NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
'It is on record that the prophet Jeremiah ordered the deportees to take the fire, as we have described,1 Si trova scritto nei documenti che Geremia profeta ordinò ai deportati di prendere del fuoco, come è stato significato,
and how, having given them the Law, the prophet warned the deportees never to forget the Lord'sprecepts, nor to let their thoughts be tempted by the sight of gold and silver statues or the finery adorning them.2 e che il medesimo profeta ai deportati consegnò la legge raccomandando loro di non dimenticarsi dei comandi del Signore e di non lasciarsi traviare nelle idee, vedendo i simulacri d'oro e d'argento e il fasto di cui erano circondati,
Among other similar admonitions, he urged them not to let the Law depart from their hearts.3 e che con altre simili espressioni li esortava a non ripudiare la legge nel loro cuore.
'The same document also describes how the prophet, warned by an oracle, gave orders for the tentand the ark to go with him, when he set out for the mountain which Moses had climbed to survey God's heritage.4 Si diceva anche nello scritto che il profeta, ottenuto un responso, ordinò che lo seguissero con la tenda e l'arca. Quando giunse presso il monte dove Mosè era salito e aveva contemplato l'eredità di Dio,
On his arrival, Jeremiah found a cave-dwel ing, into which he put the tent, the ark and the altar ofincense, afterwards blocking up the entrance.5 Geremia salì e trovò un vano a forma di caverna e là introdusse la tenda, l'arca e l'altare degli incensi e sbarrò l'ingresso.
Some of his companions went back later to mark out the path but were unable to find it.6 Alcuni del suo seguito tornarono poi per segnare la strada, ma non trovarono più il luogo.
When Jeremiah learned this, he reproached them, "The place is to remain unknown", he said, "untilGod gathers his people together again and shows them his mercy.7 Geremia, saputolo, li rimproverò dicendo: Il luogo deve restare ignoto, finché Dio non avrà riunito la totalità del suo popolo e si sarà mostrato propizio.
Then the Lord wil bring these things once more to light, and the glory of the Lord will be seen, and sowil the cloud, as it was revealed in the time of Moses and when Solomon prayed that the holy place might begloriously hal owed."8 Allora il Signore mostrerà queste cose e si rivelerà la gloria del Signore e la nube, come appariva sopra Mosè, e come avvenne quando Salomone chiese che il luogo fosse solennemente santificato.
'It was also recorded how Solomon in his wisdom offered the sacrifice of the dedication and completionof the sanctuary.9 Si narrava anche che questi, dotato di sapienza, offrì il sacrificio per la dedicazione e il compimento del tempio.
As Moses had prayed to the Lord and fire had come down from heaven and burned up the sacrifice,so Solomon also prayed, and the fire from above consumed the burnt offerings.10 E allo stesso modo che Mosè aveva pregato il Signore ed era sceso il fuoco dal cielo a consumare le vittime immolate, così pregò anche Salomone e il fuoco sceso dal cielo consumò gli olocausti.
Moses had said, "Because the sacrifice for sin had not been eaten, it was burnt instead."11 Mosè aveva detto: Poiché non è stata mangiata la vittima offerta per il peccato, essa è stata consumata.
Solomon similarly observed the eight-day festival.12 Allo stesso modo anche Salomone celebrò gli otto giorni.
'In addition to the above, it was also recorded, both in these writings and in the Memoirs of Nehemiah, how Nehemiah founded a library and made a col ection of the books dealing with the kings and the prophets, thewritings of David and the letters of the kings on the subject of offerings.13 Si descrivevano le stesse cose nei documenti e nelle memorie di Neemia e come egli, fondata una biblioteca, curò la raccolta dei libri dei re, dei profeti e di Davide e le lettere dei re intorno ai doni.
Similarly, Judas made a complete col ection of the books dispersed in the late war, and these we stillhave.14 Anche Giuda ha raccolto tutti i libri andati dispersi per la guerra che abbiamo avuto, e ora si trovano presso di noi.
If you need any of them, send someone to fetch them.15 Se mai ne avete bisogno, mandate persone con l'incarico di portarveli.
'Since we are about to celebrate the purification, we now write, requesting you to observe the samedays.16 Vi abbiamo scritto mentre stiamo per celebrare la purificazione; farete ottima cosa se celebrerete anche voi questi giorni.
God, who has saved his whole people, conferring heritage, kingdom, priesthood and sanctification onal of us,17 Poiché Dio ha salvato tutto il suo popolo e ha concesso a tutti l'eredità, nonché il regno, il sacerdozio e la santificazione
as he has promised in the Law, will surely, as our hope is in him, be swift to show us mercy andgather us together from everywhere under heaven to the holy place, since he has rescued us from great evilsand has purified it.'18 come ha promesso mediante la legge, noi poniamo in Dio speranza che egli ci usi presto misericordia e voglia presto radunarci, da ogni regione posta sotto il cielo, nel luogo santo; egli infatti ci ha liberati da grandi mali e ha purificato il luogo santo".
The story of Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, the purification of the great Temple, the dedicationof the altar,19 I fatti riguardanti Giuda Maccabeo e i suoi fratelli, la purificazione del grande tempio e la dedicazione dell'altare,
together with the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes and his son Eupator,20 come anche le guerre contro Antioco Epìfane e il figlio di lui Eupàtore,
and the celestial manifestations that came to hearten the brave champions of Judaism, so that, fewthough they were, they pil aged the whole country, routed the barbarian hordes,21 nonché le manifestazioni venute dal cielo sopra coloro che si erano battuti con valore per il giudaismo, riuscendo in pochi a impadronirsi di tutta la regione e a scacciare una moltitudine di barbari,
recovered the sanctuary renowned the whole world over, liberated the city and re-established the lawsby then all but abolished, the Lord showing his favour by al his gracious help to them-22 a riconquistare il tempio famoso in tutto il mondo, a liberare la città e a ristabilire le leggi che stavano per essere soppresse, quando il Signore si rese loro propizio con ogni benevolenza:
al this, already related in five books by Jason of Cyrene, we shall attempt to condense into a singlework.23 questi fatti narrati da Giàsone di Cirene nel corso di cinque libri, ci studieremo di riassumerli in una sola composizione.
Considering the spate of figures and the difficulty encountered, because of the mass of material, bythose who wish to immerse themselves in historical records,24 Vedendo infatti la massa di numeri e l'effettiva difficoltà per chi desidera di inoltrarsi nelle narrazioni storiche, a causa della vastità della materia,
we have aimed at providing diversion for those who merely want something to read, a saving of labourfor those who enjoy committing things to memory, and profit for each and al .25 ci siamo preoccupati di offrire diletto a coloro che amano leggere, facilità a quanti intendono ritenere nella memoria, utilità a tutti gli eventuali lettori.
For us who have undertaken the drudgery of this abridgement, it has been no easy task but a matterof sweat and midnight oil,26 Per noi certo, che ci siamo sobbarcati la fatica del sunteggiare, l'impresa non si presenta facile: ci vorranno sudori e veglie,
comparable to the exacting task of someone organising a banquet, whose aim is to satisfy a variety oftastes. Nevertheless, for the sake of rendering a general service, we remain glad to endure this drudgery,27 così come non è facile preparare un banchetto e accontentare le esigenze altrui; tuttavia per far cosa gradita a molti ci sarà dolce sopportare la fatica,
leaving accuracy of detail to the historian, and concentrating our effort on tracing the outlines in thiscondensed version.28 lasciando all'autore la completa esposizione dei particolari, curandoci invece di procedere secondo gli schemi di un riassunto.
Just as the architect of a new house is responsible for the construction as a whole, while the manundertaking the ceramic painting has to take into consideration only the decorative requirements, so, I think, it iswith us.29 Come infatti in una casa nuova all'architetto tocca pensare a tutta la costruzione, mentre chi è incaricato di dipingere a fuoco e a fresco deve badare solo alla decorazione, così, penso, è per noi.
To make the subject his own, to explore its by-ways, to be meticulous about details, is the business ofthe original historian,30 L'entrare in argomento e il passare in rassegna i fatti e l'insinuarsi nei particolari, spetta all'ideatore dell'opera storica;
but the person making the adaptation must be al owed to aim at conciseness of expression and toforgo any exhaustive treatment of his subject.31 curare il sunto della esposizione e tralasciare i complementi della narrazione storica, è riservato a chi fa opera di compendio.
So now let us begin our narrative, without adding any more to what has been said above; there wouldbe no sense in expanding the preface to the history and curtailing the history itself.32 Di qui dunque cominceremo la narrazione, senza nulla aggiungere a ciò che abbiamo detto nella prefazione: sarebbe certo ingenuo abbondare nei preamboli e abbreviare poi la narrazione storica.
