieri che ti sono venuti mentre eri a letto riguardano il futuro; colui che svela i misteri ha voluto svelarti ciò che dovrà avvenire.
This mystery has been revealed to me, not that I am wiser than anyone else, but for this sole purpose:that the king should learn what it means, and that you should understand your inmost thoughts.30 Se a me è stato svelato questo mistero, non è perché io possieda una sapienza superiore a tutti i viventi, ma perché ne sia data la spiegazione al re e tu possa conoscere i pensieri del tuo cuore.
'You have had a vision, Your Majesty; this is what you saw: a statue, a great statue of extremebrightness, stood before you, terrible to see.31 Tu stavi osservando, o re, ed ecco una statua, una statua enorme, di straordinario splendore, si ergeva davanti a te con terribile aspetto.
The head of this statue was of fine gold, its chest and arms were of silver, its belly and thighs ofbronze,32 Aveva la testa d'oro puro, il petto e le braccia d'argento, il ventre e le cosce di bronzo,
its legs of iron, its feet part iron, part clay.33 le gambe di ferro e i piedi in parte di ferro e in parte di creta.
While you were gazing, a stone broke away, untouched by any hand, and struck the statue, struck itsfeet of iron and clay and shattered them.34 Mentre stavi guardando, una pietra si staccò dal monte, ma non per mano di uomo, e andò a battere contro i piedi della statua, che erano di ferro e di argilla, e li frantumò.
Then, iron and clay, bronze, silver and gold, al broke into pieces as fine as chaff on the threshing-floorin summer. The wind blew them away, leaving not a trace behind. And the stone that had struck the statue grewinto a great mountain, fil ing the whole world.35 Allora si frantumarono anche il ferro, l'argilla, il bronzo, l'argento e l'oro e divennero come la pula sulle aie d'estate; il vento li portò via senza lasciar traccia, mentre la pietra, che aveva colpito la statua, divenne una grande montagna che riempì tutta quella regione.
This was the dream; we shal now explain to the king what it means.36 Questo è il sogno: ora ne daremo la spiegazione al re.
'You, Your Majesty, king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strengthand honour-37 Tu o re, sei il re dei re; a te il Dio del cielo ha concesso il regno, la potenza, la forza e la gloria.
human beings, wild animals, birds of the air, wherever they live, he has entrusted to your rule, makingyou king of them al -- you are the golden head.38 A te ha concesso il dominio sui figli dell'uomo, sugli animali selvatici, sugli uccelli del cielo; tu li domini tutti: tu sei la testa d'oro.
And, after you, another kingdom wil rise, not as great as yours, and then a third, of bronze, which wilrule the whole world.39 Dopo di te sorgerà un altro regno, inferiore al tuo; poi un terzo regno, quello di bronzo, che dominerà su tutta la terra.
There wil be a fourth kingdom, hard as iron, as iron that pulverises and crushes al . Like iron thatbreaks everything to pieces, it wil crush and break all the earlier kingdoms.40 Vi sarà poi un quarto regno, duro come il ferro. Come il ferro spezza e frantuma tutto, così quel regno spezzerà e frantumerà tutto.
The feet you saw, part earthenware, part iron, are a kingdom which wil be split in two, but which wilretain something of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together.41 Come hai visto, i piedi e le dita erano in parte di argilla da vasaio e in parte di ferro: ciò significa che il regno sarà diviso, ma avrà la durezza del ferro unito all'argilla.
The feet were part iron, part potter's clay: the kingdom wil be partly strong and partly brittle.42 Se le dita dei piedi erano in parte di ferro e in parte di argilla, ciò significa che una parte del regno sarà forte e l'altra fragile.
And just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together, so the two wil be mixedtogether in human seed; but they wil not hold together any more than iron wil blend with clay.43 Il fatto d'aver visto il ferro mescolato all'argilla significa che le due parti si uniranno per via di matrimoni, ma non potranno diventare una cosa sola, come il ferro non si amalgama con l'argilla.
In the days of those kings, the God of heaven wil set up a kingdom which wil never be destroyed, andthis kingdom wil not pass into the hands of another race: it will shatter and absorb all the previous kingdoms anditself last for ever-44 Al tempo di questi re, il Dio del cielo farà sorgere un regno che non sarà mai distrutto e non sarà trasmesso ad altro popolo: stritolerà e annienterà tutti gli altri regni, mentre esso durerà per sempre.
just as you saw a stone, untouched by hand, break away from the mountain and reduce iron, bronze, earthenware, silver and gold to powder. The Great God has shown the king what is to take place.

At this, King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel; he gave orders for Daniel to be offered an oblation and a fragrant sacrifice.46 Allora il re Nabucodònosor piegò la faccia a terra, si prostrò davanti a Daniele e ordinò che gli si offrissero sacrifici e incensi.
The king said to Daniel, 'Your god is indeed the God of gods, the Master of kings, and the Revealer ofMysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.'47 Quindi rivolto a Daniele gli disse: "Certo, il vostro Dio è il Dio degli dèi, il Signore dei re e il rivelatore dei misteri, poiché tu hai potuto svelare questo mistero".
The king then conferred high rank on Daniel and gave him many handsome presents. He also madehim governor of the whole province of Babylon and head of all the sages of Babylon.48 Il re esaltò Daniele e gli fece molti preziosi regali, lo costituì governatore di tutta la provincia di Babilonia e capo di tutti i saggi di Babilonia;
At Daniel's request, the king entrusted the affairs of the province of Babylon to Shadrach, Meshachand Abed-Nego; Daniel himself remained in attendance on the king.49 su richiesta di Daniele, il re fece amministratori della provincia di Babilonia, Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego. Daniele rimase alla corte del re.
