NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
When Rehoboam had consolidated the kingdom and become strong, he, and al Israel with him, abandoned the Law of Yahweh;1 Quando il regno fu consolidato ed egli si sentì forte, Roboamo abbandonò la legge del Signore e tutto Israele lo seguì.
and thus it happened that in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt marched onJerusalem, because they had been unfaithful to Yahweh,2 Nell'anno quinto del re Roboamo, Sisach re d'Egitto marciò contro Gerusalemme, perché i suoi abitanti si erano ribellati al Signore.
with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand cavalry and countless hordes of Libyans, Sukkiimand Cushites who came from Egypt with him.3 Egli aveva milleduecento carri, sessantamila cavalli.
They captured the fortified towns of Judah and reached Jerusalem.4 Egli prese le fortezze di Giuda e giunse fino a Gerusalemme.
The prophet Shemaiah then came to Rehoboam and the generals of Judah, who had fal en back onJerusalem before Shishak's advance, and said to them, 'Yahweh says this, "You have abandoned me and so Ihave abandoned you into Shishak's clutches." '5 Il profeta Semaia si presentò a Roboamo e agli ufficiali di Giuda, che si erano raccolti in Gerusalemme per paura di Sisach, e disse loro: "Dice il Signore: Voi mi avete abbandonato, perciò anch'io vi ho abbandonati nelle mani di Sisach".
At this, the Israelite generals and the king humbled themselves and said, 'Yahweh is just!'6 Allora i capi di Israele e il re si umiliarono e dissero: "Giusto è il Signore!".
When Yahweh saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah asfol ows, 'They have humbled themselves. I shal not destroy them but shall grant them some degree ofdeliverance. My retribution wil not be poured out on Jerusalem by means of Shishak;7 Poiché si erano umiliati, il Signore parlò a Semaia: "Si sono umiliati e io non li distruggerò. Anzi concederò loro la liberazione fra poco; la mia ira non si rovescerà su Gerusalemme per mezzo di Sisach.
they are nonetheless to become his slaves, so that they may learn the difference between serving meand serving kings of other countries.'8 Tuttavia essi saranno a lui sottomessi; così conosceranno la differenza fra la sottomissione a me e quella ai regni delle nazioni".
So Shishak king of Egypt advanced on Jerusalem and carried off the treasures of the Temple and thetreasures of the royal palace. He took everything away, including the golden shields which Solomon had made.9 Sisach, re d'Egitto, venne a Gerusalemme e prese i tesori del tempio e i tesori della reggia, li vuotò.
To replace these, King Rehoboam made bronze shields, entrusting them to the commanders of theguard who guarded the king's palace gate.10 Il re Roboamo li sostituì con scudi di bronzo, che affidò agli ufficiali delle guardie addette alla reggia.
Whenever the king went to the Temple of Yahweh, the guards would come out carrying them, returning them to the guardroom afterwards.11 Ogni volta che il re andava nel tempio, le guardie li prendevano, quindi li riportavano nella sala delle guardie.
Because King Rehoboam had humbled himself, the retribution of Yahweh turned away from him soas not to destroy him completely; and there were also some good features in Judah.12 Perché Roboamo si era umiliato, lo sdegno del Signore si ritirò da lui e non lo distrusse del tutto. Anzi in Giuda ci furono avvenimenti felici.
Thus he was able to strengthen his position in Jerusalem and continue as king; for Rehoboam wasforty-one years old when he came to the throne and remained king for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the citychosen by Yahweh from al the tribes of Israel to put his name there. His mother's name was Naamah theAmmonite.13 Il re Roboamo si consolidò in Gerusalemme e regnò.
But he did wrong in not setting his heart on seeking Yahweh.14 Egli fece il male, perché non aveva applicato il cuore alla ricerca del Signore.
The history of Rehoboam, from first to last, is this not all written down in the records of Shemaiah theprophet and of Iddo the seer? Warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam went on throughout the period.15 Le gesta di Roboamo, le prime e le ultime, sono descritte negli atti del profeta Semaia e del veggente Iddo, secondo le genealogie. Ci furono guerre continue fra Roboamo e Geroboamo.
When Rehoboam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Abijahsucceeded him.16 Roboamo si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto nella città di Davide.
