NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
When his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him, he made himself stronger against Israel1 Al suo posto divenne re suo figlio Giòsafat, che si fortificò contro Israele.
by stationing troops in al the fortified towns in Judah and by garrisoning Judah and the towns ofEphraim which his father Asa had captured.2 Egli mise guarnigioni militari in tutte le fortezze di Giuda; nominò governatori per le città di Giuda e per le città di Èfraim occupate dal padre Asa.
Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat because he fol owed the example of his father's earlier days and didnot have recourse to Baal,3 Il Signore fu con Giòsafat, perché egli seguì la primitiva condotta di suo padre e non ricercò i Baal,
but sought Yahweh, the God of his father, fol owing his commandments and not behaving as Israeldid.4 ma piuttosto ricercò il Dio di suo padre e ne seguì i comandi, senza imitare Israele.
Because of this, Yahweh put him in secure control of the kingdom, while al Judah gave Jehoshaphatpresents until ample riches and honour were his.5 Il Signore consolidò il regno nelle mani di Giòsafat e tutto Giuda gli portava offerte. Egli ebbe ricchezze e gloria in quantità.
He was so enthusiastic about obeying Yahweh that once again he abolished the high places andsacred poles in Judah.6 Il suo cuore divenne forte nel seguire il Signore; eliminò anche le alture e i pali sacri da Giuda.
In the third year of his reign he sent his leading men-Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel andMicaiah, to give instruction in the towns of Judah.7 Nell'anno terzo del suo regno mandò i suoi ufficiali Ben-Cail, Abdia, Zaccaria, Netaneèl e Michea a insegnare nelle città di Giuda.
With them went the Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan,Adonijah and Tobijah, the Levites; Elishama and Jehoram the priests went with them.8 Con essi c'erano i leviti Semaia, Natania, Zebadia, Asael, Semiraimot, Giònata, Adonia e Tobia e i sacerdoti Elisama e Ioram.
They gave instruction in Judah, having with them the book of the Law of Yahweh, and went round althe towns of Judah instructing the people.9 Insegnarono in Giuda; avevano con sé il libro della legge del Signore e percorsero tutte le città di Giuda, istruendo il popolo.
A panic from Yahweh seized all the kings of the countries surrounding Judah, as a result of whichthey did not make war on Jehoshaphat.10 Il terrore del Signore si diffuse per tutti i regni che circondavano Giuda e così essi non fecero guerra a Giòsafat.
Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and a load of silver and the Arabs brought himseven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred he-goats.11 Da parte dei Filistei si portavano a Giòsafat tributi e argento in dono; anche gli Arabi gli portavano bestiame minuto: settemilasettecento arieti e settemilasettecento capri.
Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful. He built fortresses and storage towns in Judah.12 Giòsafat cresceva sempre in potenza. Egli costruì in Giuda castelli e città di approvvigionamento.
He accumulated ample supplies in the towns of Judah. He also had warriors, outstanding men, inJerusalem.13 Disponeva di molta manodopera nelle città di Giuda. In Gerusalemme risiedevano i suoi guerrieri, uomini valorosi.
According to family, this is how they were classified: Over the commanders of the thousands ofJudah was General Adnah, who had three hundred thousand outstanding men;14 Ecco il loro censimento secondo i casati: per Giuda, capi di migliaia: Adna il capo, e con lui trecentomila uomini valorosi.
Under him was General Jehohanan, who had two hundred and eighty thousand;15 Alle sue dipendenze c'era il comandante Giovanni e con lui duecentottantamila uomini.
Under him was Amasiah son of Zichri, who had volunteered for Yahweh and who had two hundredthousand outstanding men;16 Alle sue dipendenze c'era Amasia figlio di Zicrì, votato al Signore, e con lui duecentomila uomini valorosi;
That outstanding soldier, Eliada, represented Benjamin, and he had two hundred thousand menarmed with bow and shield;17 per Beniamino, Eliada, uomo valoroso, e con lui duecentomila armati di arco e di scudo.
And under him Jehozabad, who had one hundred and eighty thousand equipped for war.18 Alle sue dipendenze c'era Iozabad e con lui centottantamila uomini in assetto di guerra.
These were in attendance on the king, apart from those whom the king had stationed in the fortifiedtowns al over Judah.19 Tutti costoro erano al servizio del re, oltre quelli che il re aveva stabiliti nelle fortezze in tutto Giuda.
