Josiah was eight years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for thirty-one years inJerusalem.1 Quando Giosia divenne re, aveva otto anni; regnò trentun anni in Gerusalemme.
He did what is pleasing to Yahweh, and fol owed the example of his ancestor David, not deviatingfrom it to right or to left.2 Egli fece ciò che è retto agli occhi del Signore e seguì le strade di Davide suo antenato, senza fuorviare in nulla.
In the eighth year of his reign, when he was still a youth, he began to seek the God of his ancestorDavid. In the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the sacred poles and thesculpted and cast images.3 Nell'anno ottavo del suo regno, era ancora un ragazzo, cominciò a ricercare il Dio di Davide suo padre.
He superintended the smashing of the altars of Baal, he broke up the incense altars standing abovethem, he shattered the sacred poles and the sculpted and cast images and reduced them to powder, scatteringthe powder on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.4 Sotto i suoi occhi furono demoliti gli altari di Baal; infranse gli altari per l'incenso, che vi erano sopra; distrusse i pali sacri e gli idoli scolpiti o fusi, riducendoli in polvere che sparse sui sepolcri di coloro che avevano sacrificato a tali cose.
He burned the bones of their priests on their altars and so purified Judah and Jerusalem.5 Le ossa dei sacerdoti le bruciò sui loro altari; così purificò Giuda e Gerusalemme.
In the towns of Manasseh, Ephraim and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and round their open spaces,6 Lo stesso fece nella città di Manàsse, di Efraim e di Simeone fino a Nèftali, nei loro villaggi devastati.
he smashed the altars and sacred poles, reduced the sculpted images to powder and broke up al theincense altars throughout the territory of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.7 Demolì gli altari; fece a pezzi i pali sacri e gli idoli in modo da ridurli in polvere; demolì tutti gli altari per l'incenso in tutto il paese di Israele; poi fece ritorno a Gerusalemme.
In the eighteenth year of his reign, after purging the country and the Temple, he commissionedShaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah governor of the city and the herald Joah son of Joahaz, to repair the Templeof Yahweh his God.8 Nell'anno decimottavo del suo regno, dopo aver purificato il paese e il tempio, affidò a Safàn figlio di Asalia, a Maaseia governatore della città, e a Ioach figlio di Ioacaz, archivista, il restauro del tempio del Signore suo Dio.
When they came to the high priest Hilkiah, they handed over the money contributed to the Temple ofGod and col ected by the levitical guardians of the threshold from Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the rest of Israel, from al Judah and Benjamin, and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem.9 Costoro si presentarono al sommo sacerdote Chelkia e gli consegnarono il denaro depositato nel tempio; l'avevano raccolto i leviti custodi della soglia da Manàsse, da Èfraim e da tutto il resto di Israele, da tutto Giuda, da Beniamino e dagli abitanti di Gerusalemme.
They handed it over to the masters of works attached to the Temple of Yahweh, and these gave it tothe men working on the Temple of Yahweh to repair and restore the Temple;10 Lo misero in mano ai direttori dei lavori che sovraintendevano al tempio ed essi l'utilizzarono per gli operai che lavoravano nel tempio per restaurarlo e rafforzarlo.
they gave it to the craftsmen and builders for buying dressed stone and timber for beams, tounderpin the buildings which the kings of Judah had al owed to fall into decay.11 Lo diedero ai falegnami e ai muratori per l'acquisto di pietre da taglio e di legname per l'armatura e la travatura dei locali lasciati rovinare dai re di Giuda.
The men were conscientious in doing their work; their foremen were Jahath and Obadiah, Levitesdescended from Merari, and Zechariah and Meshul am, descended from Kohath, who supervised. The Levites --al of whom were skilled instrumentalists-12 Quegli uomini lavoravano con fedeltà; erano stati loro preposti per la direzione Iacat e Abdia, leviti dei figli di Merari, Zaccaria e Mesullàm, Keatiti. Leviti esperti di strumenti musicali
were in charge of the carriers and supervised al the workmen at their various jobs, while some of theLevites acted as secretaries, book-keepers and gatekeepers.13 sorvegliavano i portatori e dirigevano quanti compivano lavori di qualsiasi genere; altri leviti erano scribi, ispettori e portieri.
While bringing out the money contributed to the Temple of Yahweh, the priest Hilkiah found the bookof the Law of Yahweh given through Moses.14 Mentre si prelevava il denaro depositato nel tempio, il sacerdote Chelkia trovò il libro della legge del Signore, data per mezzo di Mosè.
Hilkiah then said to Shaphan the secretary, 'I have found the Book of the Law in the Temple ofYahweh.' And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.15 Chelkia prese la parola e disse allo scriba Safàn: "Ho trovato nel tempio il libro della legge". Chelkia diede il libro a Safàn.
Shaphan took the book to the king, reporting furthermore to him as fol ows, 'Your servants have doneeverything entrusted to them.16 Safàn portò il libro dal re; egli inoltre riferì al re: "Quanto è stato ordinato, i tuoi servitori lo eseguiscono.
They have melted down the silver which was in the Temple of Yahweh and have handed it over tothe supervisors and the masters of works.'17 Hanno versato il denaro trovato nel tempio e l'hanno consegnato ai sorveglianti e ai direttori dei lavori".
Shaphan the secretary also informed the king, 'The priest Hilkiah has given me a book'; andShaphan read extracts from it in the king's presence.18 Poi lo scriba Safàn annunziò al re: "Il sacerdote Chelkia mi ha dato un libro".
On hearing the words of the Law, the king tore his clothes.19 Udite le parole della legge, il re si strappò le vesti
Then the king gave the fol owing order to Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah,Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king's minister,20 e comandò a Chelkia, ad Achikam figlio di Safàn, ad Abdon figlio di Mica, allo scriba Safàn e ad Asaia ministro del re:
'Go and consult Yahweh on behalf of me and of those left in Israel and Judah about the words of thebook that has been discovered: for Yahweh's furious wrath has been pouring down on us because our ancestorsdid not obey the word of Yahweh by doing what this book says they ought to have done.'21 "Andate, consultate il Signore per me e per quanti sono rimasti in Israele e in Giuda riguardo alle parole di questo libro ora trovato; grande infatti è la collera del Signore, che si è accesa contro di noi, poiché i nostri padri non hanno ascoltato le parole del Signore facendo quanto sta scritto in questo libro".
Hilkiah and those whom the king had designated went to the prophetess Huldah wife of Shallum, sonof Tokhath, son of Hasrah, the keeper of the wardrobe; she lived in Jerusalem in the new town. They spoke toher about this,22 Chelkia insieme con coloro che il re aveva designati si recò dalla profetessa Culda moglie di Sallùm, figlio di Tokat, figlio di Casra, il guardarobiere; essa abitava nel secondo quartiere di Gerusalemme. Le parlarono in tal senso
and she replied, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "To the man who sent you to me reply:23 ed essa rispose loro: "Dice il Signore Dio di Israele: Riferite all'uomo che vi ha inviati da me:
Yahweh says this: I am going to bring disaster on this place and the people who live in it -- all thecurses set down in the book read in the king of Judah's presence.24 Dice il Signore: Ecco, io farò piombare una sciagura su questo luogo e sui suoi abitanti, tutte le maledizioni scritte nel libro letto davanti al re di Giuda,
Because they have abandoned me and burnt incense to other gods, so as to provoke my anger bytheir every action, my wrath is about to be poured down on this place, and nothing can stop it.25 perché hanno abbandonato me e hanno bruciato incenso ad altri dèi provocandomi a sdegno con tutte le opere delle loro mani.
As for the king of Judah who sent you to consult Yahweh, say this to him: Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: The words you have heard . .
But since your heart has been touched and you have humbled yourself before God on hearing whathe has decreed against this place and the people who live in it, have torn your clothes and wept before me, I toohave heard"-Yahweh says this.27 poiché il tuo cuore si è intenerito e ti sei umiliato davanti a Dio, udendo le mie parole contro questo luogo e contro i suoi abitanti; poiché ti sei umiliato davanti a me, ti sei strappate le vesti e hai pianto davanti a me, anch'io ho ascoltato. Oracolo del Signore!
"Look, when I gather you to your ancestors, you wil be gathered into your grave in peace; you wilnot live to see the great disaster that I am going to bring on this place and on the people who live in it." ' Theytook this answer to the king.28 Ecco, io ti riunirò con i tuoi padri e sarai deposto nel tuo sepolcro in pace.

The king then had al the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem summoned,29 Allora il re inviò dei messi e radunò tutti gli anziani di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.
and the king went up to the temple of Yahweh, with al the men of Judah and al the inhabitants ofJerusalem, priests, Levites and al the people, high and low.
The king then, standing on the dais, bound himself by the covenant before Yahweh, to followYahweh, to keep his commandments, decrees and laws with al his heart and soul and to carry out the terms ofthe covenant as written in this book.31 Il re, stando in piedi presso la colonna, concluse un'alleanza davanti al Signore, impegnandosi a seguire il Signore, a osservarne i comandi, le leggi e i decreti con tutto il cuore e con tutta l'anima, eseguendo le parole dell'alleanza scritte in quel libro.
He made al those present in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge their al egiance to it. The citizens ofJerusalem took action in keeping with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors,32 Fece impegnare quanti si trovavano in Gerusalemme e in Beniamino.
while Josiah removed al the abominations throughout the territories belonging to the Israelites andrequired all inhabitants of Israel to serve Yahweh their God; throughout his lifetime they did not deviate fromfol owing Yahweh, God of their ancestors.33 Giosia rimosse tutti gli abomini da tutti i territori appartenenti agli Israeliti; costrinse quanti si trovavano in Israele a servire il Signore loro Dio.
