NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Say to Aaron, "Stretch out your hand with your staff, over the rivers, thecanals and the marshland, and bring the frogs up over the land of Egypt." '1 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Comanda ad Aronne: Stendi la mano con il tuo bastone sui fiumi, sui canali e sugli stagni e fa' uscire le rane sul paese d'Egitto!".
So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the landof Egypt.2 Aronne stese la mano sulle acque d'Egitto e le rane uscirono e coprirono il paese d'Egitto.
But by their spel s the magicians did the same, bringing frogs over the land of Egypt.3 Ma i maghi, con le loro magie, operarono la stessa cosa e fecero uscire le rane sul paese d'Egitto.
Pharaoh then summoned Moses and Aaron and said, 'Entreat Yahweh to take the frogs away from meand my subjects, and I promise to let the people go and sacrifice to Yahweh.'4 Il faraone fece chiamare Mosè e Aronne e disse: "Pregate il Signore, perché allontani le rane da me e dal mio popolo; io lascerò andare il popolo, perché possa sacrificare al Signore!".
Moses said to Pharaoh, 'You are the one to gain by it: when would you like me to pray for you, yourofficials and your subjects, so as to rid you and your houses of the frogs so that they wil be left only in theRiver?'5 Mosè disse al faraone: "Fammi l'onore di comandarmi per quando io devo pregare in favore tuo e dei tuoi ministri e del tuo popolo, per liberare dalle rane te e le tue case, in modo che ne rimangano soltanto nel Nilo".
'Tomorrow,' he said. Moses said, 'It shal be as you say, so that you wil know that there is no one likeYahweh our God.6 Rispose: "Per domani".
The frogs wil leave you, your houses, your officials and your subjects and wil be left only in the River.'7 le rane si ritireranno da te e dalle tue case, dai tuoi servitori e dal tuo popolo: ne rimarranno soltanto nel Nilo".
Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh's presence, and Moses pleaded with Yahweh about the frogs which hehad inflicted on Pharaoh.8 Mosè e Aronne si allontanarono dal faraone e Mosè supplicò il Signore riguardo alle rane, che aveva mandate contro il faraone.
Yahweh did as Moses asked, and in house and courtyard and field the frogs died.9 Il Signore operò secondo la parola di Mosè e le rane morirono nelle case, nei cortili e nei campi.
They piled them up in heaps and the country stank.10 Le raccolsero in tanti mucchi e il paese ne fu ammorbato.
But once Pharaoh saw that there had been a respite, he became obstinate and, as Yahweh hadforetold, refused to listen to them.11 Ma il faraone vide ch'era intervenuto il sollievo, si ostinò e non diede loro ascolto, secondo quanto aveva predetto il Signore.
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Say to Aaron, "Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, andit wil turn into mosquitoes throughout the whole of Egypt." '12 Quindi il Signore disse a Mosè: "Comanda ad Aronne: Stendi il tuo bastone, percuoti la polvere della terra: essa si muterà in zanzare in tutto il paese d'Egitto".
Aaron stretched out his hand, with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth, and there weremosquitoes on man and beast; al the dust of the earth turned into mosquitoes throughout the whole of Egypt.13 Così fecero: Aronne stese la mano con il suo bastone, colpì la polvere della terra e infierirono le zanzare sugli uomini e sulle bestie; tutta la polvere del paese si era mutata in zanzare in tutto l'Egitto.
By their spel s the magicians tried to produce mosquitoes in the same way but failed, and there weremosquitoes on man and beast.14 I maghi fecero la stessa cosa con le loro magie, per produrre zanzare, ma non riuscirono e le zanzare infierivano sugli uomini e sulle bestie.
So the magicians said to Pharaoh, 'This is the finger of God.' But Pharaoh was obstinate and, asYahweh had foretold, refused to listen to them.15 Allora i maghi dissero al faraone: "È il dito di Dio!".
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he makes his wayto the water. Say to him, "Yahweh says this: Let my people go and worship me.16 Poi il Signore disse a Mosè: "Alzati di buon mattino e presentati al faraone quando andrà alle acque; gli riferirai: Dice il Signore: Lascia partire il mio popolo, perché mi possa servire!
But if you wil not let my people go, I shal send horseflies on you, on your officials, your subjects andyour houses. The Egyptians' houses wil swarm with horseflies, and so wil the very ground they stand on.17 Se tu non lasci partire il mio popolo, ecco manderò su di te, sui tuoi ministri, sul tuo popolo e sulle tue case i mosconi: le case degli Egiziani saranno piene di mosconi e anche il suolo sul quale essi si trovano.
But I shal exempt the region of Goshen, where my people are living, that day; there will be nohorseflies there, so that you will know that I am Yahweh, here in this country.18 Ma in quel giorno io eccettuerò il paese di Gosen, dove dimora il mio popolo, in modo che là non vi siano mosconi, perché tu sappia che io, il Signore, sono in mezzo al paese!
I shal make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign wil take place tomorrow." '19 Così farò distinzione tra il mio popolo e il tuo popolo. Domani avverrà questo segno".
Yahweh did this, and great swarms of horseflies found their way into Pharaoh's palace, into hisofficials' houses and al over Egypt; the country was ruined by the horseflies.20 Così fece il Signore: una massa imponente di mosconi entrò nella casa del faraone, nella casa dei suoi ministri e in tutto il paese d'Egitto; la regione era devastata a causa dei mosconi.
Pharaoh then summoned Moses and Aaron and said, 'Go and sacrifice to your God, inside thecountry.'21 Il faraone fece chiamare Mosè e Aronne e disse: "Andate a sacrificare al vostro Dio nel paese!".
'That would never do,' Moses said, 'since what we sacrifice to Yahweh our God is outrageous to theEgyptians. If the Egyptians see us offering sacrifices which outrage them, won't they stone us?22 Ma rispose Mosè: "Non è opportuno far così perché quello che noi sacrifichiamo al Signore, nostro Dio, è abominio per gli Egiziani. Se noi facciamo un sacrificio abominevole agli Egiziani sotto i loro occhi, forse non ci lapideranno?
We shal make a three-days' journey into the desert to sacrifice to Yahweh our God, as he has orderedus.'23 Andremo nel deserto, a tre giorni di cammino, e sacrificheremo al Signore, nostro Dio, secondo quanto egli ci ordinerà!".
Pharaoh said, 'I wil let you go and sacrifice to Yahweh your God in the desert, provided you do not govery far.
'The moment I leave you,' Moses said, 'I shal pray to Yahweh. Tomorrow morning the horseflies willeave Pharaoh, his officials and his subjects. But Pharaoh must stop trifling with us by not al owing the people togo and sacrifice to Yahweh.'25 Rispose Mosè: "Ecco, uscirò dalla tua presenza e pregherò il Signore; domani i mosconi si ritireranno dal faraone, dai suoi ministri e dal suo popolo. Però il faraone cessi di burlarsi di noi, non lasciando partire il popolo, perché possa sacrificare al Signore!".
Moses then left Pharaoh's presence and prayed to Yahweh,26 Mosè si allontanò dal faraone e pregò il Signore.
and Yahweh did as Moses asked; the horseflies left Pharaoh, his officials and his subjects; not oneremained.27 Il Signore agì secondo la parola di Mosè e allontanò i mosconi dal faraone, dai suoi ministri e dal suo popolo: non ne restò neppure uno.
But Pharaoh became obstinate this time too and did not let the people go.28 Ma il faraone si ostinò anche questa volta e non lasciò partire il popolo.
