NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
In the year 160, Alexander, son of Antiochus Epiphanes, raised an army and occupied Ptolemais. Hewas wel received, and there inaugurated his reign.1 Nell'anno centosessanta Alessandro Epìfane, figlio di Antioco, s'imbarcò e occupò Tolemàide; vi fu riconosciuto re e cominciò a regnare.
On hearing this, King Demetrius assembled a very large army and marched off to do battle with him.2 Quando lo seppe, il re Demetrio radunò un esercito molto grande e gli mosse contro per fargli guerra.
Demetrius furthermore sent Jonathan a most conciliatory letter, promising to promote him in rank,3 Demetrio mandò anche lettere a Giònata con espressioni di amicizia per esaltarlo.
for, as he said, 'We had better move first to come to terms with these people before he makescommon cause with Alexander against us;4 Diceva infatti: "Preveniamo costoro con la proposta di far pace con noi, prima che Giònata concluda un'alleanza con Alessandro contro tutti noi.
he wil not have forgotten al the wrongs we inflicted on him and his brothers, and on his nation.'5 Si ricorderà certo di tutti i mali che abbiamo causati a lui, ai suoi fratelli e al suo popolo".
He even authorised him to raise an army, to manufacture arms, and to describe himself as his al y,and ordered the hostages in the Citadel to be surrendered to him.6 Gli concesse facoltà di raccogliere milizie, di preparare armi e considerarsi suo alleato e gli fece restituire gli ostaggi che erano nell'Acra.
Jonathan went straight to Jerusalem and read the letter in the hearing of the whole people and of themen in the Citadel.7 Giònata venne in Gerusalemme e lesse le lettere davanti a tutto il popolo e a quelli dell'Acra.
They were terrified when they heard that the king had given him authority to raise an army.8 Questi ebbero grande timore quando sentirono che il re gli aveva concesso facoltà di arruolare milizie.
The men in the Citadel surrendered the hostages to Jonathan, who handed them back to theirparents.9 Quelli dell'Acra restituirono gli ostaggi ed egli li rese ai loro genitori.
Jonathan then took up residence in Jerusalem and began the rebuilding and restoration of the city.10 Giònata pose la residenza in Gerusalemme e incominciò a ricostruire e rinnovare la città.
He ordered those responsible for the work to build the wal s and the defences round Mount Zion ofsquared stone blocks to make them stronger, and this was done.11 Ordinò ai costruttori di edificare le mura e la cinta muraria del monte Sion con pietre quadrate per fortificazione, e così fecero.
The foreigners in the fortresses built by Bacchides abandoned them,12 Gli stranieri che stavano nelle fortezze edificate da Bàcchide fuggirono;
one after another leaving his post to go back to his own country.13 ognuno abbandonò la sua posizione e tornò alla sua terra;
Only at Beth-Zur were a few left of those who had forsaken the Law and the precepts, since this wastheir refuge.14 solo in Bet-Zur erano rimasti alcuni traditori della legge e dei comandamenti; fu quello il loro rifugio.
King Alexander heard of al the promises Demetrius had sent to Jonathan, and he was also given anaccount of the battles and exploits of this man and his brothers and of the hardships they had endured.15 Il re Alessandro seppe dell'ambasciata che Demetrio aveva mandato a Giònata; gli narrarono anche le battaglie e gli atti di valore che egli e i suoi fratelli avevano compiuto e le fatiche sopportate
'Shal we ever find another man like him?' he exclaimed. 'We must make him our friend and al y!'16 e disse: "Troveremo un altro come lui? Facciamocelo amico e alleato".
He therefore wrote him a letter, addressing him in these terms:17 Scrisse e spedì a lui questa lettera:
'King Alexander to his brother Jonathan, greetings.18 "Il re Alessandro al fratello Giònata salute.
'You have been brought to our notice as a strong man of action and as someone who deserves to beour friend.19 Abbiamo sentito dire di te che sei uomo forte e potente e disposto ad essere nostro amico.
Accordingly, we have today appointed you high priest of your nation, with the title of "Friend of theKing" ' -- he also sent him a purple robe and a golden crown-'and you are to study our interests and maintainfriendly relations with us.'20 Noi dunque ti nominiamo oggi sommo sacerdote del tuo popolo e amico del re - gli aveva inviato anche la porpora e la corona d'oro - perché tu favorisca la nostra causa e mantenga amicizia con noi".
Jonathan put on the sacred vestments in the seventh month of the year 160, on the feast of Shelters;he then set about raising troops and manufacturing arms in quantity.21 Giònata indossò le vesti sacre nel settimo mese dell'anno centosessanta nella festa delle Capanne e arruolò soldati e fece preparare molte armi.
Demetrius was displeased when he heard what had happened.22 Demetrio venne a sapere queste cose e si rattristò e disse:
'What have we been doing,' he said, 'for Alexander to forestal us in winning the friendship of theJews and so improving his own position?23 "Perché abbiamo lasciato che Alessandro ci prevenisse nell'accaparrarsi l'amicizia dei Giudei a suo sostegno?
I too shall address an appeal to them, offering them advancement and riches as an inducement tosupport me.'24 Scriverò anch'io parole d'invito e proposte di onori e di doni, perché passino dalla nostra parte".
And he wrote to them as fol ows: 'King Demetrius to the Jewish nation, greetings.25 Scrisse loro in questi termini: "Il re Demetrio al popolo dei Giudei salute.
'We have heard how you have kept your agreement with us and have maintained friendly relationswith us and have not gone over to our enemies, and it has given us great satisfaction.26 Avete osservato le nostre alleanze e siete rimasti nella nostra amicizia e non siete passati ai nostri nemici: l'abbiamo saputo e ne siamo felici.
If you now continue to keep faith with us, we shal make you a handsome return for what you do onour behalf.27 Continuate dunque a mantenerci la vostra fedeltà e ricambieremo con favori quello che farete per noi.
We shal accord you many exemptions and grant you privileges.28 Vi concederemo ampie immunità e vi invieremo doni.
'Henceforth I release you and exempt al the Jews from the tribute, the salt dues and the crownlevies,29 Fin da ora dispenso voi ed esonero tutti i Giudei dal tributo e dalla tassa del sale e dalle corone.
and whereas I am entitled to one-third of the grain and one-half of the fruit of the trees, I release fromthis levy, from today and for the future, Judaea and the three districts annexed to it from Samaria-Galilee, fromthis day henceforth in perpetuity.30 Rinuncio anche da oggi in poi a riscuotere dalla Giudea e dai tre distretti che le sono annessi, dalla Samaria e dalla Galilea, la terza parte del grano e la metà dei frutti degli alberi che mi spetta, da oggi per sempre.
Jerusalem wil be sacred and exempt, with its territory, from tithes and dues.31 Gerusalemme sia santa ed esente con il suo distretto e così siano sacre le decime e i tributi.
I relinquish control of the Citadel in Jerusalem and make it over to the high priest, so that he mayman it with a garrison of his own choosing.32 Rinuncio anche al potere sull'Acra in Gerusalemme e la concedo al sommo sacerdote perché vi stabilisca uomini da lui scelti a presidiarla.
Every Jewish person taken from Judaea into captivity in any part of my kingdom I set free withoutransom, and decree that al wil be exempt from taxes, even on their livestock.33 Rimetto in libertà senza compenso anche ogni persona giudea, fatta prigioniera fuori del paese di Giuda in tutti i miei domìni; tutti siano esonerati dai tributi, anche da quelli del bestiame.
Al festivals, Sabbaths, New Moons and days of special observance, and the three days before andthree days after a festival, wil be days of exemption and quittance for al the Jews in my kingdom,34 Tutte le feste e i sabati e i noviluni e il triduo prima e il triduo dopo la festa siano tutti giorni di esenzione e di immunità per tutti i Giudei che sono nel mio regno;
and no one wil have the right to exact payment from, or to molest, any of them for any matterwhatsoever.35 nessuno avrà il potere di intentare causa contro di loro o di disturbarli per alcun motivo.
'Jews will be enrol ed in the king's forces to the number of thirty thousand men and receivemaintenance on the same scale as the rest of the king's forces.36 Si potranno arruolare nell'esercito del re fino a tremila Giudei e sarà dato loro il soldo, come spetta a tutte le forze del re.
Some of them wil be stationed in the king's major fortresses, and from among others appointmentswil be made to positions of trust in the kingdom. Their officers and commanders will be appointed from their ownnumber and wil live under their own laws, as the king has prescribed for Judaea.37 Saranno posti di stanza alcuni di loro nelle più grandi fortezze del re, alcuni di loro saranno anche preposti agli affari di fiducia del regno; i loro superiori e i comandamenti saranno scelti tra di loro e potranno regolarsi secondo le loro leggi, come ha prescritto il re anche per la Giudea.
'As regards the three districts annexed to Judaea from the province of Samaria, these wil beintegrated into Judaea and considered as coming under one governor, obeying the high priest's authority and noother.38 I tre distretti assegnati alla Giudea, detraendoli dalla regione della Samaria, saranno riconosciuti dalla Giudea e considerati come sottoposti a uno solo e non dipendenti da altra autorità che non sia quella del sommo sacerdote.
Ptolemais and the land thereto pertaining I present to the sanctuary in Jerusalem, to meet thenecessary expenses of public worship.39 Assegno Tolemàide e le sue dipendenze come dono al tempio di Gerusalemme per le spese necessarie al santuario.
And I make a personal grant of fifteen thousand silver shekels annual y chargeable to the royalrevenue from appropriate places.40 Io personalmente assegno ogni anno quindicimila sicli d'argento prelevati dai diritti del re sulle località più convenienti.
And the entire surplus, which has not been paid in by the officials as in previous years, wilhenceforth be paid over by them for work on the Temple.41 Gli ulteriori contributi che non sono stati versati dagli incaricati come negli anni precedenti, d'ora in poi saranno corrisposti per le opere del tempio.
In addition, the sum of five thousand silver shekels, levied annual y on the profits of the sanctuary, asshown in the annual accounts, is also relinquished as the perquisite of the priests who perform the liturgy.42 Oltre a ciò i cinquemila sicli che venivano prelevati dall'ammontare delle entrate annuali del tempio sono anche condonati perché appartengono ai sacerdoti che vi prestano servizio.
Anyone who takes refuge in the Temple in Jerusalem or any of its precincts, when in debt to theroyal exchequer or otherwise, wil be discharged in ful possession of al the goods he owns in my kingdom.43 Chiunque si rifugerà nel tempio di Gerusalemme e nella sua zona con debiti da rendere al re o per qualunque motivo, sarà dichiarato libero con quanto gli appartiene nel mio regno.
As regards the building and restoration of the sanctuary, the expense of the work wil be met fromthe royal exchequer.44 Per le costruzioni e i restauri nel tempio le spese saranno sostenute dalla cassa del re.
The reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem and the fortification of the perimeter will also be acharge on the royal exchequer, as also the reconstruction of other city wal s in Judaea.'45 Anche per la costruzione delle mura e delle fortificazioni intorno a Gerusalemme le spese saranno sostenute dall'erario del re e così la costruzione di mura nella Giudea".
When Jonathan and the people heard these proposals, they put no faith in them and refused toaccept them, remembering what great wrongs Demetrius had done to Israel and how cruel y he had oppressedthem.46 Quando Giònata e il popolo intesero simili espressioni, non vi prestarono fede e non le accettarono, ricordando le grandi iniquità da lui compiute contro Israele e quanto li avesse fatti soffrire.
They decided in favour of Alexander, since he seemed to offer the better inducements of the two,and they became his constant al ies.47 Ma preferirono Alessandro, perché questi era stato il primo ad avviare trattative di pace, e gli furono sempre alleati.
King Alexander now mustered large forces and advanced against Demetrius.48 Il re Alessandro raccolse grandi forze e uscì in campo contro Demetrio.
The two kings met in battle. Alexander's army was routed, and Demetrius pursued him and defeatedhis troops.49 I due re attaccarono battaglia e l'esercito di Demetrio fu messo in fuga; Alessandro lo inseguì ed ebbe la meglio sulle sue truppe;
He continued the battle with vigour until sunset. Demetrius himself, however, was kil ed the sameday.50 la battaglia infuriò fino al tramonto del sole e Demetrio cadde ucciso in quel giorno.
Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemy king of Egypt, with this message:51 Alessandro mandò allora ambasciatori al re Tolomeo con questo messaggio:
'Since I have returned to my kingdom, have ascended the throne of my ancestors, have gainedcontrol by crushing Demetrius, and so recovered our country-52 "Poiché sono rientrato nel mio regno e mi sono seduto sul trono dei miei padri, ho ripreso il comando e ho sconfitto Demetrio - egli si era impadronito del mio territorio
for I fought him and we crushed both him and his army, and I now occupy his royal throne-53 ma io gli ho mosso guerra ed egli e il suo esercito furono sconfitti dal nostro e ci siamo seduti sul trono del suo regno -
let us now make a treaty of friendship. Give me your daughter in marriage: as your son-in-law, I shalgive you, and her, presents which are worthy of you.'54 concludiamo tra di noi amicizia; tu concedimi in sposa tua figlia, io sarò tuo genero e offrirò a te e a lei doni degni di te".
King Ptolemy replied as follows: 'Happy the day when you returned to the land of your ancestors andascended their royal throne!55 Tolomeo rispose: "Felice il giorno in cui sei tornato nella terra dei tuoi padri e ti sei seduto sul trono del loro regno.
I shal at once do for you what your letter proposes; but meet me at Ptolemais, so that we can seeone another, and I shall become your father-in-law, as you have asked.'56 Io farò quanto hai proposto nella lettera, ma tu vienimi incontro fino a Tolemàide, perché ci vediamo a vicenda, e io diventerò tuo suocero, come hai chiesto".
Ptolemy left Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra and reached Ptolemais in the year 162.57 Tolomeo partì dall'Egitto con la figlia Cleopatra e si recò a Tolemàide nell'anno centosessantadue.
King Alexander went to meet him, and Ptolemy gave him the hand of his daughter Cleopatra andcelebrated her wedding in Ptolemais with great magnificence, as kings do.58 Gli andò incontro il re Alessandro: Tolomeo gli diede sua figlia Cleopatra e celebrò le nozze con lei in Tolemàide secondo lo stile dei re con grande sfarzo.
King Alexander then wrote to Jonathan to come and meet him.59 Il re Alessandro scrisse a Giònata di venirgli incontro.
Jonathan made his way in state to Ptolemais and met the two kings; he gave them and their friendssilver and gold, and many gifts, and made a favourable impression on them.60 Egli andò con grande parata a Tolemàide e s'incontrò con i due re; offrì loro e ai loro amici oro e argento e molti doni e si guadagnò il loro favore.
A number of scoundrels, the pest of Israel, combined to denounce him, but the king paid no attentionto them.61 Si accordarono però contro di lui uomini pestiferi d'Israele, traditori della legge, per deporre contro di lui, ma il re non prestò loro ascolto.
In fact, the king commanded that Jonathan should be divested of his own garments and clothed inthe purple, which was done.62 Il re invece diede ordine di far deporre a Giònata le sue vesti e di rivestirlo della porpora e l'ordine fu eseguito.
The king then seated him by his side and said to his officers, 'Escort him into the centre of the cityand proclaim that no one is to bring charges against him on any count; no one is to molest him for any reason.'63 Il re lo fece sedere accanto a sé e disse ai suoi ufficiali: "Attraversate con lui la città e proclamate che nessuno porti accuse contro di lui per qualunque motivo e nessuno gli rechi molestia in alcun modo".
And so, when his accusers saw the honour done him by this proclamation, and Jonathan himselfinvested in the purple, they all fled.64 Ora, quando i suoi accusatori videro gli onori che riceveva, come proclamava il banditore, e che era stato rivestito di porpora, si dileguarono tutti.
The king did him the honour of enrol ing him among the First Friends, and appointed himcommander-in-chief and governor-general.65 Il re gli conferì onori e lo ascrisse tra i suoi primi amici e lo costituì stratega e governatore della provincia.
Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem in peace and gladness.66 Così Giònata tornò a Gerusalemme in pace e gioia.
In the year 165, Demetrius son of Demetrius came from Crete to the land of his ancestors.67 Nell'anno centosessantacinque Demetrio, figlio di Demetrio, venne da Creta nella terra dei suoi padri.
When King Alexander heard of it he was plunged into gloom, and retired to Antioch.68 Il re Alessandro, quando lo seppe, ne fu assai preoccupato e tornò in Antiochia.
Demetrius confirmed Apol onius as governor of Coele-Syria; the latter assembled a large force,encamped at Jamnia and sent the fol owing message to Jonathan the high priest:69 Demetrio affidò il governo della Celesiria ad Apollonio e questi raccolse un grande esercito, si accampò presso Iamnia e inviò al sommo sacerdote Giònata questo messaggio:
'You are entirely alone in rising against us, and now I find myself ridiculed and reproached on youraccount. Why do you use your authority to our disadvantage in the mountains?70 "Soltanto tu ti sei alzato contro di noi e io sono diventato oggetto di derisione e di scherno a causa tua. Perché ti fai forte contro di noi stando sui monti?
If you are so confident in your forces, come down now to meet us on the plain and let us take eachother's measure there; on my side I have the strength of the towns.71 Ora, se sei tanto sicuro delle tue forze, scendi contro di noi nella pianura e qui misuriamoci, perché con me c'è la forza delle città.
Ask and learn who I am and who the others supporting us are. You will hear that you cannot standup to us, since your ancestors were twice routed on their own ground,72 Infòrmati e sappi chi sono io e chi sono gli altri miei alleati. Questi ti diranno: Non potrete tener saldo il piede davanti a noi, perché già due volte sono stati da noi sconfitti i tuoi padri nella loro terra.
nor wil you now be able to withstand the cavalry or so great an army on the plain, where there isneither rock, nor stone, nor refuge of any kind.'73 Così ora non potrai resistere alla cavalleria e a un esercito come il nostro in pianura, ove non c'è roccia né scoglio né luogo in cui rifugiarsi".
On hearing Apollonius' words, Jonathan's spirit was roused; he picked ten thousand men and leftJerusalem, and his brother Simon joined him with reinforcements.74 Quando Giònata intese le parole di Apollonio, ne ebbe l'animo irritato; scelse diecimila uomini e uscì da Gerusalemme. Suo fratello Simone gli venne incontro per aiutarlo.
He drew up his forces outside Joppa, the citizens having shut him out, since Apol onius had agarrison in Joppa. When they began the attack,75 Si accampò presso Giaffa, ma gli abitanti avevano chiuso la città, perché a Giaffa vi era un presidio di Apollonio. Le diedero l'assalto;
the citizens took fright and opened the gates, and Jonathan occupied Joppa.76 i cittadini spaventati aprirono e Giònata fu padrone di Giaffa.
Hearing this, Apol onius marshal ed three thousand cavalry and a large army and made his way toAzotus as though intending to march through, while in fact pressing on into the plain, since he had a greatnumber of cavalry on which he was relying.77 Apollonio lo seppe e mise in campo tremila cavalli e molte truppe e si mosse verso Asdòd, come se intendesse fare quel percorso, ma subito si spinse nella pianura, poiché aveva una cavalleria numerosa sulla quale contava.
Jonathan pursued him as far as Azotus, where the armies joined battle.78 Giònata lo inseguì alle spalle in direzione di Asdòd e gli eserciti attaccarono battaglia.
Now, Apol onius had left a thousand horsemen in concealment behind them.79 Apollonio aveva lasciato un migliaio di cavalieri nascosti dietro di loro;
Jonathan knew of this enemy position behind him; the horsemen surrounded his army, firing theirarrows into his men from morning til evening.80 Giònata però si era accorto che c'era un appostamento dietro di lui. Quelli circondarono il suo schieramento e lanciarono frecce contro le truppe da mattina fino a sera.
But the troops stood firm, as Jonathan had ordered. Once the cavalry was exhausted,81 Ma le truppe tennero fermo come aveva ordinato Giònata, mentre i cavalli di quelli si stancarono.
Simon sent his own troops into attack against the phalanx, which he cut to pieces and routed.82 Allora Simone fece uscire le sue riserve e attaccò la falange e poiché la cavalleria ormai era esausta, quelli furono travolti e si diedero alla fuga;
The cavalry scattered over the plain and fled to Azotus, where they took sanctuary in Beth-Dagon,the temple of their idol.83 i cavalieri si dispersero nella pianura e gli altri si rifugiarono in Asdòd ed entrarono in Bret-Dagon, il tempio del loro idolo, in cerca di scampo.
Jonathan, however, set fire to Azotus and the surrounding towns, plundered them, and burned downthe temple of Dagon, with al the fugitives who had crowded into it.84 Giònata allora incendiò Asdòd e le città all'intorno, prese le loro spoglie e diede alle fiamme anche il tempio di Dagon e quanti vi si erano rifugiati.
The enemy losses, counting those who fell by the sword and those burnt to death, total ed abouteight thousand men.85 Gli uccisi di spada e i morti tra le fiamme assommarono a circa ottomila uomini.
Jonathan then left and pitched camp outside Ascalon, where the citizens came out to meet him withgreat ceremony.86 Poi Giònata tolse il campo di là e si accampò di fronte ad Ascalòna e i cittadini gli vennero incontro con grandi onori.
Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem with his fol owers, laden with booty.87 Così Giònata tornò in Gerusalemme con i suoi uomini carichi di bottino.
In the event, when King Alexander heard what had happened, he awarded Jonathan furtherhonours:88 Il re Alessandro, udendo queste notizie, aumentò gli onori a Giònata;
he sent him the golden brooch, of the kind customarily presented to the King's Cousins, and gavehim proprietary rights over Ekron and the land adjoining it.89 gli inviò la fibbia d'oro che si usa inviare ai parenti del re e gli diede in possesso Ekròn e tutto il suo territorio.
