Proverbs 18

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA
1 Whoever lives alone fol ows private whims, and is angered by advice of any kind.	1 Chi si tiene appartato cerca pretesti e con ogni mezzo attacca brighe.
2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in airing an opinion.	2 Lo stolto non ama la prudenza, ma vuol solo far mostra dei suoi sentimenti.
3 When wickedness comes, indignity comes too, and, with contempt, dishonour.	3 Con l'empietà viene il disprezzo, con il disonore anche l'ignominia.
4 Deep waters, such are human words: a gushing stream, the utterance of wisdom.	4 Le parole della bocca dell'uomo sono acqua profonda, la fonte della sapienza è un torrente che straripa.
5 It is not good to show partiality for the wicked and so to deprive the upright when giving judgement.	5 Non è bene usar riguardi all'empio per far torto al giusto in un giudizio.
6 The lips of a fool go to the law-courts with a mouth that pleads for a beating.	6 Le labbra dello stolto provocano liti e la sua bocca gli provoca percosse.
7 The mouth of the fool works its owner's ruin, the lips of a fool are a snare for their owner's life.	7 La bocca dello stolto è la sua rovina e le sue labbra sono un laccio per la sua vita.
8 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	8 Le parole del calunniatore sono come ghiotti bocconi che scendono in fondo alle viscere.
9 Whoever is idle at work is blood-brother to the destroyer.	9 Chi è indolente nel lavoro è fratello del dissipatore.
10 The name of Yahweh is a strong tower; the upright runs to it and is secure.	10 Torre fortissima è il nome del Signore: il giusto vi si rifugia ed è al sicuro.
11 The wealth of the rich forms a stronghold, a high wal , as the rich supposes.	11 I beni del ricco sono la sua roccaforte, come un'alta muraglia, a suo parere.
12 The human heart is haughty until destruction comes, before there can be glory there must be humility.	12 Prima della caduta il cuore dell'uomo si esalta, ma l'umiltà viene prima della gloria.
13 To retort without first listening is both foolish and embarrassing.	13 Chi risponde prima di avere ascoltato mostra stoltezza a propria confusione.
14 Sickness the human spirit can endure, but when the spirit is broken, who can bear this?	14 Lo spirito dell'uomo lo sostiene nella malattia, ma uno spirito afflitto chi lo solleverà?
15 The heart of the intel igent acquires learning, the ears of the wise search for knowledge.	15 La mente intelligente acquista la scienza, l'orecchio dei saggi ricerca il sapere.
16 A present will open al doors and win access to the great.	16 Il dono fa largo all'uomo e lo introduce alla presenza dei grandi.
17 The first to plead is adjudged to be upright, until the next comes and cross-examines him.	17 Il primo a parlare in una lite sembra aver ragione, ma viene il suo avversario e lo confuta.
18 The lot puts an end to disputes and decides between men of power.	18 La sorte fa cessar le discussioni e decide fra i potenti.
19 A brother offended is worse than a fortified city, and quarrels are like the locks of a keep.	19 Un fratello offeso è più irriducibile d'una roccaforte, le liti sono come le sbarre di un castello.
20 From the fruit of the mouth is a stomach fil ed, it is the yield of the lips that gives contentment.	20 Con la bocca l'uomo sazia il suo stomaco, egli si sazia con il prodotto delle labbra.
21 Death and life are in the gift of the tongue, those who indulge it must eat the fruit it yields.	21 Morte e vita sono in potere della lingua e chi l'accarezza ne mangerà i frutti.
22 He who finds a wife finds happiness, receiving a mark of favour from Yahweh.	22 Chi ha trovato una moglie ha trovato una fortuna, ha ottenuto il favore del Signore.
23 The language of the poor is entreaty, the answer of the rich harshness.	23 Il povero parla con suppliche, il ricco risponde con durezza.
24 There are friends who point the way to ruin, others are closer than a brother.	24 Ci sono compagni che conducono alla rovina, ma anche amici più affezionati di un fratello.
