NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight1 Gorgia prese allora cinquemila uomini e mille cavalli scelti e si levò il campo di notte
with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.2 per sorprendere il campo dei Giudei e annientarli all'improvviso; gli uomini dell'Acra gli facevano da guida.
Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,3 Ma Giuda lo venne a sapere e mosse anche lui con i suoi valorosi per assalire le forze del re che sostavano in Emmaus,
while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.4 mentre i soldati erano ancora dispersi fuori del campo.
Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'5 Gorgia giunse al campo di Giuda di notte e non vi trovò nessuno; li andava cercando sui monti dicendo: "Costoro ci sfuggono".
First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.6 Fattosi giorno, Giuda apparve nella pianura con tremila uomini; non avevano però né corazze né spade come avrebbero voluto.
They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.7 Videro l'accampamento dei pagani difeso e fortificato e la cavalleria disposta intorno e tutti esperti nella guerra.
Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.8 Ma Giuda disse ai suoi uomini: "Non temete il loro numero, né abbiate paura dei loro assalti;
Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.9 ricordate come i nostri padri furono salvati nel Mare Rosso, quando il faraone li inseguiva con l'esercito.
And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;10 Alziamo la nostra voce al Cielo, perché ci usi benevolenza e si ricordi dell'alleanza con i nostri padri e voglia sconfiggere questo schieramento davanti a noi oggi;
then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'11 si accorgeranno tutti i popoli che c'è uno che riscatta e salva Israele".
The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,12 Gli stranieri alzarono gli occhi e videro che quelli venivano loro incontro;
came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet13 così uscirono dagli accampamenti per dar battaglia. Gli uomini di Giuda diedero fiato alle trombe
and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain14 e attaccarono. I pagani furono sconfitti e fuggirono verso la pianura,
and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.15 ma quelli che erano più indietro caddero tutti uccisi di spada. Li inseguirono fino a Ghezer e fino alle pianure dell'Idumea e di Asdod e di Iamnia; ne furono uccisi circa tremila.
Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men16 Quando Giuda e i suoi armati tornarono dal loro inseguimento,
and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.17 egli disse alla sua gente: "Non siate avidi delle spoglie, perché ci attende ancora la battaglia. Gorgia e il suo esercito è sul monte vicino a noi;
Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'18 ora voi state pronti ad opporvi ai nemici e a combatterli; in seguito farete tranquillamente bottino".
The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.19 Aveva appena finito di parlare, quando apparve un reparto che spiava dal monte.
Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-20 Avevano visto infatti che i loro erano stati sconfitti e gli altri incendiavano il campo: il fumo che si scorgeva segnalava l'accaduto.
they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,21 Ed essi a quello spettacolo si sgomentarono grandemente; vedendo inoltre giù nella pianura lo schieramento di Giuda pronto all'attacco,
they al fled into Philistine territory.22 fuggirono tutti nel territorio dei Filistei.
Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.23 Allora Giuda ritornò a depredare il campo e raccolsero oro e argento in quantità e stoffe tinte di porpora viola e porpora marina e grandi ricchezze.
On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'24 Di ritorno cantavano e innalzavano benedizioni al cielo "'perché egli è buono e la sua grazia dura sempre'".
That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.25 Fu quello un giorno di grande liberazione in Israele.
Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.26 Quanti degli stranieri erano scampati, presentandosi a Lisia, gli narrarono tutto quello che era accaduto.
The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.27 Egli sentendo ciò, fu preso da turbamento e scoraggiamento, perché le cose in Israele non erano andate come egli voleva e l'esito non era stato secondo gli ordini del re.
The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.28 Perciò l'anno dopo mise insieme sessantamila uomini scelti e cinquemila cavalli per combattere contro di loro.
They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.29 Vennero nell'Idumea e si accamparono in Bet-Zur. Giuda mosse contro di essi con diecimila uomini.
When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.30 Quando vide l'imponente accampamento, innalzò questa preghiera: "Benedetto sei tu, o salvatore d'Israele, tu che hai fiaccato l'impeto del potente per mezzo del tuo servo Davide e hai fatto cadere l'esercito degli stranieri nelle mani di Giònata, figlio di Saul e del suo scudiero;
Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.31 fa' cadere ancora nello stesso modo questo esercito nelle mani di Israele tuo popolo e fa' ricadere l'obbrobrio sul loro esercito e sulla loro cavalleria;
Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.32 infondi in loro timore e spezza l'audacia della loro forza, siano travolti nella loro rovina.
Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'33 Abbattili con la spada dei tuoi devoti; ti lodino con canti tutti coloro che riconoscono il tuo nome".
The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.34 Poi sferrarono l'attacco da una parte e dall'altra e caddero davanti ai Giudei circa cinquemila uomini del campo di Lisia.
Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.35 Vedendo Lisia lo scompiglio delle sue file, mentre alle schiere di Giuda cresceva il coraggio ed erano pronti a vivere o a morire gloriosamente, se ne tornò in Antiochia dove assoldò mercenari in maggior numero per venire di nuovo in Giudea.
Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'36 Giuda intanto e i suoi fratelli dissero: "Ecco sono stati sconfitti i nostri nemici: andiamo a purificare il santuario e a riconsacrarlo".
So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.37 Così si radunò tutto l'esercito e salirono al monte Sion.
There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.38 Trovarono il santuario desolato, l'altare profanato, le porte arse e cresciute le erbe nei cortili come in un luogo selvatico o montuoso, e gli appartamenti sacri in rovina.
They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.39 Allora si stracciarono le vesti, fecero grande pianto, si cosparsero di cenere,
They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.40 si prostrarono con la faccia a terra, fecero dare i segnali con le trombe e alzarono grida al Cielo.
Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.41 Giuda ordinò ai suoi uomini di tenere impegnati quelli dell'Acra, finché non avesse purificato il santuario.
Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law42 Poi scelse sacerdoti incensurati, osservanti della legge,
to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.43 i quali purificarono il santuario e portarono le pietre profanate in luogo immondo.
They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,44 Tennero consiglio per decidere che cosa fare circa l'altare degli olocausti, che era stato profanato.
and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it45 Vennero nella felice determinazione di demolirlo, perché non fosse loro di vergogna, essendo stato profanato dai pagani. Demolirono dunque l'altare
and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.46 e riposero le pietre sul monte del tempio in luogo conveniente finché fosse comparso un profeta a decidere di esse.
They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.47 Poi presero pietre grezze secondo la legge ed edificarono un altare nuovo come quello di prima;
They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.48 restaurarono il santuario e consacrarono l'interno del tempio e i cortili;
They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.49 rifecero gli arredi sacri e collocarono il candelabro e l'altare degli incensi e la tavola nel tempio.
They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.50 Poi bruciarono incenso sull'altare e accesero sul candelabro le lampade che splendettero nel tempio.
They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.51 Posero ancora i pani sulla tavola e stesero le cortine. Così portarono a termine le opere intraprese.
On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn52 Si radunarono il mattino del venticinque del nono mese, cioè il mese di Casleu, nell'anno centoquarantotto,
and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.53 e offrirono il sacrificio secondo la legge sull'altare degli olocausti che avevano rinnovato.
The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.54 Nella stessa stagione e nello stesso giorno in cui l'avevano profanato i pagani, fu riconsacrato fra canti e suoni di cetre e arpe e cembali.
The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.55 Tutto il popolo si prostrò con la faccia a terra e adorarono e benedissero il Cielo che era stato loro propizio.
For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.56 Celebrarono la dedicazione dell'altare per otto giorni e offrirono olocausti con gioia e sacrificarono vittime di ringraziamento e di lode.
They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.57 Poi ornarono la facciata del tempio con corone d'oro e piccoli scudi. Rifecero i portoni e le camere e vi misero le porte.
There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.58 Vi fu gioia molto grande in mezzo al popolo, perché era stata cancellata la vergogna dei pagani.
Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.59 Poi Giuda e i suoi fratelli e tutta l'assemblea d'Israele stabilirono che si celebrassero i giorni della dedicazione dell'altare nella loro ricorrenza, ogni anno, per otto giorni, cominciando dal venticinque del mese di Casleu, con gioia e letizia.
They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.60 Edificarono in quel tempo intorno al monte Sion mura alte e torri solide, perché i pagani non tornassero a calpestarlo come avevano fatto la prima volta.
Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.61 Vi stabilì un contingente per presidiarlo e fortificò il presidio di Bet-Zur perché il popolo avesse una difesa contro l'Idumea.
