1 In the year 172, King Demetrius assembled his forces and marched into Media to raise help for thefight against Trypho.1 Nell'anno centosettantadue il re Demetrio radunò le sue milizie e partì per la Media per raccogliere rinforzi e combattere Trifone.
2 When Arsaces king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had entered his territory, he sent one ofhis generals to capture him alive.2 Ma Àrsace, re della Persia e della Media, appena seppe che Demetrio era entrato nel suo territorio, mandò uno dei suoi generali per catturarlo vivo.
3 The general defeated the army of Demetrius, seized him and brought him to Arsaces, who imprisonedhim.3 Costui venne, batté l'esercito di Demetrio, lo catturò e lo condusse ad Àrsace e questi lo mise in carcere.

4 The country was at peace throughout the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation and theywere wel pleased with his authority, as with his magnificence, throughout his life.4 Ebbe pace la terra di Giuda per tutta la vita di
Simone;
egli cercò il bene della sua gente
e ad essi fu gradito il suo potere
e la sua gloria per tutti i suoi giorni.
5 To crown his titles to glory, he took Joppa and made it a harbour, gaining access to the MediterraneanIsles.5 In aggiunta a tutte le sue glorie
egli prese Giaffa per farne un porto
e aprì un accesso alle isole del mare.
6 He enlarged the frontiers of his nation, keeping his mastery over the homeland,6 Ampliò i confini del suo popolo
e riconquistò la regione.
7 resettling a host of captives. He conquered Gezer, Beth-Zur and the Citadel, ridding them of everyimpurity, and no one could resist him.7 Raccolse una turba di prigionieri
e s'impadronì di Ghezer, di Bet-Zur e dell'Acra;
8 The people farmed their land in peace; the land gave its produce, the trees of the plain their fruit.8 spazzò via da essa le immondezze,
e nessuno gli si oppose.
In pace si diedero a coltivare la loro terra;
il suolo dava i suoi prodotti
e gli alberi della campagna i loro frutti.
9 The elders sat at ease in the squares, all their talk was of their prosperity; the young men woresplendid armour.9 I vecchi sedevano nelle piazze,
tutti s'interessavano al bene
i giovani indossavano splendide vesti
e armature di guerra.
10 He kept the towns supplied with provisions and furnished with fortifications, until his fame resoundedto the ends of the earth.10 Alle città fornì vettovaglie,
e le munì con mezzi di difesa;
così divenne celebre il suo nome
e la sua gloria fino all'estremità della terra.
11 He established peace in the land, and Israel knew great joy.11 Fece regnare sul paese la pace
e Israele gioì di grande letizia.
12 Each man sat under his own vine and his own fig tree, and there was no one to make them afraid.12 Ognuno sedeva sotto la sua vite
e sotto il suo fico
e nessuno incuteva loro timore.
13 No enemy was left in the land to fight them, the very kings of those times had been crushed.13 Scomparve dal paese chi li avversava
e i re andarono in rovina in quei giorni.
14 He encouraged the afflicted members of his people, suppressing every wicked man and renegade.He strove to observe the Law,14 Confortò tutti i derelitti nel suo popolo;
ricercò la legge ed eliminò ogni iniquo e maligno.
15 and gave new splendour to the Temple, enriching it with many sacred vessels.15 Diede splendore al tempio
e lo rifornì di tutti gli arredi.

16 When it became known in Rome and as far as Sparta that Jonathan was dead, people were deeplygrieved.16 Si sparse fino a Roma e a Sparta la notizia che era morto Giònata e se ne rattristarono molto.
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon had succeeded him as high priest and was masterof the country and the cities in it,17 Tuttavia, quando seppero che Simone suo fratello era divenuto sommo sacerdote al suo posto e continuava a mantenere il potere sulla regione e sulle città,
18 they wrote to him on bronze tablets to renew the treaty of friendship and al iance which they hadmade with his brothers, Judas and Jonathan,18 scrissero a lui su tavolette di bronzo per rinnovare con lui l'amicizia e l'alleanza che avevano concluso con Giuda e Giònata suoi fratelli.
19 and the document was read out before the assembly in Jerusalem.19 I messaggi furono letti davanti all'adunanza in Gerusalemme.
20 This is the copy of the letter sent by the Spartans: 'The rulers and the city of Sparta, to Simon thehigh priest and to the elders and priests and the rest of the people of the Jews, greetings.20 Questa è la copia della lettera che inviarono gli Spartani:
"Le autorità e la cittadinanza degli Spartani a Simone sommo sacerdote, agli anziani, ai sacerdoti e al resto del popolo giudaico, loro fratelli, salute.
21 'The ambassadors whom you sent to our people have informed us of your glory and prosperity, andwe are delighted with their visit.21 I messaggeri inviati al nostro popolo ci hanno riferito intorno alla vostra gloria e al vostro onore e noi ci siamo rallegrati per il loro arrivo.
22 We have recorded their declarations in the minutes of our public assemblies, as fol ows, "Numeniusson of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, ambassadors of the Jews, came to us to renew their friendshipwith us.22 Abbiamo registrato le loro dichiarazioni negli atti pubblici, in questi termini: Numenio, figlio di Antioco, e Antìpatro, figlio di Giàsone, messaggeri dei Giudei, sono giunti presso di noi per rinnovare l'amicizia con noi.
23 And it was the people's pleasure to receive these personages with honour and to deposit a copy oftheir statements in the public archives, so that the people of Sparta might preserve a record of them. A copy wasalso made for Simon the high priest." '23 È piaciuto al popolo di ricevere questi uomini con ogni onore e di inserire il testo del loro discorso nei registri a disposizione del pubblico, perché il popolo degli Spartani ne mantenga il ricordo".
24 After this, Simon sent Numenius to Rome as the bearer of a large golden shield weighing a thousandmina, to confirm the alliance with them.24 Successivamente Simone mandò a Roma Numenio con un grande scudo d'oro, del peso di mille mine, per concludere l'alleanza con loro.

25 When these events were reported to our people, they said, 'What mark of appreciation shal we giveto Simon and his sons?25 Quando il popolo seppe queste cose, disse: "Quale contraccambio daremo a Simone e ai suoi figli?
26 He stood firm, he and his brothers and his father's house: he fought off the enemies of Israel andsecured its freedom.'
27 This is a copy of the text: 'The eighteenth of Elul, in the year 172, being the third year of Simon,eminent high priest:27 Questo è il testo dell'iscrizione:
"Il diciotto di Elul dell'anno centosettantadue, che è il terzo anno di Simone sommo sacerdote, in Asaramel,
28 'In Asaramel, in the Grand Assembly of priests and people, of princes of the nation and of elders ofthe country: 'We are acquainted with the matters fol owing:28 nella grande assemblea dei sacerdoti e del popolo, dei capi della nazione e degli anziani della regione ci è stato reso noto:
29 'When there was almost incessant fighting in the country Simon, son of Mattathias, a priest of theline of Joarib, and his brothers courted danger and withstood their nation's enemies to safeguard the integrity oftheir sanctuary and of the Law, and so brought their nation great glory;29 Poiché più volte erano sorte guerre nel paese, Simone, figlio di Mattatia, sacerdote della stirpe di Ioarìb, e i suoi fratelli si gettarono nella mischia e si opposero agli avversari del loro popolo, perché restassero incolumi il santuario e la legge, e arrecarono gloria grande al loro popolo.
30 'For when, Jonathan having ral ied his nation and become its high priest and having then beengathered to his ancestors,30 Giònata riunì la sua nazione e ne divenne il sommo sacerdote, poi andò a raggiungere i suoi antenati.
31 the enemy planned to invade the country, intending to devastate their territory and to lay hands ontheir sanctuary,31 I loro nemici vollero invadere il loro paese e stendere la mano contro il santuario.
32 Simon next came forward to fight for his nation: spending much of his personal wealth on arming hisnation's fighting men and on providing their pay;32 Simone allora si oppose e si batté per il suo popolo e spese molto del suo per dotare di armi le milizie della sua nazione e assegnare loro un salario.
33 fortifying the towns of Judaea, as wel as Beth-Zur on the Judaean frontier where the enemy arsenalhad formerly been, and stationing in it a garrison of Jewish soldiers;33 Inoltre fortificò le città della Giudea e Bet-Zur nel territorio della Giudea, dove prima c'era la roccaforte dei nemici, e vi pose un presidio di soldati giudei.
34 fortifying Joppa on the coast, and Gezer on the borders of Azotus, a place formerly inhabited by theenemy, founding a Jewish colony there, and providing the settlers with everything they needed to set them ontheir feet;34 Fortificò Giaffa, situata sul mare, e Ghezer presso i confini di Asdòd, nelle quali prima risiedevano i nemici, e vi impiantò i Giudei e provvide in esse quanto era necessario al loro sostentamento.
35 'In consequence of which, the people, aware of Simon's loyalty and of the glory which he wasdetermined to win for his nation, have made him their ethnarch and high priest, for all his services and for theintegrity and loyalty which he has shown towards his nation, and for having by every means sought to enhancehis people's power;35 Il popolo ammirò la fede di Simone e la gloria che egli si proponeva di procurare al suo popolo; lo costituirono loro capo e sommo sacerdote per queste sue imprese e per la giustizia e la fede che egli aveva conservate al suo popolo e perché aveva cercato con ogni mezzo di elevare la sua gente.
36 'It has fal en to him in his time to expel the foreigners from his country, including those in the City ofDavid in Jerusalem, who had converted it into a citadel for their own use, from which they would sal y out todefile the surroundings of the sanctuary and to violate its sacred character;36 Nei suoi giorni si riuscì felicemente per mezzo suo a scacciare dal loro paese i pagani e quelli che erano nella città di Davide e in Gerusalemme, che si erano edificati l'Acra e ne uscivano profanando i dintorni del santuario e recando offesa grande alla sua purità.
37 to station Jewish soldiers there instead for the security of the country and the city; and to heightenthe wal s of Jerusalem;37 Egli vi insediò soldati giudei, la fortificò per la purità della regione e della città ed elevò le mura di Gerusalemme.
38 'And since King Demetrius has heard that the Romans call the Jews their friends, al ies and brothers,38 Il re Demetrio quindi gli confermò il sommo sacerdozio;
39 and that they have given an honourable reception to Simon's ambassadors, and, furthermore,39 lo ascrisse tra i suoi amici e gli conferì grandi onori.
40 that the Jews and priests are happy that Simon should, pending the advent of a genuine prophet, betheir ethnarch and high priest for life40 Seppe infatti che i Giudei erano considerati amici, alleati e fratelli da parte dei Romani, e che questi erano andati incontro ai messaggeri di Simone con segni di onore;
41 therefore he has confirmed him in the high-priestly office, has raised him to the rank of Friend andhas showered great honours on him, also confirming him as their commander-in-chief,41 che i Giudei e i sacerdoti avevano approvato che Simone fosse sempre loro condottiero e sommo sacerdote finché sorgesse un profeta fedele,
42 with the right to appoint officials to oversee the fabric of the sanctuary and to administer the country,munitions and fortresses;42 che fosse loro comandante militare e avesse cura del santuario e fossero nominati da lui i sovrintendenti ai loro lavori, al paese, agli armamenti e alle fortezze;
43 he is to have personal charge of the sanctuary, and to be obeyed by al ; al official documents in thecountry must be drawn up in his name; and he may assume the purple and may wear golden ornaments;43 che, prendendosi cura del santuario, fosse da tutti obbedito; che scrivessero nel suo nome tutti i contratti del paese e vestisse di porpora e ornamenti d'oro;
44 'Furthermore, it is against the law for any member of the public or of the priesthood to contraveneany of these enactments or to contest his decisions, or to convene a meeting anywhere in the country without hispermission, or to assume the purple or wear the golden brooch;44 né doveva essere lecito a nessuno del popolo né dei sacerdoti respingere alcuno di questi diritti o disobbedire ai suoi ordini o convocare riunioni senza suo consenso e vestire di porpora e ornarsi della fibbia aurea;
45 and anyone acting contrary to, or rejecting any article of, these enactments is liable to punishment;45 chiunque agisse contro questi decreti o ne respingesse alcuno, fosse ritenuto colpevole.
46 'And since the people have unanimously agreed to grant Simon the right to act as aforesaid, and46 Piacque a tutto il popolo sancire che Simone si comportasse secondo questi decreti.
47 since Simon, for his part, has given his assent, and has consented to assume the high-priestly officeand to be commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews and their priests, and to preside over al :47 Simone da parte sua accettò e gradì di esercitare il sommo sacerdozio, di essere anche stratega ed etnarca dei Giudei e dei sacerdoti e capo di tutti".
48 'So, be it now enacted: that this record be inscribed on bronze tablets and be erected at someconspicuous place within the precincts of the Temple,48 Disposero che questa iscrizione fosse riportata su tavole di bronzo da collocarsi nel recinto del santuario in luogo visibile
49 and that copies be deposited in the Treasury for Simon and his descendants.'49 e che se ne depositasse copia nel tesoro, perché fosse a disposizione di Simone e dei suoi figli.
