1 The king of Egypt then assembled an army as numerous as the sands of the seashore, with manyships, and set out to take possession of Alexander's kingdom by a ruse and add it to his own kingdom.	1 Il re d'Egitto raccolse forze numerose come la sabbia che è lungo il lido del mare e molte navi e cercava di impadronirsi con inganno del regno di Alessandro per annetterlo al proprio regno.
2 He set off for Syria with protestations of peace, and the people of the towns opened their gates to himand came out to meet him, since King Alexander's orders were to welcome him, Ptolemy being his father-in-law.	2 Venne in Siria con dimostrazioni pacifiche e tutte le città gli aprivano le porte e gli andavano incontro, perché era ordine del re Alessandro di andargli incontro, essendo suo suocero.

6 Jonathan went in state to meet the king at Joppa, where they greeted each other and spent the night.	6 Giònata andò incontro al re in Giaffa con grande apparato e si salutarono a vicenda e passarono la notte colà.
7 Jonathan accompanied the king as far as the river called Eleutherus, and then returned to Jerusalem.	7 Giònata accompagnò poi il re fino al fiume chiamato Elèutero e fece ritorno in Gerusalemme.
8 King Ptolemy for his part occupied the coastal towns as far as Seleucia on the coast, al the whilematuring his wicked designs against Alexander.	8 Il re Tolomeo si impadronì di tutte le città della costa fino a Selèucia marittima e covava piani iniqui riguardo ad Alessandro.
9 He sent envoys to King Demetrius to say, 'Come and let us make a treaty; I shall give you mydaughter, whom Alexander now has, and you shal rule your father's kingdom.	9 Mandò un'ambasciata a dire al re Demetrio: "Su, concludiamo un'alleanza fra noi: io ti darò mia figlia, che Alessandro ha in moglie, e la possibilità di rientrare nel regno di tuo padre.

11 He made this accusation because he coveted his kingdom.	11 Lo calunniò perché egli aspirava al suo regno;
12 Having carried off his daughter and bestowed her on Demetrius, he broke with Alexander, and theirenmity became open.	12 quindi, toltagli la figlia, la diede a Demetrio e cambiò atteggiamento verso Alessandro e divenne così manifesta la loro inimicizia.
13 Ptolemy next entered Antioch and assumed the crown of Asia; he now wore on his head the twocrowns of Egypt and Asia.	13 Tolomeo entrò in Antiochia e cinse la corona dell'Asia; si pose in capo due corone, quella dell'Egitto e quella dell'Asia.

15 but when he heard the news, he advanced on his rival to give battle, while Ptolemy for his part alsotook the field, met him with a strong force and routed him.	15 Appena seppe la cosa, Alessandro venne contro di lui per combatterlo. 16 Alexander fled to Arabia for refuge, and King Ptolemy reigned supreme.	16 Alessandro fuggì in Arabia per trovarvi scampo e il re Tolomeo trionfò.
17 Zabdiel the Arab cut off Alexander's head and sent it to Ptolemy.	17 L'arabo Zabdiel tagliò la testa ad Alessandro e la mandò a Tolomeo.

20 At the same time, Jonathan mustered the men of Judaea for an assault on the Citadel of Jerusalem,and they set up numerous siege-engines against it.	20 In quei giorni Giònata radunò gli uomini della Giudea per espugnare l'Acra in Gerusalemme e allestì molte macchine contro di essa.
21 But some renegades who hated their nation made their way to the king and told him that Jonathanwas besieging the Citadel.	21 Allora alcuni nemici del popolo, uomini iniqui, corsero dal re ad annunciare che Giònata assediava l'Acra.
22 The king was angered by the news. No sooner had he been informed than he set out and came toPtolemais. He wrote to Jonathan, tel ing him to raise the siege and to meet him for a conference in Ptolemais assoon as possible.	22 Sentendo la cosa, quegli si adirò; quando ne ebbe conferma, si mise subito in viaggio, venne a Tolemàide e scrisse a Giònata di sospendere l'assedio e di andargli incontro a Tolemàide al più presto per un colloquio.
23 When Jonathan heard this, he gave orders for the siege to continue; he then selected a deputationfrom the elders of Israel and the priests, and took the deliberate risk	23 Quando Giònata ricevette il messaggio, ordinò di continuare l'assedio e, scelti alcuni anziani e sacerdoti, decise di esporre se stesso al pericolo;
24 of himself taking silver and gold, clothing and numerous other presents, and going to Ptolemais toface the king, whose favour he succeeded in winning;	24 prese con sé argento e oro, vesti e molti altri doni e si recò dal re a Tolemàide e trovò favore presso di lui.
25 and although one or two renegades of his nation brought charges against him,	25 C'erano però alcuni traditori del suo popolo a deporre contro di lui,
26 the king treated him as his predecessors had treated him, and promoted him in the presence of alhis friends.	26 ma il re lo trattò come lo avevano trattato i suoi predecessori e lo esaltò davanti a tutti i suoi amici,

28 Jonathan asked the king to exempt Judaea and the three Samaritan districts from taxation,promising him three hundred talents in return.	28 Giònata ottenne che il re dichiarasse la Giudea esente dai tributi insieme alle tre toparchie e alla Samaria e gli promise trecento talenti.
29 The king consented, and wrote Jonathan a rescript covering the whole matter, in these terms:	29 Il re acconsentì e scrisse a Giònata, a proposito di tutto questo, lettere del seguente tenore:
30 'King Demetrius to Jonathan his brother, and to the Jewish nation, greetings.	30 "Il re Demetrio al fratello Giònata e al popolo dei Giudei salute.
31 'We have written to Lasthenes our cousin concerning you, and now send you this copy of ourrescript for your own information:	31 Rimettiamo anche a voi copia della lettera che abbiamo scritta a Làstene nostro parente intorno a voi, perché ne prendiate conoscenza.
32 "King Demetrius to his father Lasthenes, greetings.	32 Re Demetrio a Làstene suo padre salute.
33 "The nation of the Jews is our al y; they fulfil their obligations to us, and in view of their goodwilltowards us we have decided to show them our bounty.	33 Abbiamo deciso di beneficare il popolo dei Giudici nostri amici e rispettosi dei nostri diritti, per la loro benevolenza nei nostri riguardi.
34 We confirm them in their possession of the territory of Judaea and the three districts of Aphairema,Lydda and Ramathaim; these were annexed to Judaea from Samaritan territory, with al their dependencies, infavour of al who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the royal dues which the king formerly received fromthem every year, from the yield of the soil and the fruit crops.	34 Abbiamo assegnato a loro il territorio della Giudea; i tre distretti di Afèrema, Lidda e Ramatàim restano trasferiti dalla Samaria alla Giudea con le loro dipendenze in favore di quanti offrono sacrifici in Gerusalemme, in compenso dei diritti che il re prelevava in passato ogni anno da loro sui frutti della terra e degli alberi.
35 As regards our other rights over the tithes and taxes due to us, over the salt marshes, and the crowntaxes due to us, as from today we release them from them al .	35 Da qui innanzi tutte le altre nostre competenze delle decime e delle tasse a noi dovute e le saline e le corone a noi spettanti, tutto condoniamo loro.
36 None of these grants will be revoked henceforth or anywhere.	36 Nessuna di queste disposizioni sarà mai revocata da oggi.
37 You wil make yourself responsible for having a copy of this made, to be given to Jonathan anddisplayed on the holy mountain in a conspicuous place." '	37 Sia dunque vostra cura preparare una copia della presente e rimetterla a Giònata perché sia esposta sul monte santo in luogo visibile".
38 When King Demetrius saw that the country was at peace under his rule and that no resistance wasoffered him, he dismissed his forces, and sent al the men home, except for the foreign troops that he hadrecruited in the foreign island, thus incurring the enmity of the veterans who had served his ancestors.	38 Il re Demetrio, vedendo che il paese era in pace sotto di lui e nessuno gli faceva resistenza, congedò le truppe perché ognuno tornasse a casa sua, eccetto le forze straniere che aveva assoldate dalle isole dei pagani. Allora gli si inimicarono tutte le milizie dei suoi padri.
39 Now Trypho, one of Alexander's former supporters, noting that al the troops were muttering againstDemetrius, went to see Iamleku, the Arab who was bringing up Antiochus, Alexander's young son,	39 Trifone, che prima stava con Alessandro, vide che tutte le milizie mormoravano contro Demetrio e andò presso l'arabo Imalcue che allevava il piccolo Antioco figlio di Alessandro.
40 and repeatedly urged him to let him have the boy, so that he might succeed his father as king; hetold him of Demetrius' decision and of the resentment it had aroused among his troops. 41 Jonathan, meanwhile, sent to ask King Demetrius to withdraw the garrisons from the Citadel inJerusalem and from the other fortresses, since they were constantly fighting Israel.	41 Giònata intanto mandò a chiedere al re che richiamasse gli occupanti dell'Acra in Gerusalemme e quelli delle altre fortezze, perché erano sempre in lotta con Israele.
42 Demetrius sent word back to Jonathan, 'Not only wil I do this for you and for your nation, but I shalheap honours on you and your nation if I find a favourable opportunity.	42 Demetrio fece rispondere a Giònata: "Non solo questo farò per te e per il tuo popolo ma colmerò te e il tuo popolo di onori appena ne avrò l'opportunità.
43 For the present, you would do wel to send me reinforcements, since al my troops have deserted.'	43 Ora però farai bene a inviarmi uomini che combattano con me, perché si sono ritirate le mie truppe".
44 Jonathan sent three thousand experienced soldiers to him in Antioch; when they reached the king,he was delighted at their arrival.	44 Giònata gli inviò ad Antiochia tremila degli uomini più forti; essi si recarono presso il re, e il re si rallegrò della loro venuta.
45 The citizens crowded together in the centre of the city, to the number of some hundred and twentythousand, intending to kil the king.	45 I cittadini della capitale si radunarono al centro della città in numero di circa centoventimila uomini e volevano eliminare il re.
46 The king took refuge in the palace, while the citizens occupied the thoroughfares of the city andbegan to attack.	46 Il re si rifugiò nel palazzo, ma i cittadini occuparono le vie della città e incominciarono i combattimenti.
47 The king then cal ed on the Jews for help; and these al ral ied round him, then fanned out throughthe city, and that day kil ed about a hundred thousand of its inhabitants.	47 Il re chiamò in aiuto i Giudei, i quali accorsero tutti a lui; poi si sparsero per la città e ne uccisero in quel giorno circa centomila;
48 They fired the city, seizing a great deal of plunder at the same time, and secured the king's safety.	48 quindi incendiarono la città, fecero in quel giorno gran bottino e salvarono il re.
49 When the citizens saw that the Jews had the city at their mercy, their courage failed them, and theymade an abject appeal to the king,	49 I cittadini videro che i Giudei si erano impadroniti della città a loro piacere e si persero d'animo e gridarono verso il re con voce supplichevole:
50 'Give us the right hand of peace, and let the Jews stop their fight against us and the city.'	50 "Stendi a noi la destra e desistano i Giudei dal combattere noi e la città".
51 They threw down their arms and made peace. The Jews were covered in glory, in the eyes of theking and of everyone else in his kingdom. Having won renown in his kingdom, they returned to Jerusalem ladenwith booty.	51 Gettarono le armi e fecero la pace. I Giudei crebbero in fama presso il re e presso quanti erano nel suo regno e fecero ritorno in Gerusalemme portando grande bottino.
52 Thus, King Demetrius sat al the more securely on his royal throne, and the country was quiet underhis government.	52 Demetrio rimase sul trono del suo regno e il paese fu in pace sotto di lui.
53 But he gave the lie to all the promises he had made, and changed his attitude to Jonathan, givingnothing in return for the services Jonathan had rendered him, but thwarting him at every turn.	53 Ma rinnegò quanto aveva detto, cambiò rapporti con Giònata e non corrispose alla benevolenza che questi gli aveva dimostrata e lo fece soffrire molto.
54 After this, Trypho came back with the little boy Antiochus, who became king and was crowned.	54 Dopo questi fatti, Trifone ritornò con Antioco ancora adolescente, il quale cominciò a regnare e cinse la corona.
55 Al the troops that Demetrius had summarily dismissed rallied to Antiochus, and made war onDemetrius, who turned tail and fled.	55 Si raccolsero presso di lui tutte le milizie che Demetrio aveva licenziate e mossero guerra contro di lui ed egli fuggì e rimase sconfitto.
56 Trypho captured the elephants and seized Antioch.	56 Trifone catturò gli elefanti e si impadronì di Antiochia.
57 Young Antiochus then wrote as fol ows to Jonathan: 'I confirm you in the high-priesthood and set youover the four districts and appoint you one of the Friends of the King.'	57 Allora il giovinetto Antioco scrisse a Giònata: "Ti confermo il sommo sacerdozio, ti faccio capo dei quattro distretti e ti concedo di essere tra gli amici del re".
58 He sent him a service of gold plate, and granted him the right to drink from gold vessels, and to wearthe purple and the golden brooch.	58 Gli inviò vasi d'oro e un servizio da tavola con la facoltà di bere in quei vasi, di vestire la porpora e portare la fibbia d'oro.
59 He appointed his brother Simon commander-in-chief of the region from the Ladder of Tyre to thefrontiers of Egypt.	59 Nominò anche Simone suo fratello comandante dalla Scala di Tiro fino ai confini dell'Egitto.
60 Jonathan then set out and made a progress through Transeuphrates and its towns, and the entireSyrian army rallied to his support. He came to Ascalon and was received in state by the inhabitants.	60 Giònata si diede a percorrere la provincia dell'Oltrefiume e le varie città e accorse a lui, come alleato, tutto l'esercito della Siria. Andò ad Ascalòna e i cittadini gli uscirono incontro a rendergli omaggio.
61 From there he proceeded to Gaza, but the people of Gaza shut him out, so he laid siege to it,burning down its suburbs and plundering them.	61 Di là passò a Gaza, ma gli abitanti di Gaza gli chiusero le porte; egli la cinse d'assedio e incendiò i sobborghi e li mise a sacco.
62 The people of Gaza then pleaded with Jonathan, and he made peace with them; but he took thesons of their chief men as hostages and sent them away to Jerusalem. He then travel ed through the country asfar as Damascus.	62 Allora quelli di Gaza supplicarono Giònata, il quale diede loro la destra, prelevando i figli dei loro capi come ostaggi e inviandoli a Gerusalemme; poi percorse la regione fino a Damasco.
63 Jonathan now learned that Demetrius' generals had arrived at Kadesh in Galilee with a large army,intending to remove him from office,	63 Giònata venne a sapere che i capi di Demetrio si trovavano presso Cades in Galilea con un numeroso esercito e con l'intenzione di distoglierlo dall'impresa.
64 and went to engage them, leaving his brother Simon inside the country.	64 Egli si mosse contro di loro, lasciando il fratello Simone nel paese.
65 Simon laid siege to Beth-Zur, attacking it day after day, and blockading the inhabitants	65 Simone si accampò contro Bet-Zur e l'assalì per molti giorni assediandola.
66 til they sued for peace, which he granted them, though he expel ed them from the town andoccupied it, stationing a garrison there.	66 Allora supplicarono che desse loro la destra ed egli la diede, ma li fece sloggiare di là, occupò la città e vi pose una guarnigione.
67 Jonathan and his army, meanwhile, having pitched camp by the Lake of Gennesar, rose early, andby morning were already in the plain of Hazor.	67 Giònata a sua volta e il suo esercito si erano accampati presso il lago di Gennesaret e raggiunsero di buon mattino la pianura di Casòr.
68 The foreigners' army advanced to fight them on the plain, having first positioned an ambush for himin the mountains. While the main body was advancing directly towards the Jews,	68 Ed ecco l'esercito degli stranieri avanzare contro di lui nella pianura, dopo aver disposto appostamenti contro di lui sui monti. 72 Then he returned to the fight and routed the enemy, who fled.	72 Poi ritornò a combattere contro di loro, li sconfisse e li costrinse alla fuga.
73 When the fugitives from his own forces saw this, they came back to him and joined in the pursuit asfar as Kadesh where the enemy encampment was, and there they themselves pitched camp.	73 I suoi che erano fuggiti, quando videro ciò, ritornarono a lui e con lui si diedero all'inseguimento fino a Cades dov'era il loro accampamento e là anch'essi si accamparono.
74 About three thousand of the foreign troops fel that day. Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem.	74 Gli stranieri caduti in quel giorno furono circa tremila. Giònata tornò poi in Gerusalemme.
