NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
These agreements once concluded, Lysias returned to the king and the Jews went back to theirfarming.1 Conclusi questi accordi, Lisia ritornò presso il re; i Giudei invece si diedero a coltivare la terra.
Among the local generals, Timotheus and Apol onius son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus andDemophon, and Nicanor the Cypriarch as wel , would not allow the Jews to live in peace and quiet.2 Ma alcuni dei comandanti dei distretti e precisamente Timòteo e Apollonio, figlio di Gennèo, Ierònimo e Demofonte e, oltre questi, Nicànore, il comandante dei mercenari di Cipro, non li lasciavano vivere tranquilli né procedere in pace.
The people of Joppa committed a particularly wicked crime: they invited the Jews living among themto go aboard some boats they had lying ready, taking their wives and children. There was no hint of any intentionto harm them;3 Gli abitanti di Giaffa perpetrarono un'empietà di questo genere: invitarono i Giudei che abitavano con loro a salire con le mogli e con i figli su barche allestite da loro, come se non ci fosse alcuna cattiva intenzione a loro riguardo,
there had been a public vote by the citizens, and the Jews accepted, as wel they might, beingpeaceable people with no reason to suspect anything. But once out in the open sea they were al sent to thebottom, a company of at least two hundred.4 ma fosse un'iniziativa di tutta la cittadinanza. Essi accettarono, desiderosi di rinsaldare la pace, e lontani da ogni sospetto. Ma quando furono al largo, li fecero affondare in numero non inferiore a duecento.
When Judas heard of the cruel fate of his countrymen, he issued his orders to his men5 Quando Giuda fu informato di questa crudeltà compiuta contro i suoi connazionali, diede ordine ai suoi uomini
and after invoking God, the just judge, he attacked his brothers' murderers. Under cover of dark heset fire to the port, burned the boats and put to the sword everyone who had taken refuge there.6 e, invocando Dio, giusto giudice, mosse contro gli assassini dei suoi fratelli e nella notte incendiò il porto, bruciò le navi e uccise di spada quanti vi si erano rifugiati.
As the town gates were closed, he withdrew, intending to come back and wipe out the wholecommunity of Joppa.7 Poi, dato che il luogo era sbarrato, abbandonò l'impresa con l'idea di tornare un'altra volta e sradicare tutta la cittadinanza di Giaffa.
But hearing that the people of Jamnia were planning to treat their resident Jews in the same way,8 Avendo poi appreso che anche i cittadini di Iamnia volevano usare lo stesso sistema con i Giudei che abitavano con loro,
he made a night attack on the Jamnites and fired the port with its fleet; the glow of the flames wasseen as far off as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.9 piombando di notte sui cittadini di Iamnia, incendiò il porto con la flotta, così che si vedeva il bagliore delle fiamme fino a Gerusalemme, che è distante duecentoquaranta stadi.
When they had left the town barely a mile behind them in their advance on Timotheus, Judas wasattacked by an Arab force of at least five thousand foot soldiers, with five hundred cavalry.10 Quando si furono allontanati di là per nove stadi, dirigendosi contro Timòteo, non meno di cinquemila Arabi con cinquecento cavalieri irruppero contro Giuda.
A fierce engagement fol owed, and with God's help Judas' men won the day; the defeated nomadsbegged Judas to offer them the right hand of friendship, and promised to surrender their herds and makethemselves general y useful to him.11 Ne nacque una zuffa furiosa, ma gli uomini di Giuda con l'aiuto di Dio ebbero la meglio. I nomadi invece, sopraffatti, supplicarono Giuda che stendesse loro la destra promettendo di cedergli bestiame e di aiutarlo in tutto il resto.
Realising that they might indeed prove valuable in many ways, Judas consented to make peace withthem and after an exchange of pledges the Arabs withdrew to their tents.12 Giuda, prevedendo che realmente gli sarebbero stati utili in molte cose, acconsentì a far la pace con loro ed essi, strette le destre, tornarono alle loro tende.
Judas also attacked a certain fortified town, closed by ramparts and inhabited by a medley of races;its name was Caspin.13 Attaccò anche una città difesa da contrafforti, circondata da mura e abitata da gente d'ogni stirpe, chiamata Casfin.
Confident in the strength of their wal s and their stock of provisions, the besieged adopted aninsolent attitude to Judas and his men, reinforcing their insults with blasphemies and profanity.14 Quelli di dentro, sicuri della solidità delle mura e delle riserve di viveri, si mostravano insolenti con gli uomini di Giuda, insultandoli, aggiungendo bestemmie e pronunciando frasi che non è lecito riferire.
But Judas and his men invoked the great Sovereign of the world who without battering-ram or siege-engine had overthrown Jericho in the days of Joshua; they then made a fierce assault on the wall.15 Ma gli uomini di Giuda, dopo aver invocato il grande Signore del mondo, il quale senza arieti e senza macchine ingegnose aveva fatto cadere Gèrico al tempo di Giosuè, assalirono furiosamente le mura.
By God's wil , having captured the town, they made such indescribable slaughter that the nearbylake, a quarter of a mile across, seemed fil ed to overflowing with blood.16 Presa la città per volere di Dio, fecero innumerevoli stragi, cosicché il lago adiacente, largo due stadi, sembrava pieno del sangue che vi colava dentro.
Ninety-five miles further on from there, they reached the Charax, in the country of Jews known asTubians.17 Allontanatisi di là settecentocinquanta stadi giunsero a Caraca, presso i Giudei chiamati Tubiani;
They did not find Timotheus himself in that neighbourhood; he had already left the district, havingachieved nothing apart from leaving a very strong garrison at one point.18 ma da quelle parti non trovarono Timòteo, il quale era già partito dalla zona, senza aver intrapreso alcuna azione, ma lasciando in un certo luogo un presidio molto forte.
Dositheus and Sosipater, two of the Maccabaean generals, marched out and destroyed the forceTimotheus had left behind in the fortress, amounting to more than ten thousand men.19 Dosìteo e Sosìpatro, due capitani del Maccabeo, in una sortita sterminarono gli uomini di Timòteo lasciati nella fortezza, che erano più di diecimila.
Maccabaeus himself divided his army into cohorts to which he assigned commanders, and thenhurried in pursuit of Timotheus, whose troops numbered one hundred and twenty thousand infantry and twothousand five hundred cavalry.20 Intanto il Maccabeo ordinò il suo esercito dividendolo in reparti, nominò questi al comando dei reparti e mosse contro Timòteo, il quale aveva con sé centoventimila fanti e duemilacinquecento cavalieri.
Timotheus' first move on learning of Judas' advance was to send away the women and children andthe rest of the baggage train to the place called the Carnaim, since it was an impregnable position, difficult ofaccess owing to the narrowness of al the approaches.21 Quando Timòteo seppe dell'arrivo di Giuda, mandò avanti le donne, i fanciulli e tutto il bagaglio nel luogo chiamato Carnion: era questa una posizione inespugnabile e inaccessibile per la strettezza di tutti i passaggi.
Judas' cohort came into sight first. The enemy, seized with fright and panic-stricken by themanifestation of the Al -seeing, began to flee, one running this way, one running that, often wounding oneanother in consequence and running on the points of one another's swords.22 All'apparire del primo reparto di Giuda, si diffuse tra i nemici il panico e il terrore perché si verificò contro di loro l'apparizione di colui che dall'alto tutto vede, e perciò cominciarono a fuggire precipitandosi chi da una parte chi dall'altra, cosicché spesso erano colpiti dai propri compagni e trafitti dalle punte delle loro spade.
Judas pursued them with a wil , cutting the sinners to pieces and kil ing something like thirtythousand men.23 Giuda dirigeva l'inseguimento con ogni energia, trafiggendo quegli empi: ne sterminò circa trentamila.
Timotheus himself, having fal en into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater and their men, verycraftily pleaded with them to let him go with his life, on the grounds that he had the relatives and even thebrothers of many of them in his power, and that these could otherwise expect short shrift.24 Lo stesso Timòteo, caduto in mano agli uomini di Dosìteo e Sosìpatro, supplicava con molta astuzia di essere lasciato sano e salvo, perché tratteneva come ostaggi i genitori di molti di loro e di alcuni i fratelli ai quali sarebbe capitato di essere trattati senza riguardo.
When at long last he convinced them that he would honour his promise and return these people safeand sound, they let him go for the sake of saving their brothers.25 Avendo egli con molti discorsi prestato solenne promessa di restituire incolumi gli ostaggi, lo lasciarono libero per la salvezza dei propri fratelli.
Reaching the Carnaim and the Atargateion, Judas slaughtered twenty-five thousand men.26 Giuda mosse poi contro Carnion e l'Atergatéo e uccise venticinquemila uomini.
Having defeated and destroyed them, he led his army against Ephron, a fortified town, whereLysanias was living. Stalwart young men drawn up outside the walls offered vigorous resistance, while insidethere were quantities of war-engines and missiles in reserve.27 Dopo la sconfitta e lo sterminio di questi, marciò contro la fortezza di Efron, nella quale era stanziato Lisia con una moltitudine di gente di ogni razza; davanti alle mura erano schierati i giovani più forti e combattevano vigorosamente, mentre nella città stavano pronte molte riserve di macchine e di proiettili.
But the Jews, having invoked the Sovereign who by his power shatters enemies' defences, gainedcontrol of the town and cut down nearly twenty-five thousand of the people inside.28 Avendo invocato il Signore che distrugge con la sua potenza le forze dei nemici, i Giudei fecero cadere la città nelle proprie mani e uccisero venticinquemila di coloro che vi stavano dentro.
Moving off from there, they pressed on to Scythopolis,29 Ritornati di là, mossero verso Beisan, che dista seicento stadi da Gerusalemme.
seventy-five miles from Jerusalem. But as the Jews who had settled there assured Judas that thepeople of Scythopolis had always treated them wel and had been particularly kind to them when times were attheir worst,30 Ma i Giudei che vi abitavano testimoniarono che i cittadini di Beisan avevano dimostrato loro benevolenza e buona comprensione nel tempo della sventura
he and his men thanked them and urged them to extend the same friendship to his race in the future. They reached Jerusalem shortly before the feast of Weeks.31 e questi li ringraziarono e li esortarono ad essere ben disposti anche in seguito verso il loro popolo. Poi si recarono a Gerusalemme nell'imminenza della festa delle settimane.
After Pentecost, as it is cal ed, they marched against Gorgias, the general commanding Idumaea.32 Dopo questa festa, chiamata Pentecoste, mossero contro Gorgia, stratega dell'Idumea.
He came out at the head of three thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry;33 Questi avanzò con tremila fanti e quattrocento cavalieri.
in the course of the ensuing battle a few Jews lost their lives.34 Schieratisi in combattimento, caddero un piccolo numero di Giudei.
A man called Dositheus, a horseman of the Tubian contingent, a valiant man, overpowered Gorgiasand, gripping him by the cloak, was forcibly dragging him along, intending to take the accursed man alive, butone of the Thracian cavalry, hurling himself on Dositheus, slashed his shoulder, and Gorgias escaped to Marisa.35 Un certo Dosìteo, degli uomini di Bacènore, abile nel cavalcare e valoroso, si attaccò a Gorgia e, afferratolo per la clamide, lo trascinava a gran forza volendo prendere vivo quello scellerato; ma uno dei cavalieri traci si gettò su di lui tagliandogli la spalla e Gorgia poté fuggire a Maresa.
Meanwhile, since Esdrias and his men had been fighting for a long time and were exhausted, Judascal ed on the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in battle.36 Poiché gli uomini di Esdrin combattevano da lungo tempo ed erano stanchi, Giuda supplicò il Signore che si mostrasse loro alleato e guida nella battaglia.
Then, chanting the battle cry and hymns at the top of his voice in his ancestral tongue, by a surpriseattack he routed Gorgias' troops.37 Poi, intonato nella lingua paterna il grido di guerra che si accompagnava agli inni, diede un assalto improvviso alle truppe di Gorgia e le mise in fuga.
Judas then ral ied his army and moved on to the town of Adul am where, as it was the seventh day ofthe week, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the Sabbath.38 Giuda poi radunò l'esercito e venne alla città di Odollam; poiché si compiva la settimana, si purificarono secondo l'uso e vi passarono il sabato.
Next day, they came to find Judas (since the necessity was by now urgent) to have the bodies of thefal en taken up and laid to rest among their relatives in their ancestral tombs.39 Il giorno dopo, quando ormai la cosa era diventata necessaria, gli uomini di Giuda andarono a raccogliere i cadaveri per deporli con i loro parenti nei sepolcri di famiglia.
But when they found on each of the dead men, under their tunics, objects dedicated to the idols ofJamnia, which the Law prohibits to Jews, it became clear to everyone that this was why these men had lost theirlives.40 Ma trovarono sotto la tunica di ciascun morto oggetti sacri agli idoli di Iamnia, che la legge proibisce ai Giudei; fu perciò a tutti chiaro il motivo per cui costoro erano caduti.
Al then blessed the ways of the Lord, the upright judge who brings hidden things to light,41 Perciò tutti, benedicendo l'operato di Dio, giusto giudice che rende palesi le cose occulte,
and gave themselves to prayer, begging that the sin committed might be completely forgiven. Next, the valiant Judas urged the soldiers to keep themselves free from al sin, having seen with their own eyes theeffects of the sin of those who had fal en;42 ricorsero alla preghiera, supplicando che il peccato commesso fosse pienamente perdonato. Il nobile Giuda esortò tutti quelli del popolo a conservarsi senza peccati, avendo visto con i propri occhi quanto era avvenuto per il peccato dei caduti.
after this he took a col ection from them individual y, amounting to nearly two thousand drachmas, and sent it to Jerusalem to have a sacrifice for sin offered, an action altogether fine and noble, prompted by hisbelief in the resurrection.43 Poi fatta una colletta, con tanto a testa, per circa duemila dramme d'argento, le inviò a Gerusalemme perché fosse offerto un sacrificio espiatorio, agendo così in modo molto buono e nobile, suggerito dal pensiero della risurrezione.
For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to prayfor the dead,44 Perché se non avesse avuto ferma fiducia che i caduti sarebbero risuscitati, sarebbe stato superfluo e vano pregare per i morti.
whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, thethought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might bereleased from their sin.45 Ma se egli considerava la magnifica ricompensa riservata a coloro che si addormentano nella morte con sentimenti di pietà, la sua considerazione era santa e devota. Perciò egli fece offrire il sacrificio espiatorio per i morti, perché fossero assolti dal peccato.
