NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
1 Step down! Sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon. Sit on the ground, no throne, daughter of theChaldaeans, for never again will you be cal ed tender and delicate.1 Scendi e siedi sulla polvere,
vergine figlia di Babilonia.
Siedi a terra, senza trono,
figlia dei Caldei,
poiché non sarai più chiamata
tenera e voluttuosa.
2 Take the grinding mil , crush up the meal. Remove your veil, tie up your skirt, bare your legs, cross therivers.2 Prendi la mola e macina la farina,
attraversa i fiumi.
3 Let your nakedness be displayed and your shame exposed. I am going to take vengeance and no onewil stand in my way.3 Si scopra la tua nudità,
si mostri la tua vergogna.
"Prenderò vendetta
e nessuno interverrà",
4 Our redeemer, Yahweh Sabaoth is his name, the Holy One of Israel, says:4 dice il nostro redentore
che si chiama Signore degli eserciti,
il Santo di Israele.
5 Sit in silence, bury yourself in darkness, daughter of the Chaldaeans, for never again wil you be cal edthe mistress of kingdoms.5 Siedi in silenzio e scivola nell'ombra,
figlia dei Caldei,
perché non sarai più chiamata
Signora di regni.
6 Being angry with my people, I rejected my heritage, surrendering them into your clutches. You showedthem no mercy, you made your yoke very heavy on the aged.6 Ero adirato contro il mio popolo,
avevo lasciato profanare la mia eredità;
perciò lo misi in tuo potere,
ma tu non mostrasti loro pietà;
perfino sui vecchi facesti gravare
il tuo giogo pesante.
7 You thought, 'I shal be a queen for ever.' You did not reflect on these matters or think about the future.7 Tu pensavi: "Sempre
8 Now listen to this, voluptuous woman, lolling at ease and thinking to yourself, 'I am the only one whomatters. I shal never be widowed, never know bereavement.'8 Ora ascolta questo,
9 Yet both these things wil befall you, suddenly, in one day. Bereavement and widowhood wil suddenlybefal you in spite of al your witchcraft and the potency of your spel s.9 Ma ti accadranno queste due cose,
d'improvviso, in un sol giorno;
perdita dei figli e vedovanza
piomberanno su di te,
nonostante la moltitudine delle tue magie,
la forza dei tuoi molti scongiuri.
10 Confident in your wickedness, you thought, 'No one can see me.' Your wishes and your knowledgewere what deluded you, as you thought to yourself, 'I am the only one who matters.'10 Confidavi nella tua malizia, dicevi:
"Nessuno mi vede".
La tua saggezza e il tuo sapere
ti hanno sviato.
Eppure dicevi in cuor tuo:
"Io e nessuno fuori di me".
11 Hence, disaster wil befal you which you wil not know how to charm away, calamity overtake youwhich you wil not be able to avert, ruination will suddenly befal you, such as you have never known.11 Ti verrà addosso una sciagura
che non saprai scongiurare;
ti cadrà sopra una calamità
che non potrai evitare.
Su di te piomberà improvvisa una catastrofe
che non prevederai.
12 Keep to your spel s then, and al your sorceries, at which you have worked so hard since you wereyoung. Perhaps you wil succeed, perhaps you wil strike terror!12 Sta' pure ferma nei tuoi incantesimi
e nella moltitudine delle magie,
per cui ti sei affaticata dalla giovinezza:
forse potrai giovartene,
forse potrai far paura!
13 You have had many tiring consultations: let the astrologers come forward now and save you, the star-gazers who announce month by month what wil happen to you next.13 Ti sei stancata dei tuoi molti consiglieri:
si presentino e ti salvinogli astrologi che osservano le stelle,
i quali ogni mese ti pronosticano
che cosa ti capiterà.
14 Look, they are like wisps of straw, the fire wil burn them up. They will not save their lives from thepower of the flame. No embers these, for keeping warm, no fire to sit beside!14 Ecco, essi sono come stoppia:
il fuoco li consuma;
15 Such wil your wizards prove to be for you, for whom you have worked so hard since you were young;each wandering his own way, none of them can save you.15 Così sono diventati per te i tuoi maghi,
con i quali ti sei affaticata fin dalla giovinezza;
ognuno se ne va per suo conto,
nessuno ti viene in aiuto.
