NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
But Jacob settled in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.1 Giacobbe si stabilì nel paese dove suo padre era stato forestiero, nel paese di Canaan.
This is the story of Joseph. Joseph was seventeen years old. As he was young, he was shepherdingthe flock with his brothers, with the sons of his father's wives, Bilhah and Zilpah; and Joseph brought his fatherbad reports about them.2 Questa è la storia della discendenza di Giacobbe.
Jacob loved Joseph more than al his other sons, for he was the son of his old age, and he had adecorated tunic made for him.3 Israele amava Giuseppe più di tutti i suoi figli, perché era il figlio avuto in vecchiaia, e gli aveva fatto una tunica dalle lunghe maniche.
But his brothers, seeing how much more his father loved him than all his other sons, came to hate himso much that they could not say a civil word to him.4 I suoi fratelli, vedendo che il loro padre amava lui più di tutti i suoi figli, lo odiavano e non potevano parlargli amichevolmente.
Now Joseph had a dream, and he repeated it to his brothers, who then hated him more than ever.5 Ora Giuseppe fece un sogno e lo raccontò ai fratelli, che lo odiarono ancor di più.
'Listen', he said, 'to the dream I had.6 Disse dunque loro: "Ascoltate questo sogno che ho fatto.
We were binding sheaves in the field, when my sheaf suddenly rose and stood upright, and then yoursheaves gathered round and bowed to my sheaf.'7 Noi stavamo legando covoni in mezzo alla campagna, quand'ecco il mio covone si alzò e restò diritto e i vostri covoni vennero intorno e si prostrarono davanti al mio".
'So you want to be king over us,' his brothers retorted, 'you want to lord it over us?' And they hatedhim even more, on account of his dreams and of what he said.8 Gli dissero i suoi fratelli: "Vorrai forse regnare su di noi o ci vorrai dominare?".
He had another dream which he recounted to his brothers. 'Look, I have had another dream,' he said.'There were the sun, the moon and eleven stars, bowing down to me.'9 Egli fece ancora un altro sogno e lo narrò al padre e ai fratelli e disse: "Ho fatto ancora un sogno, sentite: il sole, la luna e undici stelle si prostravano davanti a me".
He told his father and brothers, and his father scolded him. 'A fine dream to have!' he said to him.'Are all of us then, myself, your mother and your brothers, to come and bow to the ground before you?'10 Lo narrò dunque al padre e ai fratelli e il padre lo rimproverò e gli disse: "Che sogno è questo che hai fatto! Dovremo forse venire io e tua madre e i tuoi fratelli a prostrarci fino a terra davanti a te?".
His brothers held it against him, but his father pondered the matter.11 I suoi fratelli perciò erano invidiosi di lui, ma suo padre tenne in mente la cosa.
His brothers went to pasture their father's flock at Shechem.12 I suoi fratelli andarono a pascolare il gregge del loro padre a Sichem.
Then Israel said to Joseph, 'Your brothers are with the flock at Shechem, aren't they? Come, I amgoing to send you to them.' 'I am ready,' he replied.13 Israele disse a Giuseppe: "Sai che i tuoi fratelli sono al pascolo a Sichem? Vieni, ti voglio mandare da loro". Gli rispose: "Eccomi!".
He said to him, 'Go and see how your brothers and the flock are doing, and bring me word.' He senthim from the val ey of Hebron, and Joseph arrived at Shechem.14 Gli disse: "Va' a vedere come stanno i tuoi fratelli e come sta il bestiame, poi torna a riferirmi".
A man found him wandering in the countryside and asked him, 'What are you looking for ? '15 Mentr'egli andava errando per la campagna, lo trovò un uomo, che gli domandò: "Che cerchi?".
'I am looking for my brothers,' he replied. 'Please tel me where they are pasturing their flock.'16 Rispose: "Cerco i miei fratelli. Indicami dove si trovano a pascolare".
The man answered, 'They have moved on from here; indeed I heard them say, "Let us go toDothan." ' So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.17 Quell'uomo disse: "Hanno tolto le tende di qui, infatti li ho sentiti dire: Andiamo a Dotan". Allora Giuseppe andò in cerca dei suoi fratelli e li trovò a Dotan.
They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they made a plot to kil him.18 Essi lo videro da lontano e, prima che giungesse vicino a loro, complottarono di farlo morire.
'Here comes that dreamer,' they said to one another.19 Si dissero l'un l'altro: "Ecco, il sognatore arriva!
'Come on, let us kil him now and throw him down one of the storage-wells; we can say that somewild animal has devoured him. Then we shal see what becomes of his dreams.'20 Orsù, uccidiamolo e gettiamolo in qualche cisterna!
But Reuben heard, and he saved him from their clutches. 'We must not take his life,' he said.21 Ma Ruben sentì e volle salvarlo dalle loro mani, dicendo: "Non togliamogli la vita".
'Shed no blood,' said Reuben to them, 'throw him down that wel out in the desert, but do not kil himyourselves' -- intending to save him from them and to restore him to his father.22 Poi disse loro: "Non versate il sangue, gettatelo in questa cisterna che è nel deserto, ma non colpitelo con la vostra mano"; egli intendeva salvarlo dalle loro mani e ricondurlo a suo padre.
So, when Joseph reached his brothers, they pul ed off his tunic, the decorated tunic which he waswearing,23 Quando Giuseppe fu arrivato presso i suoi fratelli, essi lo spogliarono della sua tunica, quella tunica dalle lunghe maniche ch'egli indossava,
and catching hold of him, threw him into the wel . The wel was empty, with no water in it.24 poi lo afferrarono e lo gettarono nella cisterna: era una cisterna vuota, senz'acqua.
They then sat down to eat. Looking up, they saw a group of Ishmaelites who were coming fromGilead, their camels laden with gum tragacanth, balsam and resin, which they were taking to Egypt.25 Poi sedettero per prendere cibo.
Then Judah said to his brothers, 'What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood?26 Allora Giuda disse ai fratelli: "Che guadagno c'è ad uccidere il nostro fratello e a nasconderne il sangue?
Come, let us sel him to the Ishmaelites, then we shal not have laid hands on him ourselves. Afteral , he is our brother, and our own flesh.'
Now some Midianite merchants were passing, and they pul ed Joseph out of the wel . They soldJoseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver, and these men took Joseph to Egypt.28 Passarono alcuni mercanti madianiti; essi tirarono su ed estrassero Giuseppe dalla cisterna e per venti sicli d'argento vendettero Giuseppe agli Ismaeliti. Così Giuseppe fu condotto in Egitto.
When Reuben went back to the wel , there was no sign of Joseph.
he went back to his brothers. 'The boy has gone,' he said. 'What am I going to do?'30 tornò dai suoi fratelli e disse: "Il ragazzo non c'è più, dove andrò io?".
They took Joseph's tunic and, slaughtering a goat, dipped the tunic in the blood.31 Presero allora la tunica di Giuseppe, scannarono un capro e intinsero la tunica nel sangue.
Then they sent off the decorated tunic and had it taken to their father, with the message, 'This iswhat we have found. Do you recognise it as your son's tunic or not?'32 Poi mandarono al padre la tunica dalle lunghe maniche e gliela fecero pervenire con queste parole: "L'abbiamo trovata; riscontra se è o no la tunica di tuo figlio".
He recognised it and cried, 'My son's tunic! A wild animal has devoured him! Joseph has been torn topieces!'33 Egli la riconobbe e disse: "È la tunica di mio figlio! Una bestia feroce l'ha divorato. Giuseppe è stato sbranato".
Tearing his clothes and putting sackcloth round his waist, Jacob mourned his son for many days.34 Giacobbe si stracciò le vesti, si pose un cilicio attorno ai fianchi e fece lutto sul figlio per molti giorni.
Al his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. 'No,' he said, 'I wilgo down to Sheol in mourning and join my son.' Thus his father wept for him.35 Tutti i suoi figli e le sue figlie vennero a consolarlo, ma egli non volle essere consolato dicendo: "No, io voglio scendere in lutto dal figlio mio nella tomba". E il padre suo lo pianse.
Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard.36 Intanto i Madianiti lo vendettero in Egitto a Potifar, consigliere del faraone e comandante delle guardie.
