NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Judith said, 'Listen to me, brothers. Take this head and hang it on your battlements.1 Giuditta rispose loro: "Ascoltatemi bene, fratelli: prendete questa testa e appendetela sugli spalti delle vostre mura.
When morning comes and the sun is up, let every man take his arms and every able-bodied man leavethe town. Appoint a leader for them, as if you meant to march down to the plain against the Assyrian advancedpost.
The Assyrians wil gather up their equipment, make for their camp and wake up their commanders; theyin turn will rush to the tent of Holofernes and not be able to find him. They will then be seized with panic and fleeat your advance.3 Quelli prenderanno le loro armi e correranno entro il loro accampamento a svegliare i capi dell'esercito assiro. Poi si raduneranno insieme davanti alla tenda di Oloferne, ma non lo troveranno e così si lasceranno prendere dal terrore e fuggiranno davanti a voi.
Al you and the others who live in the territory of Israel wil have to do is to give chase and slaughterthem as they retreat.4 Allora inseguiteli voi e quanti abitano l'intero territorio d'Israele e abbatteteli nella loro fuga.
'But before you do this, cal me Achior the Ammonite, for him to see and identify the man who held theHouse of Israel in contempt, the man who sent him to us as someone already doomed to die.'5 Ma, prima di far questo, chiamatemi Achior l'Ammonita, perché venga a vedere e riconoscere colui che ha disprezzato la casa d'Israele e che l'ha inviato qui tra noi come per votarlo alla morte".
So they had Achior brought from Uzziah's house. No sooner had he arrived and seen the head ofHolofernes held by a member of the people's assembly than he fel on his face in a faint.6 Chiamarono subito Achior dalla casa di Ozia ed egli appena giunse e vide la testa di Oloferne in mano ad un uomo in mezzo al popolo radunato, cadde a terra e rimase senza fiato.
They lifted him up. He then threw himself at Judith's feet and, prostrate before her, exclaimed: May yoube blessed in al the tents of Judah and in every nation; those who hear your name wil be seized with dread!7 Quando l'ebbero sollevato, si gettò ai piedi di Giuditta pieno di riverenza per la sua persona e disse: "Benedetta sei tu in tutto l'accampamento di Giuda e in mezzo a tutti i popoli: quanti udranno il tuo nome si sentiranno scossi.
'Now tel me everything that you have done in these past few days.' And surrounded by the people,Judith told him everything she had done from the day she left Bethulia to the moment when she was speaking.8 Ma ora raccontami quanto hai fatto in questi giorni". Giuditta gli narrò in mezzo al popolo quanto aveva compiuto dal giorno in cui era partita fino al momento in cui parlava.
When she came to the end, the people cheered at the top of their voices until the town echoed.9 Quando finì di parlare, il popolo scoppiò in alte grida di giubilo e riempì la città di voci festose.
Achior, recognising al that the God of Israel had done, believed ardently in him and, acceptingcircumcision, was permanently incorporated into the House of Israel.10 Allora Achior, vedendo quanto aveva fatto il Dio di Israele, credette fermamente in Dio, si fece circoncidere e fu aggregato definitivamente alla casa d'Israele.
At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the ramparts. Every man took his arms and they alwent out in groups to the slopes of the mountain.11 Quando spuntò il mattino, appesero la testa di Oloferne alle mura; poi ogni uomo prese le sue armi e scesero lungo i sentieri del monte divisi in manipoli.
Seeing this, the Assyrians sent word to their leaders, who in turn reported to the generals, thecaptains of thousands and al the other officers;12 Appena li videro, gli Assiri mandarono in cerca dei loro capi e questi corsero dagli strateghi, dai chiliarchi e da tutti i loro ufficiali.
and these in their turn reported to the tent of Holofernes. 'Rouse our master,' they said to his major-domo, 'these slaves have dared to march down on us to attack -- and to be wiped out to a man!'13 Poi si radunarono davanti alla tenda di Oloferne e dissero al suo attendente: "Sveglia il nostro signore, perché quegli schiavi hanno osato scendere per darci battaglia, a loro estrema rovina".
Bagoas went inside and struck the curtain dividing the tent, thinking that Holofernes was sleeping withJudith.14 Bagoa entrò e bussò alle cortine della tenda, poiché pensava che egli dormisse con Giuditta.
But as no one seemed to hear, he drew the curtain and went into the bedroom, to find him throwndown dead on the threshold, with his head cut off.15 Ma siccome nessuno rispondeva, aprì ed entrò nella parte più interna della tenda e lo trovò cadavere, steso a terra vicino all'ingresso, con la testa tagliata via dal tronco.
He gave a great shout, wept, sobbed, shrieked and rent his clothes.16 Allora diede in alte grida di dolore e di lamento, urlando con tutte le forze e stracciandosi le vesti.
He then went into the tent which Judith had occupied and could not find her either. Then, rushing outto the men, he shouted,17 Poi si precipitò nella tenda dove era alloggiata Giuditta e non ve la trovò. Allora corse fuori davanti al popolo e gridò:
'The slaves have rebel ed! A single Hebrew woman has brought shame on the House ofNebuchadnezzar. Holofernes is lying dead on the ground, without his head!'18 "Gli schiavi ci hanno traditi! Una sola donna ebrea ha gettato la vergogna sulla casa del re Nabucodònosor! Oloferne eccolo a terra e la testa non è più sul suo busto".
When they heard this, the leaders of the Assyrian army tore their tunics in consternation, and thecamp rang with their wild cries and their shouting.19 I comandanti dell'esercito assiro, appena udirono questo annunzio, si stracciarono i mantelli e rimasero terribilmente sconvolti nel loro animo; risuonarono entro l'accampamento altissime le loro grida e gli urli di dolore.
