NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Yahweh appeared to him at the Oak of Mamre while he was sitting by the entrance of the tent duringthe hottest part of the day.1 Poi il Signore apparve a lui alle Querce di Mamre, mentre egli sedeva all'ingresso della tenda nell'ora più calda del giorno.
He looked up, and there he saw three men standing near him. As soon as he saw them he ran fromthe entrance of the tent to greet them, and bowed to the ground.2 Egli alzò gli occhi e vide che tre uomini stavano in piedi presso di lui.
'My lord,' he said, 'if I find favour with you, please do not pass your servant by.3 dicendo: "Mio signore, se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, non passar oltre senza fermarti dal tuo servo.
Let me have a little water brought, and you can wash your feet and have a rest under the tree.4 Si vada a prendere un po' di acqua, lavatevi i piedi e accomodatevi sotto l'albero.
Let me fetch a little bread and you can refresh yourselves before going further, now that you havecome in your servant's direction.' They replied, 'Do as you say.'5 Permettete che vada a prendere un boccone di pane e rinfrancatevi il cuore; dopo, potrete proseguire, perché è ben per questo che voi siete passati dal vostro servo". Quelli dissero: "Fa' pure come hai detto".
Abraham hurried to the tent and said to Sarah, 'Quick, knead three measures of best flour and makeloaves.'6 Allora Abramo andò in fretta nella tenda, da Sara, e disse: "Presto, tre staia di fior di farina, impastala e fanne focacce".
Then, running to the herd, Abraham took a fine and tender calf and gave it to the servant, who hurriedto prepare it.7 All'armento corse lui stesso, Abramo, prese un vitello tenero e buono e lo diede al servo, che si affrettò a prepararlo.
Then taking curds, milk and the calf which had been prepared, he laid al before them, and they atewhile he remained standing near them under the tree.8 Prese latte acido e latte fresco insieme con il vitello, che aveva preparato, e li porse a loro. Così, mentr'egli stava in piedi presso di loro sotto l'albero, quelli mangiarono.
'Where is your wife Sarah?' they asked him. 'She is in the tent,' he replied.9 Poi gli dissero: "Dov'è Sara, tua moglie?". Rispose: "È là nella tenda".
Then his guest said, 'I shal come back to you next year, and then your wife Sarah will have a son.'Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent behind him.10 Il Signore riprese: "Tornerò da te fra un anno a questa data e allora Sara, tua moglie, avrà un figlio".
Now Abraham and Sarah were old, wel on in years, and Sarah had ceased to have her monthlyperiods.11 Abramo e Sara erano vecchi, avanti negli anni; era cessato a Sara ciò che avviene regolarmente alle donne.
So Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, 'Now that I am past the age of childbearing, and my husbandis an old man, is pleasure to come my way again?'12 Allora Sara rise dentro di sé e disse: "Avvizzita come sono dovrei provare il piacere, mentre il mio signore è vecchio!".
But Yahweh asked Abraham, 'Why did Sarah laugh and say, "Am I real y going to have a child nowthat I am old?"13 Ma il Signore disse ad Abramo: "Perché Sara ha riso dicendo: Potrò davvero partorire, mentre sono vecchia?
Nothing is impossible for Yahweh. I shal come back to you at the same time next year and Sarahwil have a son.'14 C'è forse qualche cosa impossibile per il Signore?
Sarah said, 'I did not laugh,' lying because she was afraid. But he replied, 'Oh yes, you did laugh.'15 Allora Sara negò: "Non ho riso!", perché aveva paura; ma quegli disse: "Sì, hai proprio riso".
From there the men set out and arrived within sight of Sodom, with Abraham accompanying them tospeed them on their way.16 Quegli uomini si alzarono e andarono a contemplare Sòdoma dall'alto, mentre Abramo li accompagnava per congedarli.
Now Yahweh had wondered, 'Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do,17 Il Signore diceva: "Devo io tener nascosto ad Abramo quello che sto per fare,
as Abraham wil become a great and powerful nation and al nations on earth wil bless themselvesby him?18 mentre Abramo dovrà diventare una nazione grande e potente e in lui si diranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra?
For I have singled him out to command his sons and his family after him to keep the way of Yahwehby doing what is upright and just, so that Yahweh can carry out for Abraham what he has promised him.'19 Infatti io l'ho scelto, perché egli obblighi i suoi figli e la sua famiglia dopo di lui ad osservare la via del Signore e ad agire con giustizia e diritto, perché il Signore realizzi per Abramo quanto gli ha promesso".
Then Yahweh said, 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin is so grave,20 Disse allora il Signore: "Il grido contro Sòdoma e Gomorra è troppo grande e il loro peccato è molto grave.
that I shal go down and see whether or not their actions are at all as the outcry reaching me wouldsuggest. Then I shal know.'21 Voglio scendere a vedere se proprio hanno fatto tutto il male di cui è giunto il grido fino a me; lo voglio sapere!".
While the men left there and went to Sodom, Yahweh remained in Abraham's presence.22 Quegli uomini partirono di lì e andarono verso Sòdoma, mentre Abramo stava ancora davanti al Signore.
Abraham stepped forward and said, 'Wil you really destroy the upright with the guilty?23 Allora Abramo gli si avvicinò e gli disse: "Davvero sterminerai il giusto con l'empio?
Suppose there are fifty upright people in the city. Wil you really destroy it? Wil you not spare theplace for the sake of the fifty upright in it?24 Forse vi sono cinquanta giusti nella città: davvero li vuoi sopprimere?
Do not think of doing such a thing: to put the upright to death with the guilty, so that upright and guiltyfare alike!
Yahweh replied, 'If I find fifty upright people in the city of Sodom, I wil spare the whole placebecause of them.'26 Rispose il Signore: "Se a Sòdoma troverò cinquanta giusti nell'ambito della città, per riguardo a loro perdonerò a tutta la città".
Abraham spoke up and said, 'It is presumptuous of me to speak to the Lord, I who am dust andashes:27 Abramo riprese e disse: "Vedi come ardisco parlare al mio Signore, io che sono polvere e cenere...
Suppose the fifty upright were five short? Would you destroy the whole city because of five?' 'No,' hereplied, 'I shal not destroy it if I find forty-five there.'28 Forse ai cinquanta giusti ne mancheranno cinque; per questi cinque distruggerai tutta la città?". Rispose: "Non la distruggerò, se ve ne trovo quarantacinque".
Abraham persisted and said, 'Suppose there are forty to be found there?' 'I shal not do it,' he replied,'for the sake of the forty.'29 Abramo riprese ancora a parlargli e disse: "Forse là se ne troveranno quaranta".
Abraham said, 'I hope the Lord wil not be angry if I go on: Suppose there are only thirty to be foundthere?' 'I shall not do it,' he replied, 'if I find thirty there.'30 Riprese: "Non si adiri il mio Signore, se parlo ancora: forse là se ne troveranno trenta".
He said, 'It is presumptuous of me to speak to the Lord: Suppose there are only twenty there?' 'I shallnot destroy it,' he replied, 'for the sake of the twenty.'31 Riprese: "Vedi come ardisco parlare al mio Signore! Forse là se ne troveranno venti". Rispose: "Non la distruggerò per riguardo a quei venti".
He said, 'I trust my Lord wil not be angry if I speak once more: perhaps there wil only be ten.' 'I shalnot destroy it,' he replied, 'for the sake of the ten.'32 Riprese: "Non si adiri il mio Signore, se parlo ancora una volta sola; forse là se ne troveranno dieci".
