NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
About then, Mattathias son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the line of Joarib, left Jerusalem andsettled in Modein.1 In quei giorni Mattatia figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Simone, sacerdote della stirpe di Ioarìb, partì da Gerusalemme e venne a stabilirsi a Modin.
He had five sons, John known as Gaddi,2 Egli aveva cinque figli: Giovanni chiamato anche Gaddi,
Simon cal ed Thassi,3 Simeone chiamato Tassi,
Judas cal ed Maccabaeus,4 Giuda chiamato Maccabeo,
Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, and Jonathan cal ed Apphus.5 Eleàzaro chiamato Auaran, Giònata chiamato Affus.
When he saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem,6 Viste le empietà che si commettevano in Giuda e Gerusalemme,
he said, 'Alas that I should have been born to witness the ruin of my people and the ruin of the HolyCity, and to sit by while she is delivered over to her enemies, and the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners.7 disse: "Ohimè! perché mai sono nato per vedere lo strazio del mio popolo e lo strazio della città santa e debbo sedere qui mentre essa è in balìa dei nemici e il santuario in mano agli stranieri?

'Her Temple has become like someone of no repute,8 Il suo tempio è diventato come un uomo ignobile,
the vessels that were her glory have been carried off as booty, her babies have been slaughtered inher streets, her young men by the enemy's sword.9 gli ornamenti della sua gloria sono stati portati
via come preda,
sono stati sgozzati i suoi bambini nelle piazze
e i giovinetti dalla spada nemica.
Is there a nation that has not claimed a share of her royal prerogatives, that has not taken some of herspoils?10 Qual popolo non ha invaso il suo regno
e non si è impadronito delle sue spoglie?
Al her ornaments have been snatched from her, her former freedom has become slavery.11 Ogni ornamento le è stato strappato,
da padrona è diventata schiava.
See how the Holy Place, our beauty, our glory, is now laid waste, see how the gentiles have profanedit!12 Ecco, le nostre cose sante,
la nostra bellezza, la nostra gloria
sono state devastate,
le hanno profanate i pagani.
What have we left to live for?'13 Perché vivere ancora?".

Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and observed deep mourning.14 Mattatia e i suoi figli si stracciarono le vesti, si vestirono di sacco e si misero in grande lutto.
The king's commissioners who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein for thesacrifices.15 Ora vennero nella città di Modin i messaggeri del re, incaricati di costringere all'apostasia e a far sacrificare.
Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart.16 Molti Israeliti andarono da loro; invece Mattatia e i suoi figli si raccolsero in disparte.
The king's commissioners then addressed Mattathias as fol ows, 'You are a respected leader, a greatman in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you.17 I messaggeri del re si rivolsero a Mattatia e gli dissero: "Tu sei uomo autorevole e stimato e grande in questa città e sei sostenuto da figli e fratelli;
Be the first to step forward and conform to the king's decree, as all the nations have done, and theleaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shal be reckoned among the Friends of theKing, you and your sons wil be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.'18 su, fatti avanti per primo e adempi il comando del re, come hanno fatto tutti i popoli e gli uomini di Giuda e quelli rimasti in Gerusalemme; così passerai tu e i tuoi figli nel numero degli amici del re e tu e i tuoi figli avrete in premio oro e argento e doni in quantità".
Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, 'Even if every nation living in the king's dominions obeys him,each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees,19 Ma Mattatia rispose a gran voce: "Anche se tutti i popoli nei domini del re lo ascolteranno e ognuno si staccherà dal culto dei suoi padri e vorranno tutti aderire alle sue richieste,
I, my sons and my brothers will stil fol ow the covenant of our ancestors.20 io, i miei figli e i miei fratelli cammineremo nell'alleanza dei nostri padri;
May Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances.21 ci guardi il Signore dall'abbandonare la legge e le tradizioni;
As for the king's orders, we will not fol ow them: we shal not swerve from our own religion either toright or to left.'22 non ascolteremo gli ordini del re per deviare dalla nostra religione a destra o a sinistra".
As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of al to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modeinas the royal edict required.23 Terminate queste parole, si avvicinò un Giudeo alla vista di tutti per sacrificare sull'altare in Modin secondo il decreto del re.
When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to hislegitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar.24 Ciò vedendo Mattatia arse di zelo; fremettero le sue viscere ed egli ribollì di giusto sdegno. Fattosi avanti di corsa, lo uccise sull'altare;
At the same time he killed the king's commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and toredown the altar.25 uccise nel medesimo tempo il messaggero del re, che costringeva a sacrificare, e distrusse l'altare.
In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas had against Zimri son of Salu.26 Egli agiva per zelo verso la legge come aveva fatto Pincas con Zambri figlio di Salom.
Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, 'Let everyone who has anyzeal for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.'27 La voce di Mattatia tuonò nella città: "Chiunque ha zelo per la legge e vuol difendere l'alleanza mi segua!".
Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving al their possessions behind in the town.28 Fuggì con i suoi figli tra i monti, abbandonando in città quanto avevano.
Many people who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there,29 Allora molti che ricercavano la giustizia e il diritto scesero per dimorare nel deserto
taking with them their sons, their wives and their cattle, so oppressive had their sufferings become.30 con i loro figli, le loro mogli e i greggi, perché si erano addensati i mali sopra di essi.
Word was brought to the royal officials and forces stationed in Jerusalem, in the City of David, thatthose who had repudiated the king's edict had gone down to the hiding places in the desert.31 Fu riferito agli uomini del re e alle milizie che stavano in Gerusalemme, nella città di Davide, che si erano raccolti laggiù in luoghi nascosti del deserto uomini che avevano stracciato l'editto del re.
A strong detachment went after them, and when it came up with them ranged itself against them inbattle formation, preparing to attack them on the Sabbath day,32 Molti corsero ad inseguirli, li raggiunsero, si accamparono di fronte a loro e si prepararono a dar battaglia in giorno di sabato.
and said, 'Enough of this! Come out and do as the king orders and you will be spared.'33 Dicevano loro: "Basta ormai; uscite, obbedite ai comandi del re e avrete salva la vita".
The others, however, replied, 'We refuse to come out, and we wil not obey the king's orders andprofane the Sabbath day.'34 Ma quelli risposero: "Non usciremo, né seguiremo gli ordini del re, profanando il giorno del sabato".
The royal forces at once went into action,35 Quelli si precipitarono all'assalto contro di loro.
but the others offered no opposition; not a stone was thrown, there was no barricading of the hidingplaces.36 Ma essi non risposero, né lanciarono pietra, né ostruirono i nascondigli,
They only said, 'Let us all die innocent; let heaven and earth bear witness that you are massacring uswith no pretence of justice.'37 protestando: "Moriamo tutti nella nostra innocenza. Testimoniano per noi il cielo e la terra che ci fate morire ingiustamente".
The attack was pressed home on the Sabbath itself, and they were slaughtered, with their wives andchildren and cattle, to the number of one thousand persons.38 Così quelli mossero contro di loro a battaglia di sabato: essi morirono con le mogli e i figli e i loro greggi, in numero di circa mille persone.
When the news reached Mattathias and his friends, they mourned them bitterly39 Quando Mattatia e i suoi amici lo seppero, ne fecero gran pianto.
and said to one another, 'If we al do as our brothers have done, and refuse to fight the gentiles for ourlives and institutions, they wil only destroy us the sooner from the earth.'40 Poi dissero tra di loro: "Se faremo tutti come hanno fatto i nostri fratelli e non combatteremo contro i pagani per la nostra vita e per le nostre leggi, ci faranno sparire in breve dalla terra".
So then and there they came to this decision, 'If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath day, whoever hemay be, we shall resist him; we must not al be kil ed, as our brothers were in the hiding places.'41 Presero in quel giorno questa decisione: "Noi combatteremo contro chiunque venga a darci battaglia in giorno di sabato e non moriremo tutti come sono morti i nostri fratelli nei nascondigli".
Soon they were joined by the Hasidaean party, stout fighting men of Israel, each one a volunteer onthe side of the Law.42 In quel tempo si unì con loro un gruppo degli Asidei, i forti d'Israele, e quanti volevano mettersi a disposizione della legge;
Al the refugees from the persecution ral ied to them, giving them added support.43 inoltre quanti fuggivano davanti alle sventure si univano a loro e divenivano loro rinforzo.
They organised themselves into an armed force, striking down the sinners in their anger, and therenegades in their fury, and those who escaped them fled to the gentiles for safety.44 Così organizzarono un contingente di forze e percossero con ira i peccatori e gli uomini empi con furore; gli scampati fuggirono tra i pagani per salvarsi.
Mattathias and his friends made a tour, overthrowing the altars45 Mattatia poi e i suoi amici andarono in giro a demolire gli altari
and forcibly circumcising al the boys they found uncircumcised in the territories of Israel.46 e fecero circoncidere a forza tutti i bambini non circoncisi che trovarono nel territorio d'Israele;
They hunted down the upstarts and managed their campaign to good effect.47 non diedero tregua agli orgogliosi e l'impresa ebbe buona riuscita nelle loro mani;
They wrested the Law out of the control of the gentiles and the kings and reduced the sinners toimpotence.48 difesero la legge dalla prepotenza dei popoli e dei re e non la diedero vinta ai peccatori.
As the days of Mattathias were drawing to a close, he said to his sons, 'Arrogance and outrage arenow in the ascendant; it is a period of turmoil and bitter hatred.49 Intanto si avvicinava per Mattatia l'ora della morte ed egli disse ai figli: "Ora domina la superbia e l'ingiustizia, è il tempo della distruzione e dell'ira rabbiosa.
This is the time, my children, for you to have a burning zeal for the Law and to give your lives for thecovenant of our ancestors.50 Ora, figli, mostrate zelo per la legge e date la vostra vita per l'alleanza dei nostri padri.
Remember the deeds performed by our ancestors, each in his generation, and you wil win greathonour and everlasting renown.51 Ricordate le gesta compiute dai nostri padri ai loro tempi e ne trarrete gloria insigne e nome eterno.
Was not Abraham tested and found faithful, was that not considered as justifying him?52 Abramo non fu trovato forse fedele nella tentazione e non gli fu ciò accreditato a giustizia?
Joseph in the time of his distress maintained the Law, and so became lord of Egypt.53 Giuseppe nell'ora dell'oppressione osservò il precetto e divenne signore dell'Egitto.
Phinehas, our father, in return for his burning zeal, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood.54 Pincas nostro padre per lo zelo dimostrato conseguì l'alleanza del sacerdozio perenne.
Joshua, for carrying out his task, became judge of Israel.55 Giosuè, obbedendo alla divina parola, divenne giudice in Israele.
Caleb, for his testimony before the assembled people, received an inheritance in the land.56 Caleb, testimoniando nell'adunanza, ebbe in sorte parte del nostro paese.
David for his generous heart inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom.57 Davide per la sua pietà ottenne il trono del regno per sempre.
Elijah for his consuming fervour for the Law was caught up to heaven itself.58 Elia, poiché aveva dimostrato zelo ardente per la legge, fu assunto in cielo.
Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their fidelity, were saved from the flame.59 Anania, Azaria e Misaele per la loro fede furono salvati dalla fiamma.
Daniel for his singleness of heart was rescued from the lion's jaws.60 Daniele nella sua innocenza fu sottratto alle fauci dei leoni.
Know then that, generation after generation, no one who hopes in him will be overcome.61 Così, di seguito, considerate di generazione in generazione che quanti hanno fiducia in lui non soccombono.
Do not fear the threats of the sinner, al his brave show must come to the dunghill and the worms.62 Non abbiate paura delle parole dell'empio, perché la sua gloria andrà a finire ai rifiuti e ai vermi;
Exalted today, tomorrow he is nowhere to be found, for he has returned to the dust he came from andhis scheming is brought to nothing.63 oggi è esaltato, domani non si trova più, perché ritorna alla sua polvere e i suoi calcoli falliscono.
My children, be resolute and courageous for the Law, for it wil bring you glory.64 Figli, siate valorosi e forti nella legge, perché in questa sarete glorificati.
'Here is your brother Simeon, I know he is a man of sound judgement. Listen to him al your lives; lethim take your father's place.65 Ecco qui vostro fratello Simone, che io so uomo saggio: ascoltatelo sempre, egli sarà vostro padre.
Judas Maccabaeus, strong and brave from his youth, let him be your general and conduct the waragainst the gentiles.66 Giuda Maccabeo, forte guerriero dalla sua gioventù, sarà capo del vostro esercito e condurrà la battaglia contro i pagani.
The rest of you are to enrol in your ranks al those who keep the Law, and to assure the vengeance ofyour people.67 Voi, dunque, radunate intorno a voi quanti praticano la legge e vendicate il vostro popolo;
Pay back the gentiles to the ful , and hold fast to the ordinance of the Law.'68 rendete il meritato castigo ai pagani e applicatevi all'ordinamento della legge".
Then he blessed them and was joined to his ancestors.69 Poi li benedisse e si riunì ai suoi padri.
He died in the year 146 and was buried in his ancestral tomb at Modein, and al Israel mourned himdeeply.70 Morì nell'anno centoquarantasei e fu sepolto nella tomba dei suoi padri in Modin; tutto Israele fece grande pianto su di lui.
